Childminder cost after school

Just wondering what you pay or charge for a school pick up and sfterschool care.

I've been quoted £20 per day for pick up and 3 hours care. Snack and drink provided. I have to provide meal.

I'm pretty sure there will be no documents/learning journey, no activities and tv will be on with DS allowed to free play, relax, watch tv (which is fine s he'll be in reception and tired).

It's more than a local gap club with activities and resources so I was a bit surprised.

It's not an easy decision as she is lovely, and I'm sure DS would feel like it's home from home.
The food would be a hassle, but not impossible. Confused

Does the CM expect you to send a meal or does she expect your little one to have dinner at home with you after you pick up?

whirlygirly · 10/06/2016 19:29

£75 per day? ShockShock faints

KayJBee · 10/06/2016 19:36

Ours is £5 an hour, including snack. I collect at 4.30 so not sure if a hot meal is extra for those that stay later.

SaintEyning · 10/06/2016 19:37

£20 for school pick up, includes dinner. £40 a whole day inc 3 meals if I need. South east. Just TV time, trip to park, bit of Xbox if CM son and husband home. DS has been going since he was 1, so it's routine for him.

Toomanywheeliebinsagain · 10/06/2016 22:08

I paid £30 for three hours school pick up until 6.15pm. Good childminder who did a range of activities and gave them a substantial afternoon tea (hot meal at school). It was expensive but worth it

Xmasbaby11 · 10/06/2016 22:14

It's £4 an hour here - north. I'm paying £12 for pick up 3-6pm. £6 for morning.

SarahAnderson · 10/06/2016 22:21

I pay £73 per day. Just worked it out. My childminder is amazing though, hugely experienced, and she picks up in the morning from our house and drops back home again. Lovely meals included, and I live in a pricey part of London. Nursery around here is actually more expensive than that.

Hello,
I need some advice. I have just been contacted by my childminder who informed me via email that my fees as from the 1st Sept will change from £6/Hr to £20/Hr . She also advise that it was a decision that was taken by all the childminders of the area.
Questions:
1- Do the childminder are allowed to form a "cartel" and fix the prices in a specific area?
2- Is an increase of 233.33% legal? I have 2 children and the cost of the childcare as mentioned in her email just skyrocketed. My cost per week has now changed from £72 to £210.

can someone advise if this type of increase is legal?

PotteringAlong · 01/08/2017 18:14

Of course it's legal. They're offering a service. If you don't like it, go elsewhere.

2014newme · 01/08/2017 18:16

After school club is £9 per child, till 6pm
Is there an after school club option?

2014newme · 01/08/2017 18:18

@twinsmumuk
It's legal but it's crazy!

£20 per hour?!?!?
Nurseries charge £60 for a whole day!
Investigate other options

alltouchedout · 01/08/2017 18:20

£5 a day for me but she'd normally charge double that- the discount is because ds3 is with her full time. After school club would be £8 a day. I'm in Manchester.

milkysmum · 01/08/2017 18:24

I use the school out of hours care. Breakfast club is £3.50, after school club is £7 until 5.45pm

gamerwidow · 01/08/2017 18:52

That seems expensive Dd cm charges £5/ hour and it includes a dinner.
Also CM is strictly no tv so it's play, story time, craft, cake decorating etc, after school not being dumped in front of a telly for 3 hours. They usually get a trip to the park on sunny days too!
We are zone 6 London/Kent borders

OrphanAccount · 01/08/2017 18:54

£20 per hour? Bloody hell. Here in the midlands my lovely CM charges £4 an hour.

HSMMaCM · 01/08/2017 19:05

Is it £20/hour or £20 for an after school session? I would charge £15 whether it was 5 minutes or 3 hours.

CMs near me discuss our pricing structures, but we're all different and have different things to offer.

TWINSMUMUK · 01/08/2017 19:57

@mimishimmi
I confirm that the price is £20 per hour as per email received.
The children have a meal but no structured activities after school. Mostly play time or TV. I have been with her 5 years which is why the jump in cost made me enquire.

TWINSMUMUK · 01/08/2017 19:59

Thank you all for your comments.
Much appreciated

bbcessex · 01/08/2017 21:53

TWINSMUMUK

£20 per hour (assume for one child) is ridiculous.

I would not believe her stating 'all childminders' have done the same thing.

Sounds like your childminder has gone a bit bonkers.. or wants you to give notice.

I would shop around.. and I would also talk to the child care department at the local authority and forward a copy of her email.. I don't know what jurisdiction they would have but think they would be rather unimpressed with childminders holding parents to ransom like this..

OrphanAccount · 01/08/2017 21:58

I would do exactly what bbc suggests.

£20 per hour for a CM is ludicrous. That's what you'd expect to pay a nanny. I would find someone else.

TWINSMUMUK · 02/08/2017 04:20

Thank you

elfinpre · 02/08/2017 04:35

I think it would be fine if they provided a meal- I'd be looking for somewhere that provided at least a snack, depending on timing of pick up. Wouldn't want to be making a packed lunch AND dinner for them to take to school!

elfinpre · 02/08/2017 04:40

Do the childminder are allowed to form a "cartel" and fix the prices in a specific area?

It probably is a cartel, some childminders do group together and charge the same. I'd be livid and incredulous at that price rise. If you find other childminders are doing the same which leaves you no choice of provider then please do report them to the council/Ofsted/NCMA and leave reviews wherever they advertise.

nannynick · 02/08/2017 06:23

They can do what they like but as others have said, at £20 per hour you could get a nanny, even taking in account of employers NI, pension, payroll admin, mileage and they would care for as many children as there are in your family, not cost per child.

Is there anything which might be making it costly such as only wanting 30 minutes after school?
