I have recently found a nanny I'm keen to higher and am in the prices of doing my due diligence. As I'm totally new to all of this and therefore super nervous about it all I wondered if I'm allowed to ask her for:

  1. A CRB/DBS check on her partner? Although he's not going to be employed by us I do wonder if I need to be extra safe as he might be around to pick her up etc therefore have access to my children, possibly without me having ever met him?
  1. Can I ask (with her permission of course) to speak with her GP to see if there are any medical issues I need to be aware of? I know I'll need her permission but is this a tad ott?

I don't want to freak her out and put her off from accepting, but I feel I do need to be extra thorough as she'll have sole access over my kids in private behind closed doors. I also know that if I'm this para then maybe I should consider other options but having spent weeks researching and thinking about it 24/7 this is really our best option. She seems perfect, and my instincts are positive but I feel I need to be sure and thorough.

Any other things I need to be aware of/do?

Thanks for your help!

No you cannot do a check in someone waiting outside in a car. Are you always this paranoid?

Ofsted get letters from GPs all the time before they register CMs. I don't know the exact wording, but Ofsted are obviously looking for some sort of reassurance that the person is fit for childcare.

I had a live in post where the mum wouldn't allow me to have any visitors of mine in the house until they had been CRB checked. My best friend had been CRB checked about 3 years before but my boss said it wasn't recent enough. I thought that if she didn't trust my judgement in the company I keep, then why on earth did she trust me to look after her children. She never allowed play dates either unless she had vetted the nanny/mum and child first. I left very quickly.

LittleBairn I have never been asked to get a GP's letter declaring me fit for work a real invasion of privacy! an Ofsted registered nanny until recently would have an up-to-date CRB but I don't think they are in charge of the new DBS checks? References should give a good indication of time taken off sick.

Listening to a discussion on the radio about people taking sickies I said to my employer at the time "you'll know if I take time off I am really sick" she replied "if you phone in sick I'll send an ambulance round" Grinex employers will usually tell you if the nanny takes a lot of time off sick!

I know I should feel sorry for you (and to some extent, I am, leaving a child to someone else is hard), but gosh, I do feel for the nanny. I think you should almost ask her those things so she will know what she gets herself into...

You sound like a control freak...

Maybe try a nursery?
