Do you have dinner at your nanny job or do you go home to eat?

Just wondering as it was never stipulated in the contract.

Nanny has been with us for a while and is absolutely wonderful and is live-out. Lunch is stipulated in the contract but have told nanny she's free to 'help herself' if hungry at other times.

Dinner was never 'included' and the kids eat at 5pm anyway, but it has sort of crept up that she eats with the kids, and now expects to have dinner although she finishes at 6.30pm.

It adds majorly to the household weekly shopping as I find myself having to buy extra to make sure there's enough for my DH and me at dinner time later.

If you're a nanny, do you have dinner at work and not cook at home?

Before anyone has a go, I don't mind her having something to eat, but do mind that it is expected. Also I don't think it's unreasonable to expect nanny to go home to have dinner if finishing at 6.30pm.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
(Previous nanny had always gone home to have dinner, so am asking as wondering if I'm fussing over nothing)

Thanks in advance.

I eat breakfast and sometimes lunch with kids but on whole I take the basics with me ie eggs slice of bread with me.
She. It's just me and the baby I may eat out and share with him so I'm sure they wouldn't me me having snacks at there's.

I don't have any experience of a nanny, but in a 'normal' job, working 8-6 isn't unusual. Without any meals provided....You then have to get yourself home and get your own tea. I'm often not home til 7 or there abouts and then have to start cooking. This is normal.
The nanny gets breakfast, snacks and lunch included (which seems appropriate/generous on the breakfast front) so has opportunity to teach the children table manners then. And nothing to stop her sitting with them at their tea time to help/guide. I would feel the piss is being taken somewhat. And it does cost, especially if adult portions are being eaten. Fine if it's contracted or even asked about, or occasional, esp if a long day is being worked (more than a standard 10h) but from an outsiders point of view it seems a little unreasonable of the nanny to do it routinely without discussion.

maybe this is a good opportunitiy for your Nanny to model good table manners to and with your children.
