my 3rd was the worst ever! Sure its not what you wanted to hear though!

1st labour - induction, epidural, slept through most of it, 3 pushes, done!

2nd labour - natural, failed epidural, gas & air, 7hrs start to finish. 2 pushes, done.

3rd labour - natural, 12hrs of pure hell, being forced to be in positions i didnt want to be, being told i was too far for an epidural (6hrs before i actually gave birth)and the gas and air ran out on me..... said my waters had gone at 5.30am, they then broke the said waters at 11am. Once waters broke, DS born within 14mins but was the worst ever experience.

Cant ever remember being in so much pain, DD2 was gas and air only yet i didnt seem as painful in hindsight, and i seemed to cope a lot better with my 2nd birth than the 3rd.

Sorry.... hope someone comes on to say their 3rd was the best!!!

redrobin · 07/04/2009 18:25

oh GOD, loads of people say third is worse...i am due third in three weeks...help!

childrenchildreneverywhere · 07/04/2009 19:47

Mine got progressively easier each time. I needed less pain relief each time and each time got shorter (first and second stage).

I loved my third birth, in fact it was my favourite out of all of them (I have 4 - 4th was too fast for my liking).

HTH!

DiamondHead · 07/04/2009 19:48

Mine was fine.

Positivity goes a long way to acheiving a good outcome!
Good advice and good support
Allow those positive hormones to do their job!
Remain as upright and mobile as possible, try not to confine yourself to the bed. Let your body do the talking and go with it.
All the very best

A quick 3rd birth, half an hour

Disenchantegg3 · 07/04/2009 19:51

My first was ok (is your first I mean you have no idea do you?!) My 2nd was good.

My 3rd was, ermmm not the best.

Im not sure why, I mean my first 2 were in water, I just seemed to get into a rythmn quickly, but with n03 i just couldn't, i just sort of wandered, i tried to get in the bath but got out after 2 contractions.

Was faster though.

Wouldn't go for 4 after 3 though. After 2 I would have gone for 8! But 3 put me right off!

wilbur · 07/04/2009 19:52

3rd birth was way the best, but then it didn't involve any intervention and was at home. It was a bit too fast and still shockingly painful (no time for anything, not even gas and air) but fab compared to the others, like my body had been reading up on a textbook birth and following a perfect pattern. And ds2 was incredibly chilled and cute.

Disenchantegg3 · 07/04/2009 19:53

No pain relief for any of mine, but I think with 3 I just assumed I would be ok? Maybe I was too cocky? lol

lalalonglegs · 07/04/2009 20:14

My third was fine (two and three were home births in water). Painful, undignified but certainly no worse than the others.

QueenFee · 07/04/2009 20:20

Wish I hadn't read this thread now was hoping for a better go of it this time (13 weeks to go...)

MoshiMoshi · 07/04/2009 20:34

Third was faster and much more intense as a result. Midwife was a bit absent which meant it was a bit manic when she finally entered the room to find I was ready to push! I think the pattern for me has been increasingly faster and more intense. Will let you know about number 4!

EnterStageLeft · 07/04/2009 20:37

3rd was by far the easiest, a comfortable four hours, never got too tough, then pushing. Great. Good luck. AM sure it's all just chance each time.

Wisknit · 07/04/2009 20:45

3rd was easiest.

Hassled · 07/04/2009 20:47

My third was the worst. But DC3 was the only one who had to be induced, so probably not a fair comparison.

FAQinglovely · 07/04/2009 20:47

3rd was by far my easiest and best birth of all - I would do that another 10 times (was still bloody painful) but definitely repeatable

1st one took 3 days, absolutely exhausted, big episiotomy followed by anaemia and water infection...8lb13oz. 2nd ,pretty quick 2hours BUT intensely painful due to shoulder dystocia..then I went into shock and blacked out.... bigger baby...3rd time (due to previous events)planned C section 1.1/2 weeks early as estimated 10lb+ baby....ABSOLUTE BLISS ,wonderful experience, totally unstressed baby , fantastic recovery. A friend of mine has 4DC'S all vb's,two breech, pops them out like shelling peas! Lucky devil.

MumOeufMonsters · 07/04/2009 21:20

mine were all different. 1st was 3hrs and PAINFUL (gas and air and pethidine) but was first so no comparison,

2nd was pregnancy from hell but loved my labour - 1 hour from start to finish!!(although his shoulders got stuck)

3rd was a problem filled pregnancy but i enjoyed the labour most of all. only used gas and air and used it my way, when i was allowed to take the monitors off (had OC and placentas issues) i was free to be in whatever position i wanted and he slid out relatively easily. 5 hours after i started!

hannahsaunt · 07/04/2009 21:20

Fastest of the three at 37 minutes; lucky to be in hospital and not the library; didn't realise I was actually in labour - only went in to get funny pelvic bone pain checked out ... as such no time for adequate pain relief so not as well managed as ds2 in that sense (I was all for the drugs) and I was a bit shell shocked to be landed with the baby but great for healing etc. Was fine.

maxbear · 07/04/2009 21:22

Was with my sister for all three of hers, third was definately the best.

My best buddy had a difficult long third one last year after an easy second, ending with a haemorrhage, she still wants a fourth though

I am not letting horror stories put me off going for another one though >

SpookyMadMummy · 07/04/2009 22:07

I had Dd3 on Saturday - I went from 2cms at 10pm to giving birth at 10:42pm. Niggled and had false starts for a day or two beforehand, but was v quick in the end.

lizziemun · 07/04/2009 22:16

My 3rd was the worst.

1st silent labour only knew i was in labour once i got to the hospital with unexplained bleeding/waters going at 39wks. Was alreay 9cm and only had contraction to push dd1 (9lb 4oz)out about 3hrs.

2nd induced (drip) at 40 + 8. 4 hours from start to finish. very intense. dd2 (9lb 2oz)

3rd induced (Gel) at 40 + 11. 5 1/2 hours from start to finish ds (8lb).

This labour was more painfull as he was back to back, his heart rate wasn't recovering quick enough after each ctx so was rushed to theatre at 9cm. The doctors were discussing what was going to happen (epidural or emergency c- section) when i managed to get him out. He had the cord twice around his neck. It has taken me 3 weeks to recover from the birth after pulling my back muscles while in labour.

mersmam · 08/04/2009 14:33

My 3rd was the most intense but also the quickest (only 1.5hrs). I do think they tend to get quicker (at least hope so as my 4th is due in a few weeks!)

A lot of people seem to have good 2nd births and harder 3rd births and my belief is that it's to do with your expectations. First births are always a bit traumatic (no idea what to expect etc...) For second births we prepare ourselves much better and expect the worst - so it ends up being better than expected. Third births, we think ''I've done it twice before, and last time wasn't too bad'' - do less to prepare ourselves and expect it to be OK (and also generally have less time to read up about birth and rest due to other DCs) - so it ends up being worse than expected... just my experience anyway Goodness knows how the 4th will be!!

dottyaboutstripes · 08/04/2009 15:44

My 3rd was the easiest and least painful of my births (I am currently 32 weeks with #6)

I've heard that after #5 it gets harder again!!
