Nanny Novice - help

Help please. We are looking at employing a nanny for our 3 year old who is starting pre school. We need a nanny for the hour pre school and 2.5hrs after school, The school is approx 15-30 mins travel time using public transport from home - do we have to pay the nanny for the half hour travel time each way after dropping daughter and to go pick up daughter (I.e. do we have to pay 1.5hrs in the morning and 3hrs in the afternoon)?

Also a question about paid holiday. If she is working for just 3.5-4.5 hours a day monday to friday most of the year (I.e. term time) but working a full 10.5hrs a day during school holidays - how many hours per day do you pay them by law for their paid holiday?

Appreciate any help.

You'll have to pay the nanny for the time on transport because she will be with the child. Just pay her hourly so you don't have to worry about paid holiday.

Hi there

We've moved this to our Childminders/Nannies/Au Pairs topic for you now.

Calculate holiday entitlement in hours rather than days. If they take holiday in term-time then a day off is the number of hours they would have worked.

Minimum holiday entitlement is 12.07% of hours worked.

Will you be limiting when holiday can be taken, such as not during termtime?

Their place of work is your home so travel cost and time from your home to the school and back you need to cover. Nanny may drive and use their own car, you would then pay mileage plus time.

It is not many hours during term time so it may be hard to find someone it suits. May suit a local person who has their own child.

A nanny payroll company can help you with this sort of thing and draw up contract of employment along with doing the monthly payslips and PAYE returns.

Give www.payefornannies.co.uk a try, my boss has been using them for 5 years without any problems.

Yes, you pay for travel to/from the school and for the nannies time doing that travelling.

If they lived nextdoor to the school perhaps you could come to some arrangement but they are more likely to live near you I would have thought, so will be doing the trip to/from school purely for taking/collecting your child.

Is it an all day pre-school? What happens if it's shut, such as a snow day, or if your child is mildly ill, would you cover that or expect nanny to?

Not sure the job is that appealing, wonder how fun it would be taking a 3 year old on a 30 min bus trip during peak travel time (assuming pre-school starts at 9am). Not sure I would consider it.
