Hi Mums

I am a working mum in France, and DH has just been offered a position in London. We have 1 daughter and we will launch baby number two this spring (hopefully it will get to earth end of 2006). I have all sorts of questions, and specifically should I try to find a job in the UK or stay at home with my children?... and the cost of childcare is one major issue in the UK for working mums...

Can you help me to have an idea of how much it would cost me ? just let me know what childcare type you chose (nursery, childminder, nanny), for how many children, in which town and how much it costs you in a month all included.

thanks a lot for your help :)

mamanflo, back in the UK with a smile :)

i live in surrey sutton - my childmindeer charges £8.00 per hour for both of mine (1 ten and 1 two yr old)
DS2 just stopped going to nursery and that cost £190.22 a month for 1 day a week, (about 44.00 a day for an under 2 /967.00 per month for a fulltime place. )

NannyL · 23/03/2006 21:30

i know I cost my bosses about £25k per year... (which includes my salary tax NI, and their employers contributions)

That does not include the food we eat (including me (who eats the same as the kids)) the electric / oil / gas (like heating etc which would be off if we wernt in) and all of our day trips out and clubs we go to etc.

Oh and my mileage typically adds £40 - £50 per week on top of my salary

tiredemma · 23/03/2006 21:30

im in birmingham,

ds1 goes to afterschool club 4x a week - this is #72.00 pcm.

ds2 goes to FT nursery 5 days a week- this is #498.00 pcm

PrincessPeaHead · 23/03/2006 21:31

nanny, live out, 4.5 days a week, 4 children, £315 pw nett

badgerhead · 24/03/2006 06:36

As a childminder in West Sussex I charge £3.60 per hour full time (over 30 hours per week) & £4 per hour part time (under 30 hours per week), & I know several others charge £4 per hour flat rate or more, up to £4.50 per hour. This in my Town, elsewhere in the county is cheaper, down on the coast.

arfissimo · 24/03/2006 06:42

Hi Mamanflo.

In London my live-in nanny cost me £250 nett per week plus food/board/sick pay etc.

I would give her around £50-£100 per week for food & expenses out with DD.

I also put DD into nursery for one day per week for socialisation and that cost £250 per month.

I was in Kingston, near Uwila.

threebob · 24/03/2006 06:55

I'm glad I live in NZ. Full time private nursery would be $170 including all meals. That's under 70 quid a week. Ds goes a day and a half which costs $61.

arfissimo · 24/03/2006 07:42

In Oz I pay $540 per week for 3 days with my nanny (plus expenses) and $210 per week for 2 days at nursery, so $750 per week in total.

DD's nursery has the dubious honour of being the most expensive in Australia! There is such a long waiting list (2 years) everywhere else that it was the only place I could get her into as a new arrival in the country.

Should change my name to 'skint'.

threebob · 24/03/2006 09:31

I hope everything is gold plated at that nursery!

acnebride · 24/03/2006 09:38

nanny-share in oxford - £4 per hour, we pay £400 per month which includes food. That's for ds to be looked after with one other child.

PiccadillyCircus · 24/03/2006 10:55

Nursery in Herts

Under 3s £46.35 a day or £195.70 for a week (so £850ish per month for full time). You get everything for this and can be there from 8am until 6pm.

Not sure what it is for over 3s but will find out when DS is 3.

DD will get a 15% sibling discount when she starts and they will hopefully be going 3 days aweek so that will be £1,113 a month. There will be some money left over from my salary Smile.

xmandax · 24/03/2006 17:36

I am a childminder in Norfolk and charge £3.00 for first child £2.50 for second I think u should move to Norfolk n commute lol or maybe not! Good Luck anyways

Hulababy · 24/03/2006 17:47

We are in Yorkshire and DD goes to private nursery 2.5 days a week. We pay £28.50 a day (it just went up £2 a day from this month). I think the under 2s pay £30 a day, This includes freshly cooked meal a lunch time plus snack at about 3 o'clock. This is for 8am till 5:30pm.

Now DD is over 3 we get a reduction in that cost because of the child care vouchers.

harrogatemum · 24/03/2006 17:49

I have two in nursery (DTs) for only 3 days a week and it costs me £753 per month.

Imagine if I were to put them in full time, it doesnt bear thinking about.

Elf1981 · 24/03/2006 17:54

Move to the Midlands and commute!
I pay a very good childminder £90 per week for a 5 day 7:30-4:30 placement. I supply nappies, wipes and milk as its EBM, but when she is weaned the CM will supply all food. Plus I get 6 weeks where I dont have to pay (3 weeks hols for her, 3 weeks for me)

Initally we'd looked at nurseries. One was £120 per week but all food, nappies and wipes were supplied. Another was £150 we'd have to supply nappies etc but they did have their own onsite cook!

nzshar · 24/03/2006 18:36

Elf1981 £2ph lucky you!!

Im a childminder in Herts. £4ph flexible hours all food except evening dinner included, though nappies, formula and if jars are given are to be provided.

Good luck :)

sunandmoon · 24/03/2006 19:33

West London - Under two cost £47 per day. DD goes 4 days a week so £940 a month (incl. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) and a wonderful care!!! And we still pay if going on holiday and Bank holidays...

sunandmoon · 24/03/2006 19:38

But work can organise voucher... still waiting for my work to organise it.. and it should be a saving of (hopefully) £200 per month!!!! Does anybody no more about them????

rarrie · 24/03/2006 20:19

Live in Wiltshire.

My DD only goes to Nursery three mornings a week, so I only pay £225 approx.

I think it works out at £150 a full time week, £30 a day and £15 a half session (8 - 1 or 1 - 6). But the price is going up soon to £17 half session and £33 day. With the option of extra hours at £4.50 an hour and a short day (9 -3) at reduced rates.

Its not the cheapest by far from round here, but it is a good nursery and all the workers have a minimum of a level 3 qualification - so I guess that costs them a bit!

cjmummy · 24/03/2006 20:33

I live in Potters Bar, and we pay £845 per month for full time nursery care. They are open from 7.30am until 6.30pm and the cost includes all food, drinks, nappies etc. It seems expensive to us but we are really happy with the care our ds receives.

alibubbles · 25/03/2006 13:02

cjmummy, do you use Headstart nursery?

cjmummy · 25/03/2006 20:06

yes alibubbles ... the Headstart in Potters Bar

rookiemater · 08/08/2008 13:09

I'm in Edinburgh and pay £4.00 an hour for a fabulous childminder and £10.00 a month for his food. Although I think she will be putting up her prices in September.

Prior to the credit crunch I would have said come to Scotland instead, loads of big companies here, lots of things to do and childcare way cheaper, but its not quite as good for jobs now.

Cherbear, your post is quite specific, you might get more responses if you started your own thread
