so am i in labour??

im 40+2, first baby...

Im having conttractions 4 mins apart- have been on a stupid monitor at the hospital for an hour- and then the horrific internal showed that my cervix is still too posterior for it to be 'labour'

The trace did pick up the contractions, and I passed a massive bloody show this morning.( sorry) I ended up in hospital seen as I had a trickle of water this morning too- andtold the midwife at my routine appt today. who sent me straight to the hospital.

I am really feeling these pains quite badly and it has been 4 hours of them being regular- now getting closer together... the MW at the hospital basically said 'come back in when your waters break properly' and take some paracetamol....she even said see your community midwife again....what?? (confused)

Im now sitting in bed on MN, watching 24- and moaning like a banshee every 4 mins. hot waterbottle and paracetamol. Damn do I want a Gin and tonic (blush)
what should I do? at what point do i do anything?

I don't knnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooow.

PlumBumMum · 02/06/2010 20:07

get in a nice warm bath,
eat some banana on toast or whatever for energy and try and rest, sounds like your on your way

good luck

rubyslippers · 02/06/2010 20:07

Sounds Iike it

Do the contractions stop if you change position? If not then they are the real thing

If you are in pain then ring labour ward back especially as CX 4 mins apart

How long are the cx lasting?

dct · 02/06/2010 20:08

can you talk during the pain?

belgo · 02/06/2010 20:09

agree with dct, can you talk during the pains?

(swearing doesn't count as talking btw)

SanctimoniousTeetotalPrig · 02/06/2010 20:09

Sounds like the latent bit and in some cases can go on for days (sorry).

Take the paracetamol, have a bath, ask your community midwife to come and see you in the morning if nothing's changed so they can have a look at what's happening.

rubyslippers · 02/06/2010 20:09

My waters broke 3 mins before DD was born
They never broke with DS until the MW did it

I am not sure if that is therefore a good sign

Littleblue · 02/06/2010 20:09

All i can say is if your worried..go say so?..a trickle could mean the waters have ruptured high up...a bath might help get things moving...try to be as calm as you can...best wishes with it all, you will be a mum soon

RobynLou · 02/06/2010 20:11

sounds like you're on your way, try and keep moving, the more upright you are the more pressure the baby's head exerts on your cervix and the quicker labour will come.

Good luck!

thegauntlet · 02/06/2010 20:12

thanks for the g and t!
no, i cant talk during them, i just have to moan/humm very high pitched- and moving does not help at all...

does bath help along? i thought it might stop me in my tracks....

OP posts:
belgo · 02/06/2010 20:14

If it's not real labour yet then a bath would stop it. If it is real labour, then a bath should help it along.

I would say have a bath and then go to bed; but then I'm not there with you so can't say anything for certain!

dct · 02/06/2010 20:14

if you cant talk then I would go in tbh

rubyslippers · 02/06/2010 20:15

I think you are in labour

How long are the cx lasting?

I got in a bath a early on and just couldn't get comfy.

You can try but i would be heading for the hospital before you get too uncomfortable

thegauntlet · 02/06/2010 20:18

i just dont want to get turned away again... and the husband is out until about 930. the cx are 40seconds ish...
do you think i should call the hosp? what time is shift turn over usually- i dont want to talk to the same mw again!

rubyslippers · 02/06/2010 20:20

It sounds Ike you are labour
Call them

I had a 40 min car journey with 4 min CX it was not fun

dct · 02/06/2010 20:23

I was told during my first pg to go in when I couldn't talk anymore. Ive done that both times and both have been born within a few hours of getting there.

Littleblue · 02/06/2010 20:29

It sounds like your in labour..if your 'humming' with the contractions...call them again and see what they say..

undercovamutha · 02/06/2010 20:34

Phone the hospital. Don't worry about looking silly! I felt silly when in labour with DC2 as got sent home and told that I was only 2cm. Because I didn't want to bother the m/w again I nearly ended up giving birth in the car!

Shaz10 · 02/06/2010 20:35

I've never had a contraction but if they're fairly regular call the hospital when the next one's due so they can hear you humming through it.

thegauntlet · 02/06/2010 20:38

ok, im gonna call; will let you know...

OP posts:
RobynLou · 02/06/2010 20:39

def sounds like you're in labour to me...hope it goes well!

MumNWLondon · 02/06/2010 20:43

If I'd left it until my waters broke I'd have had DC3 at home, but this less likely with first birth.

I agree with the other posters about talking through them - or even during them at all. Bath good idea - will help you relax and might stop it if not real... why not get in bath until your DH comes home?

40 seconds not that long though, maybe wait until they are a bit longer?? Def call midwife again for advice though..

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/06/2010 21:12

I was told to go in/call when cx lasting 1 minute and 5 minutes apart. I think lasting 40 secs and 4 mins apart (you are timing from start of one to start of another yes?) is close enough.

Telling you to go in when your waters break is bloody bonkers, since they only break at the start of labour for about 10% of women. Mine were broken by the mw when I was 9-10cm with dd!

belgo · 02/06/2010 21:38

Anything happening?

MumInBeds · 02/06/2010 21:49

I guess as you've not been back then it's 'go'!
