What did you all wear to give birth in? I had a section the first time so for me it was a hospital gown! This time I am hopefully going to have water birth.

You'll find that most hospitals have modesty guidlines as to what birthing ladies should wear. The general reccommended attire is long trousers (baggy) and a large button-up blouse.

tostaky · 09/11/2009 10:13

I wore a very comfy Gap PJ bottom + one of those strapy top with in-built bra/support (provides support + easy access for breastfeeding)
Will be wearing the same this time around
Good luck!!

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 09/11/2009 10:16

I only wore my socks

victoria - really? never heard of that before.

blondieminx · 09/11/2009 11:51

I asked the same Q at the hospital day on Saturday - MW said "something you won't care about throwing away afterwards as birth is not a neat and tidy experience".

Am thinking of getting a longish t-shirt type nightdress for the occaision from Matalan or similar...

MrsBadger · 09/11/2009 12:00

modesty guidelines?
modesty guidelines? really?

I wore a cheap button-through nightshirt thing from Peacocks but tbh couldn;t wait to get it off when I got in the pool
would have belted anyone who tried to make me labour in trousers .

tshirts can be tricky for bf access - try and find something unbuttonable

somewhathorrified · 09/11/2009 12:02

I was just going to wear one of my DH's old shirts.

heth1980 · 09/11/2009 13:49

I travelled into the birth centre wearing tracksuit bottoms and a top and ended up giving birth just waring the top I arrived in (happened quite quick!) This time round I hope I'll have time to change into a nightie to try and preserve my dignity a bit!

StealthPolarBear · 09/11/2009 13:51

yes, i gave birth in just what I happened to be wearing first time round, this time I bought some huge baggy T shirts and remembered to change before we set off for hospital.
Doesn't matter what you wear on your legs surely - you'll be taking them off!

CMOTdibbler · 09/11/2009 13:53

I wore a maternity night shirt. I don't think the MWs care what you wear if you are comfy - my friend couldn't bear anything touching her, so was nude in the pool

JackBauer · 09/11/2009 13:58

I arrived in hospital in long skirt and t shirt.
Changed to another t shirt.
Gave birth nekkid.

Modesty guidleines?
Are you serious? You are ina small room with you, Your DH/P and the MW, who do you need to be modest in front of!

The modesty guidelines at my hospital include a jacket & tie for male birth partners too.

DaftApeth · 09/11/2009 16:14

Modesty guidelines. Never heard of them

Ds - i wore a hospital gown

dd - can't remember it all happened so quickly after arriving. May have been another hospital gown or may have been a t-shirt.

You honestly won't care once you are in labour. Actually and probably not for a good few years while afterwards.

I do know someone who turned up in a negligee and the doc asked if she was going to a cocktail party

cyteen · 09/11/2009 16:33

at modesty guidelines.

I laboured naked for several hours, with MWs popping in and out of the room seemingly at random, before having to get back into my horrible sweaty clothes for transfer to hospital; ended up giving birth in just my vest.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 09/11/2009 19:39

I ended up in a breastfeeding strappy PJ top only! (DD was 2.5 weeks early so had to grab anything). Felt more comfy with no bottoms on and it helped the MW do the checks while I was kneeling down.

I would suggest putting some bottoms in your bag though as I had to walk along the corridor to the pool with a sheet wrapped around me!

MrsHappy · 09/11/2009 19:56

In the water I wore nothing at all. It was actually kind of nice being naked - had been boiling hot until that point, so much so that when I took off my sweaty PJs my midwife thought that my waters had been leaking...

Does the baby crawl down a trouser leg if you follow the modesty guidelines?

ThePhantomPlopper · 09/11/2009 20:01

I wore a hospital gown both times, I forget to pack something... both times!

Luxmum · 09/11/2009 20:24

For both DS I wore a hospital gown. Not sexy or particularly comfy, but really, it's the least of your concerns.. For natural birth of DS2, I remember looking down mid-labour at myself all spread-eagle and in those stirrups and realsing that not only was I wearing odd socks, but that BOTH of them had a hole in the toe. And this was a planned induction, so I'd no excuse not to find a proper pair of socks in time.. . The shame. Why have modest guidelines if you're going to have nurses and Drs staring and poking at your nethers for several hours..??

cyteen · 09/11/2009 20:35

Not to mention all the birthing ladies shouting FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK OH JUST FUCKING FUCK OFF AND DO SOMETHING USEFUL DH YOU GREAT TWAT, OWWWWWWW FUUUUUUUUUCK.

MrsBadger · 09/11/2009 20:44

cyteen were you eavesdropping on me?

victoriascrumptious · 09/11/2009 21:05

I expect in state hospitals it is the norm for women to gad about with their gory nether regions on show. It's a slippery slope from that to picking up the children from school in your pajamas with a can of special brew in your hand.

Horses for courses.

cyteen · 09/11/2009 21:27

But vic, they're so thirsty after all that book-learnin'.

KAEKAE · 11/11/2009 12:22

DaftApeth and Luxmum your comments are so funny, really made me laugh!!

I will be wearing fake tan on my legs at least!

OP posts:
DaftApeth · 11/11/2009 16:43

Oh god, ds came early and I was expecting to be waaay overdue like my sis.

Consequently, didn't get around to having my legs/bikini line waxed (let alone fake tanned). Spent first few hours after being induced apologising to everyone for my hairy legs.

Was mortified when a stunning doc came in and stuck his hand up my fanjo. Surprised he could get through

Didn't have time to worry about anything with dd - much better that way.
