I was reading a book lately where a woman has a homebirth and when she goes into labour at 11pm, her doula tells her to 'have a glass of wine and go back to sleep'.

Is this GOOD advice or BAD advice?!

Just curious really.

With my first child, I had a planned C section at 40 weeks for bona fide but incredibly dull, non urgent medical reasons. Was told they would do my C section early in the morning so was asked to go into hospital the night before - was told I wasn't allowed to eat and drink from midnight but fine before. DH checked me into the hospital at 7pm and then we immediately went out and had dinner at a very nice restaurant close by the hospital - him a reasonable meal, me a starter plate of something that I picked at and then a glass and a half of champagne. With DD, I had te same thing and was asked to be in the hospital for 6.30am so our nanny was staying overnight. We thought why waste a babysitter so went out somewhere near to home and had a light supper and a glass of champagne. My obstetrician positively recommended it!

I was told by the midwife of #4 to have a bottle of wine (presumably shared with DH) when I had irritating (ie painful but irregular and non-dilating) contractions just before my due date. It (or something) did the biz - I had a good night's sleep and went into full-blown labour the next evening.
