How much would expect to be paid for this?

Met a lovely family last week with 3 young children (eldest 3). They have offered me some babysitting work (I am a nanny). This will be very occasional, perhaps the odd evening here and there, however there will be the odd time they would want me overnight, so from about 7:30 (kids already in bed) until maybe 8am the next day.

How much would you expect for those hours? Bearing in mind the kids would be asleep (and are likely to sleep through). I want to get some opinions as I am not sure whether what she is offering is quit low. Thanks.

£25 sounds like a complete joke to me! I charge more than that for a short evening of babysitting where I watch TV and get to go back to my own bed. The absolute minimum I would consider would be £70, but to really want to go back and do it regularly it would have to be a bit more that.

In London, I babysat many years ago for 10/hour plus tips, plus taxis home. No childcare qualifications.

I would expect a minimum of 70/night.

Pelican seems to be very confused what chilscarers do. If you want someone to do cleaning and ironing then hire a cleaner!

pelican....

I hope you don't get the 15 year olds to iron...

I would stay 'go jump' if u expected me to iron and 'work' till 10pm....Shock Shock Shock

shushpenfold · 09/12/2014 17:56

£25 is about what I would expect to pay for an evening out, returning before midnight. They're having a laugh!

FishWithABicycle · 09/12/2014 18:59

A nanny is a childcare professional and should be paid as such. It may be fair enough to pay a 15yo less but that doesn't mean there are any circumstances under which it's ok to pay a nanny that low.

Thanks again guys. I am constantly looking for extra work as I only work part time and money can be quite tight. I keep telling myself that anything is better than nothing but when £25 was mentioned I did think it wasn't high enough. I will just tell her my rates and if she doesn't want to pay it then I guess I just won't do it. thanks for opinions

Xmas I think you will find that 15 year olds are on the basic sit around on watching TV hourly pay rate and not the more expensive working nanny hourly rate.

Pelicangiraffe · 09/12/2014 20:47

Fish that's an interesting argument BUT a Teacher working as a TA will only get a TA salary.

Karoleann · 09/12/2014 20:48

We paid our london nanny £8/hour babysitting (so after children went to bed) until 11pm. Then £50 for the night - the usual nanny rate from when they woke up. So from 7.30am til 8am the next day (assuming the children woke at 7am) that would be £90 for the babysit.

Maybe they will come home though, just very late and you wouldn't have to get up during the night or proxy parent?

Callaird · 09/12/2014 21:41

I'm with the others! I am paid very well but I do very long hours. I don't need to babysit and would prefer not to so if someone asks me to then I want it to be worth my while, especially this time of year, going out in the cold and dark, sitting in a strangers house and I have babysat in some very strange houses!

Even when I look after ex-charges over night (which I would do for free!) I get paid very well. £10 per hour on a Friday/Saturday night (£8 during the week but not sure why) until 11pm then £30 overnight and £15 per hour daytime Saturday and Sunday.

I never sleep well if I do an overnight, even for my 17 year old ex-charges!

Who else would do a 50-65 hour week and then do overtime for less than their hourly wage?

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/12/2014 22:10

I'm tired. Blondes brain is not here :)

Im working nights tho very well paid and every hour and yes I'm sitting on my bum watching tv and def not ironing !!!!

pelican does your nanny really iron while bs or will she happily earn less and not iron??

fish says it all - nannies are professionals and should be treated and laid as such

By all means pay less for a younger lady but let's hope of an emergancy situation happens she could cope .......

ZenNudist · 09/12/2014 22:25

£50-60 fair. I pay babysitter £6/h. I don't expect a discount because she's just watching tv whilst my kids sleep. I'm paying her because I trust her. We also offer food and drink (which she refuses) and give lifts home (30-40mins driving usually).

I can understand getting a lower rate for regular overnight work as it might be worth your while if it was also easy for you. But £25-30 a complete piss take.

FishWithABicycle · 10/12/2014 00:40

Not an equivalent situation. When an inexperienced 15yo is there being paid £5ph their one instruction is (or should be) "if anything happens, phone me, I can be back in 15 minutes". You don't expect them to be able to deal with whatever may come be it night terrors, vomit etc. An experienced nanny can't just switch off the experienced part of their brain and become clueless in the event of an emergency, so it is impossible for them to do the job only to 15yo level.

It's the other side of the "you get what you pay for" coin. You can't pay Easyjet prices for a first class British Airways flight just because that's the price you'd prefer to pay. If you want the cheap price don't ask for the top-level option.

lovelynannytobe · 10/12/2014 23:17

I pay my babysitter £3/h. Once she babysat for 6 hours and I told her to paint my living room while we were out to get my monies worth as she'd be sitting and watching TV instead and I just can't have that. I want sweat running down her back every time she babysits for me. .... only joking ...
My sitter gets well above NMW and a tip on top plus whatever it is she fancies out of fridge/freezer.
I really don't get people paying pittance to somebody who's going to be looking after their most precious treasures. I would want that person to feel valued and I'd like them to want to come back.
There is a babysitting agency in London (easily googlable) that offers babysitting service plus free up to 1.5 hours of ironing during the evening. I think this is mad!
