Effielou · 04/05/2009 15:46

I'm having my 3rd c-section next month and am being sterlised after!! Drs orders and my choice too!!!
Has anyone had this or anyone know of people who have had this done after section??? How much longer did it take??? was it done under spinal-or epidural???

I'm seeing consultant next week and wondered if there were any questions I need to ask, that I may have not considered???

Thanks xx

Am having my 3rd C/S in a couple of weeks - I actually asked consultant about this but they said they didn't like doing it during or too close to birth. They think women are likely to change their minds etc....

My DH will probably have snip later in year!

yawningmonster · 04/05/2009 18:11

I have asked for this on Wed when my c-sect is now scheduled. Have been told will take all of 10 minutes and much easier to do when already open from section. I will have spinal for c-sect but think that is standard here.

nickschick · 04/05/2009 18:14

I was told that sterilization during a c section isnt as effective due to the tubes being swollen anyway .......

Ive had 3 c sections and it seemed to take ages after the delivery to get stitched up mostly because of scar tissue I think.

Divvy · 04/05/2009 18:23

Just out of interest, how many cs are you "allowed"?

nickschick · 04/05/2009 19:13

Ive had 3 and although I dont think its advisable theres nothing to stop me having another baby and I suppose theyd have to deliver it wouldnt they?

vbacqueen1 · 05/05/2009 17:01

There is no set number of "allowed" caesareans. However, it is generally agreed that the more you have, the more likely it is that complications can occur (not to mention the effects it can have on your future fertility).
I asked this question myself after I'd already had 3 caesareans as I wanted a another baby and wondered if it was "allowed" - after doing weeks and weeks of research I decided that a VBAC was safer than a 4th caesarean.
Even if your doctor tells you that you are not allowed to have another caesarean, how will they stop you getting pregnant again? And if you DO get pregnant, will they refuse to give you another CS? I think not

Divvy · 05/05/2009 18:30

I have had 2 so far, so one more isnt going to hurt.....much! Thanks

Effielou · 06/05/2009 13:41

Thanks for that ladies i've already been told that the effectiveness of sterilation after CS is less than a normal one but apparently they willtell you after- the success of it!!! I was told by my consultant- that I'm not allowed anymore- as my scar started to go with 2nd baby ( went into labour spontaneouly ) and I'm not to risk it, but after painful SPD, bad acne, arthritic hips and 3 kids-- they can have the lot if they want!!! lol

Good luck everyone xxxxxx

Hello
I've had 3 sections and wanted to be sterilised but my consultant said no. they used to offer it to women during sections but due to the fallopian tubes being swollen it was unlikely to be sucessful.

I would query how effective it was good luck with your c-section. My consultant told me I could have 5 sections but said that he looks at each case individually.

No I am not having any more 3 under 5 yrs is enough!!
Good Luck

Meglet · 06/05/2009 14:16

there was a crazy woman in Now/Chat/Reveal magazine some time ago and I think she had had 6 sections . I seem to remember she was bed ridden for the last pregnancy and was sterlised after the last baby as the risks for future babies and her health were massive. I just googled it but can't find a link, but I'm sure I haven't imagined it.

I know of a local NCT member that has had 4 and she says everything was fine.

I am sticking to just the 2!

Effielou · 06/05/2009 14:16

I think with my history and nearly 35 etc they ok'd it!!! I asked- they didn't offer IYKWIM!!! But I think its very much a postcode thingymegiggy!!! I may see another consultant who doesn't agree, as they don't garrentee the same person!! Mind you this is the 3rd appointment cancelled they may cancell another before next week!!!lol

just been told by mw that the heads 3/5th engaged-- so going to cross my legs for a few more weeks, as only 32+3 weeks gone!!

I had a CS with DS2 last year and was sterilised at the same time. There are NICE guidelines relating to this, have a look at them, I printed out a copy and took them with me to the appointment. Rather than the clip sterilisation, which has the higher failure rate due to the engorged tubes, I had my fallopian tubes removed. Not a decision to be taken lightly, but definately right one for me. best of luck.

maxbear · 07/05/2009 02:01

Sterilisation after a cs is less effective than if it is done at a later date to to swelling etc. Also in my experience as a midwife (hence posting in middle of night, on unusually quiet night shfit!) I have noticed that women who are sterilised at the time of cs sometimes have more post operative pain. Have any of you had this experience?

Effielou · 07/05/2009 10:35

Hi maxbear thanks for that I will bear that in mind I see my consultant next week so will discuss further perhaps DH can go find a couple of bricks afterall xx

JoeJoe1977 · 07/05/2009 11:05

I had a much better (less worse?!) post-operative experience with DS2 (when I was sterilised) than with DS1, but this was due to other factors causing complications after DS1.

Also, I meant guidance from the RCOG not NICE guidelines (although I'm sure that NICE will cover this somewhere), if you go to here then it outlines guidance for consent to CS. It's important that if you do want this then it is clearly documented in your notes prior to admission for CS. I ensured it was documented in my notes at every appointment, that in the event of me having a CS I wished to be sterilised. In the end I did go into labour, but had only reached 5cm after 14 hours so went ahead with CS.

Also make sure you discuss the technique used for the sterilisation, if it is just clip sterilisation or a simple cut in the tubes then there is a much higher risk of failure.

If I'd ended up with a VBAC then my DH would've been off to find a couple of bricks as well!!!

Effielou · 07/05/2009 11:34

Thanks JoeJoe1977 just read it and saved to my favs will pen some questions down for DR !!!

Just seen consultant today and he asked if sterilisation was something I still wanted (having told me at much earlier appointment they didn't like doing it during c/s).

He said if it has been discussed during pg they'll do it and remove whole tubes. As long as patient feels certain they won't change mind etc..

now I need to decide whether to do it or not...

DH can get snip but then maybe we should do it while in op anyway??

Ive had 3 c sections but wasn't sterilised. I wanted VBAC2 but they advised c/s as I was very high risk and had already lost 2 babies late in pregnancy. I have 5 DC and don't want anymore but feel weird about being permanently sterile. So I am going on coil and DH for snip instead. I do know people that have had 4 c/s with no problem but I already had alot of scar tissue after 3.

Effielou · 07/05/2009 16:21

redflipflops I feel the same way snip v me being done at same times a c-section!!
DH would if he REALLY has to-- but if I'm open then they can do it!! IYKWIM!!

If I could then I'd keep going then I would but this pregnancy has really put its toll on me, my DH and my kids and I don't think I could put us through it again!! The Drs have said no more- as my scar started to split in my second pregnancy- ( was due another elective- but DS wanted out earlier so a sort of failed, unplanned VBAC) So they ave strongly advised me to not have more. If I didn't do something as drastic as sterilation, then the temptation would always be there!!! So with the sterilation- I wouldn't have the choice.

jellybeans I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your babies-- lots of hugs xxx

Thanks Hanaflower, for pointing in the direction of this thread.
Hope I can be of use to you OP - Effielou.
I was due to have a sterilisation at Kings College hospital, when I gave birth to ds2 last october.
But becasue I ended up having a GA, becasue it turned into a emcs, the sterilisation was not done.
And I was gutted.

My MW also told me that if I had been done the pain of cs would be worse, but she said that was only what she had heard.

I am not sure of the actual FACTS and statistics of what % , having it done at cs, due to tubes being swollen. What is it less effective. Not sure. Ask them to prove it.

Anyway, I ended up being sterilised last week, when my ds2 was 6 months old. And the recovery was worse than both my cs's. I so wish they had done it at Kings, at birth time.
But there you go.
If I can be of any more help. Please ask.

If you want it. Demand it. Make sure it is put on your notes. Makes sure that your husband TELLS THEM, prior to you going into surgery, that you want it done. Then they should have no excuse.

Effielou · 07/05/2009 16:32

Hi Oblomov Thank-you so much for that!!! The info you get is mind blowing sometimes and tank-god for people ke you -who clears things up for me!!!

I will go armed with questions next week and get things clarified. I just know- if don't get it done straight away- then I chicken out-IYKWIM!!!

Hope your recovery is speedy. take care and put your feet up xxxxxx
Thanks again xx

Jellybeans - sorry for your loses. Partly why I'm thinking about this is that I don't think I want do the whole TTC thing again.... (I've had 2 early miscarriages). It's such a roller coaster ride of emotions!

I tried getting Mirena coil fitted after last baby but Dr couldn't insert it on two separate occasions - was a hassle. I actually like the idea of not having to worry about contraception anymore.

Effielou - I do feel sure that I don't want anymore babies but it's still a hard choice to make - it's so final! Although we were planning on DH having snip so this would save him having to go through that. I've got a couple of weeks to think it over...

redflipflops · 07/05/2009 16:41

that's interesting Oblomov. thanks for sharing your experience.

Effielou · 07/05/2009 16:42

Good luck with decision making I'm nearly 33 weeks, but they want to deliver me at 36 so a few weeks left- although I'm seeing the consultant next fri to discuss xx
lots of love xx
ps I agree at the hard decision xxx
