Childminder's Christmas bonus - how much?

Hello,

Is there a going rate for the Christmas bonus? Is a week's wages enough on top of usual pay enough? Or is that a bit mingy?Don't want to seem mean as I love my CM to bits, but money is also a bit tight.

Last year I gave mixture of cash, space nk vouchers and some champs. This year think just money is better (most people want that over than little gifts) but not sure if a week's pay is enough.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Do all childminders get a Christmas bonus? Am I meant to give ours one?

thegrowlygus · 16/11/2007 15:28

Oh crap. Was I meant to do this last year? I think I gave her a bottle of champagne but I can't really remember.

madamenoir · 16/11/2007 15:29

it never occurred to me to give a week's wages as an Xmas bonus (over £100...eekk)
I just gave a bottle of wine last year but this year will be much more organised and generous with nice smellies from somewhere posh.

IdrisTheDragon · 16/11/2007 15:30

We gave presents to their children but can't remember if we did anything else .

Definitely it was nothing like a week's pay.

IdrisTheDragon · 16/11/2007 15:32

(but our week's pay is £200)

rookiemum · 16/11/2007 15:35

I have ordered a figurine thing that was recommended on another thread, and plan to give her £50.00 of M&S vouchers. I'd feel odd giving my CM money as a bonus, not sure why, so I feel that vouchers is a nice way of doing it.

Sazisi · 16/11/2007 15:36

I usually get a week's wages on top, which I'm always thrilled with
I only cm part-time

thegrowlygus · 16/11/2007 15:36

Oh yes - got her kids presents too. But then she gave my DS some choccy something or other.

BoysAreLikeReindeer · 16/11/2007 15:38

I would so like to be your Cm, yogamama.

I'm sure your Cm would not be expecting a Xmas bonus, a little gift would be lovely though.

Last year my parents gave me a bottle of wine and some smellies.

yogamama · 16/11/2007 15:40

Well she looks after my DD and DS and is really flexible, kids love her, we're all happy with the arrangement and she's generally fab.

Would be £300/£350 (was £200 when she just had DD)but she once worked as a nanny and used to get £1000 - no way can stretch to that!

I thought I would ask if she prefered gifts and cash and just cash and she said cash. She's not money grabbing by the way (she doesn't know how much she's getting yet!)

Oh and we're not rolling in it either - been saving up for this all year! Just wanted to know if was standard practise.

You are really planning on giving your childminder a £300 bonus? I have bought my childminder a nice necklace (I have noticed she likes to wear costume jewellry) and will add a bottle of wine and a card made by DS to that. I don't get a Christmas bonus.

PandaG · 16/11/2007 15:54

I CM'd part time for 7 years, never had a Christmas bonus, had some nice presents but nevr cash. I do think it is a lovely idea though, and am pleased you like your CM enough to want to treat her in thois way

claricebeansmum · 16/11/2007 15:58

I don't have a CM but have always given Christmas bonus to cleaners, builders etc Also always pay holidays, when ill etc

My motto is do as you would be done to. If you can't afford a whole weeks wages then give a smaller amount.

yogamama · 16/11/2007 16:49

She is great and I'm happy to spread a little Chrimbo cheer her way, as she really means a lot to us, but yes might reduce it slightly. Oh and we get her son a pressie too. tots up costs and hides!

i think you are exceedingly generous!

hana · 16/11/2007 17:24

have never given a xmas bonus to a childminder - a present yet, from the children and a bottle of wine, that's it!

claricebeansmum · 16/11/2007 17:28

I give a "tip" to the postie, the milkman and the dustman too

yogamama · 16/11/2007 17:28

To be honest I don't think our cm expects it - it was just something I did last year as nice gesture to say 'thanks' for all your hard work.

I never even thought about getting a present or as bonus from my childminded parents!

I think a weeks wages is very generous (especially given it is so much!).

If you ever need another childminder, come by my way

LOONEYplayingachristmasTUNEy · 16/11/2007 17:40

NO.....I'LL be your childminder!!! Seriously, I never expect anything. I've had fake flowers and vase, vouchers, notebook, chocs etc and bottle of something or sometimes just something for ds but never money and tbh, don't expect anything. I get all mindees a present but don't expect back.
