I'm 36+5 today and just had a second growth scan which has confirmed baby is likely to be large! Sonographer could see a good layer of fat around her tummy this time Her AC was on the 97th percentile this time and significantly above that this time putting her at about 8 1/2 lbs today Her head circumference has been average both times.

So my romantic festive homebirth plans have all gone out of the window, which i am ok about. I am however now feeling quite anxious about the birth. So i would really appreciate hearing your honest accounts of birthing larger babies. Was labour long/short, pain more/less, tearing, interventions? I'm not looking for all fluffy accounts i'd rather be prepared before i go in that naive and shocked at the actual outcome!

Thanks

It's possible even with larger head circumference. My heavy (over 12lb) baby's head circ was 5cm larger than average. Born in water at home. I was left alone at my request. No tears.

14m old DD was 8lb 13 at birth, even though the scan had(apparently) shown she would be on the small side! The pain was hard to bear but I found it much harder giving birth to my other DD who was 6lb 13 at birth.
No pain relief throughout all 3 of my labours, and I am hoping that baby no.4 will be out as quickly as no.3 was!

DS was 11lb 1oz and it was a natural birth. We had no idea he was going to be a big baby!

Labour was absolutely fine. Birth a bit traumatic as his shoulder got stuck. His breathing was very fast a few hours after the birth so he was taken to the neo-natal. He had a lumbar puncture done and was on antibiotics for a week. I wasn't well as I was really anaemic, so the long stay in hospital was not a bad thing.

His first year saw him losing a lot of weight gradually and he is now 3.5 and a very average healthy boy.

And in comparison... DD (now 8.5) was 8lb 8oz and labour with her was awful. I had every form of pain relief they offered me and she was born with forceps.

dd1 was a 9lb 1oz baby (12 days overdue), had a induction but her head was coming out in a wrong angle thru the birth canal so had an emergency c-section.

dd2 was a 9lb 3.5oz and had a natural birth. Had a 2nd degree tear (muscles inside were tear) cos my dd2 had a big head (she had got a square head!! )

As ive had 2 babies now....nothing will put me off having more if i wanted to

biglips · 26/12/2009 10:39

(dd2 was 9 days overdue)

I had a 9lber and 10lber - bigger baby MUCH easier delivery. Was told heavier babies pushing on the cervix help it dilate more efficiently? Anyway, I'm a firm believer in the head circumference and position mattering more than weight of baby. My first had a big head but was chunky, second was 57cm lng and very slim.

Good luck.

10lbs 12oz, born at home. Did have shoulder dystocia but was resolved by midwife very effectively.

Biggest baby was shortest labour and quickest recovery. My other two were 9lbs 6oz and 9lbs 3oz.

doodleboo · 08/01/2010 21:35

I had a 9lb 6 first time, back to back.

2nd was only 8lbs, and i can honestly say they were equally painful but i didn't have any tears or problems with either.

Good luck and try not to worry!

serialmum · 10/01/2010 21:23

Scans can be wrong - I was told (in labour) that DS was about 10lb 7oz! He was born after long labour (partially caused, i believe, by by anxiety at his size)weighing in at 9lb 5oz.
Go in with an open mind and take each step as it happens.
Good luck!

While we are on this issue...any ideas ladies why some women tend to have big babies?

My first one (DS1) was born at 37 weeks and weighed 9lb8oz. Was a natural birth with 7 hours labour. This is despite me on a religously healthy diet of fruits and veg!!!!

Expecting the second one now and this one is again big for dates. So this one is going to be a whopper as well.

Fed up of telling people that I have a tendency of producing big babies!!!!!

heth1980 · 04/03/2010 10:36

DD1 was 7lb 12oz and DD2 was 9lb 6oz, both born at 37+1. DD2 was by far the easiest birth....3 hour labour and pushed her out in a couple of minutes as opposed to 1.5 hours with DD1. I had a 2nd degree tear with both of them, although it has healed so much quicker 2nd time around.
