Freaking out about au pair arrival

This is such a first world problem, sorry...but I've got a new au pair (my first au pair) arriving in three weeks and I'm all of a sudden stricken about it! What if it's a total nightmare! I've just started doing some work from home - writing - and will occasionally go into a work for a few days here and there. But I will mostly be at home with her. I've got a four-year-old and a 19-month-old. And I wanted an au pair because I was getting exhausted by only being able to write at night or during naps - as well as obviously doing child care and all the housework etc. And I chose an au pair because of the babysitting and the help with housework etc (as opp to a nanny a couple of mornings a week). And also because my DH works long hours and I thought it might be nice to have someone else in the house. But now I'm scared!! Anyone else felt like that? And have some tips for when she first arrives??

Thank you Monkey - that's a nice way to look at it! Hopefully things will, as usual, seem a bit better in the morning! xx

Hi Nanny, we are all better, thank you - talk about a rocky start! We are absolutely loving her.

She's just the loveliest girl - no static coming off her if you know what i mean i.e. she never seems cross or moody - well not yet!

I feel like she's added so much to the family already. We've learnt new recipes (we both love cooking), new words and phrases. And I really enjoy just having another adult around for company - as Gus said. And I think that heaping on the kindness with her is reaping rewards.

Surprisingly I haven't found it awkward asking her to do stuff - as I thought I would. She's quite soft with the children - i.e. my 4yo runs rings around her a bit, but I'd rather it was that way then they opposite. It's fantastic. We're sending her back to Spain for a week next week so she can go to a wedding - and I'm dreading it. I've got so used to having an extra pair of hands and just a lovely companion around!
