Did your DH/DP cut the cord?

May I ask why? Just curious to know.

DH has no desire to cut the cord when we have our DC1 in a few weeks time. I don't care either way. But it does seem to be a popular thing to do. Is it just to give the DP something to do?

Yes he did. MW asked if he wanted to & offered him some scissors. Think he was taken rather by surprise (poor man was rather shell shocked and knackered by the whole thing ), took the scissors and cut. Think he was pleased he did it though - sort of symbolic. I didn't much mind either way.

babybouncer · 29/12/2009 17:27

Before, mine had said he didn't want to, but then when the midwife offered, he did. I think it seemed less weird or icky having gone through the labour and more like just the next thing to do.

ijustwanttoaskaquestion · 29/12/2009 17:29

mine didnt, he is extremely squeemish, but actually it wasn't that - he was brilliant, but it was a very difficult birth and we were just relieved it was over - he was too busy crying like a baby!!!

knicknack · 29/12/2009 17:30

ds1 midwife cut the cord but ds2 my best friend cut the cord

Not with dc1 as he was born blue and whisked away.

Dh was asked by mw if he wanted to with dc2 and he did. He every intention of remaining at the top end of the bed but curiosity won out.

ImSoNotTelling · 29/12/2009 17:46

DD1 emcs not offered
DD2 yes offered he declined v squeamish

I'm not fussed either way

detoxdiva · 29/12/2009 17:46

Not with dd - he was asked if he wanted to and said no.

Ds was born at home, and he did cut the cord that time - maybe it was the whole relaxed home birth vibe that made him more comfortable about it?

BucharestYeMerryMNers · 29/12/2009 17:49

He would have died if asked even to look at it.

I didn't see it either actually.

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 29/12/2009 17:52

No he had no desire to cut the cords with any of the births and I even wrote it down on the birth plan so they wouldn't ask him as he didn't want to have to discuss it with the MW or feel he somehow ought to cut it.
I cannot see why it is seen as some sort of "bonding" experience for the father to cut the cord and dh feels the same. Makes no sense to me.

TheFallenMadonna · 29/12/2009 17:52

Not with DS as it was a bit of a rush, but yes with DD, because the midwife gave him the scissors. We didn't put much thought into it really. She said "here you are, you can cut the cord", and so he did.

Arsed · 29/12/2009 17:55

No, they were both premature it wasn't an option.

He doesn't feel he missed out on anything.

e3chick · 29/12/2009 17:55

For our first he did cut the cord, because it seemed the thing to do or because it made him involved or seemed romantic??...I don't remember why.

For our next children he didn't bother as we realised there is so much more to being supportive and a good father than cutting the cord so it was really soooo unimportant in the scheme of things. (To us).

peachygirl · 29/12/2009 17:55

With DD2 (a VBAC) My Dh was asked and he declined.

I think he did well to cope with what he saw without keeling over. I had half expected this but he was great

ln1981 · 29/12/2009 19:29

with dd and ds2 he did. always maintained that he wouldnt-he is very squemish! was quite chuffed with himself in all honesty. but he thinks that my daughters outie belly button is all his fault now (he doesnt like belly b uttons either! )

Cybilshoeboots · 29/12/2009 19:30

I don't see the big deal with cord cutting. But placenta eating? Yes please

winnybella · 29/12/2009 19:31

Yes, was very cool and composed about it.

mowcop · 29/12/2009 19:34

DH did all 3. When I was pregnant with number 3 he asked the midwife if he could deliver the baby, so the cord was nothing! We were going for a home birth, but ended up being induced with SPD.

GhoulsAreLoud · 29/12/2009 19:39

No.

DH didn't want to - I couldn't see the appeal either so brought it up in a "you don't want to cut the cord do you?" kind of a way (knowing he prob wouldn't want to).

M/W asked quite early on in labour if he would want to and he said he wasn't sure so she said they'd see how he felt at the time.

In the event DD was taken straight to be checked over by the paed so don't think he could have if he'd have wanted to.

As they were doing the forceps business the M/W did tell DH that his job was to turn the fan off (was August) as soon as the baby was born so she didn't get cold. Think that was probably just her way of trying to make him feel involved!

blondiep14 · 30/12/2009 12:11

My DP did, asking if I it was OK! Don't think I'd have cared who did but I think it was nice for him to do, well, not nice but you know what I mean!
He was quite chuffed he'd done it and looking back I'm amazed, he's usually a wuss!
