Desperate for a Filipina Housekeeper/Nanny

DiziDee · 10/06/2011 11:28

Truly desperate. Our housekeeper/nanny fell ill 5 weeks ago and has been in hospital. We are having our house renovated and my DD is only 6. I work as does my husband. Does anyone know where, how, when I can get one from or if you can recommend anyone?

You can't specify a particular nationaliy.

You can specify a nationality if you have good reason however Filipinas are quite difficult to find legally. In a rush your best option is a temporary nanny of whatever nationality until your current nanny/housekeeper has recovered.

Nice try reality but I don't think those reasons would fly Grin although I quite fancy an Italian gardener...

RitaMorgan · 10/06/2011 12:13

Lets not judge, maybe the OP has a genuine reason like her DD is learning Tagalog?

I'm sure it wouldn't be for some slightly unpleasant, borderline racist reason like Filipinas are just so hardworking and lovely with children because they miss their own kids so much...

Strix · 10/06/2011 13:33

This is a wind up.

Especially the bit about the sick one in the hospital... presumably they are going to leave her there and remove cash wages?

wrinklyraisin · 10/06/2011 14:45

OMG. Recently overheard in NYC playground, two Yummy Mommies talking:
"My Filipina asked me for a raise his weekend."
"She did? Why? Aren't you guys already paying her $500 a month?!"
"Apparently thats not enough for 6 days a week. Can you believe that? She gets her own room and food, and wants more money!"
"They're just gtting greedy now."

I sat there my chin on the floor. Some people's attitudes astound me. And for the hour I sat under that tree while my charge napped in the stroller, these two moms paid zero attention to their two toddler boys causing havoc in the splash pool area, including smacking the other kids. I really wanted to say something.

Oopsie · 12/06/2011 16:11

Surely the reason anybody hires a Filipina, is because they know they can get away with paying them peanuts and treating them like dirt, yet still they will stay because they have mouths to feed back home and no other decent prospects. Not rocket science really.

DiziDee · 13/06/2011 09:43

This is all getting really fractious and nasty!

I asked for a Filipina as I am half Filipina myself, so yes, tagalog will come in handy. And yes, Strix, my housekeeper/nanny was seriously ill (mini stroke followed by a brain haemorrhage, but I didn't think that it was necessary to allude to that). I am obviously under the wrong impression that this site would help mums. I never expected it to be contentious or downright horrid. Our existing lady is part of the family, earns a 4 figure salary monthly, gets a free flight home every 2 years PLUS a discretionary bonus which invariably is four figure too, we pay for her annual work permit renewal through our lawyers using the UKBA fast track system which is not cheap. That's only part of her package! Also, for my DD who is only 6 years old and saw her nanny of 3 years have the stroke, I felt it in her best interest to have some continuity and balance.

Guys/Gals, no rascism or pun intended, but your emails are unhelpful and nasty! You have generalised on the basis of - I can only assume - your own treatment to housekeeper, nannies and au pairs who give up their family lives and invariably children to come all the way here to work and earn an income.

I hope people are nicer and more understanding to you when you have problems and post them on this site!

Has it not occurred to you that the wording of your OP was perhaps not ideal? You might have included that you are looking for a philipina for a bit of cultural continuity, shince you are Filipina.

StillSquiffy · 13/06/2011 16:43

Dizi, you have already posted on a thread which directly recommended kalayaan.org as the place to go. this is the only agency I am aware of.

DiziDee · 13/06/2011 16:52

Thanks StillSquiffy. I have been in contact with kalayaan.org and we are working on some applicants. Thank you.

Strix, don't blame me for YOUR misguided views. You and Reality must be friends. This thread ends here.

maybe the OP has power & dominance issues?

oh dear disobeyed the "This thread ends here" order

wouldn't make a good slave servant would I Grin

Strix · 13/06/2011 17:24

Dizi, I think you will find that many of the people here are very helpful to many other people here; and your comments, not mine, are out of line.

Surely you are aware that people do commonly seek out Filipinas because they think they will work lots and cost little. So, of course, people thought that was your intention too. Language like "where, how, when I can get one from " does sound like you are looking for a trophy and not a human being.

So you were jumped on. The irony is that everyone who jumped on you was actually intending to defend Filipinas, not criticise one.

Oopsie · 13/06/2011 19:05

Very well said Strix.

hangon · 13/06/2011 22:13

Well I am english and I would not be allowed to ask for an english nanny.

How dare you decide that you can end the thread, just because people do not agree with you.

StillSquiffy · 14/06/2011 10:46

Hangon - if you have justifyable cultural reasons for asking for a certain nationality, then under UK law you can (lots of exceptions to normal legislation apply to people working in the family home).

Not that that makes the original wording read any better, of course and Strix was right to point that out so eloquently.

baguettecut · 14/06/2011 10:53

'This thread ends here'

Good luck with that.

hangon · 14/06/2011 20:07

Yes but what reasons does she have? Very interesting so I can advertise for an english nanny then? What sort of reasons would be justifyable? I complained to gumtree when they advertised for an indian nanny and thney took it off.

MrsCampbellBlack · 14/06/2011 20:09

Oh I am so going to use 'this thread ends here' as many times as I can Smile

hangon · 14/06/2011 20:18

The thread cannot end I would like some answers.

sassyminder · 14/06/2011 21:24

DiziDee I agree with you in many points
