I did after my 3rd baby (the haemorrhoids arrived with her ,literally) I really feel for you as I can remember how painful it was

I had some anusol cream that the mw got for me and it helped a lot.
maybe think of a ring cushion to sit on (esp if you are breastfeeding as that's when I suffered most, in one place for a long time)
I think those cool gel pads might be helpful too.
also lots of fibre in your diet and laxative (check 1st if you are br/feeding) to stop it getting worse.

avoid standing for too long and have lots of fluids.

take care and if its any consolation, mine didnt' last all too long xx

damdaffs · 04/04/2009 14:55

hi

i had them after my first birth and they went but now im pregnant again they're back!

if you fancy trying something 'alternative', homeopathic hamamelis is meant to be good for them. other than that, main thing, as ouch says, is to avoid getting constipated and having to strain, this will make you really suffer and they'll start throbbing....

shish · 04/04/2009 22:26

How long did they take to go?? I've been using anusol since Monday, as advised by m/w but not much luck yet. She's advised me to get prescrption for something else from GP

Damdaffs, is the homeopathic hamamelis a cream??

The stitches are healing really well so it's such a shame that I have this now as I also have ds1 to look after as well as baby

Drinking lots of water seemed to help, and rest.

girlywhirly · 06/04/2009 09:30

Mine took three weeks to shrink to nothing. Take a daily dose of Lactulose to soften your poo, and use Anusol pessaries and/or ointment after you've been. Make sure you wash well after each bowel movement, before you apply ointment.

You can make a cool pack with a few frozen peas in a poly bag, wrap a piece of kitchen roll around it and place against the piles!

I'm so sorry for you, they really take the pleasure away from having your newborn!

jeminthecity · 06/04/2009 09:36

I had them too, and it WAS incredibly painful, I really feel for you. first week was the worst I think.

I had a reaction to Anusol, and found Germaloids help more in terms of soothing the pain. Lying down was better than standing up, obviously, but that's not really practical all the time!

If they are really bad, try to see if your GP can offer anything else.

Hope you start to feel some relief from them soon.

shish · 06/04/2009 10:05

Thank you all. Really hoping they will start to shrink soon. Seems to be no improvement so far. I'm sure I would feel better if I could see they were starting to improve..

I can remember the agony clearly. I had a c-section so wasn't really expecting them.

shish · 06/04/2009 15:36

GP has prescribed anusol+hc and anusol suppositries. I'm not too comfortable about using the suppositries but am desperate for this discomfort to go. So, here's hoping this all works..

It's one of the side-effects that noone ever mentions before you give birth! I had this problem after both births - used some sort of pessaries (was in France so can't remember what they were.)I do rememember they didn't last long (two or three weeks at most). A friend of mine used to sit on a rubber ring for extra comfort until hers had subsided. Thank God for Mumsnet - I didn't have anywhere to raise this issue eight years ago when dd was born!

cyteen · 06/04/2009 16:00

The piles were the worst My sympathies.

The midwife that did my 24 hour postnatal check was extremely sympathetic, having had them badly herself, and gave me some great advice (prepare yourself for TMI). She advised taking a warm bath, then once you get out, lying on your side with one leg raised i.e. propped on the toilet block. Apply whatever ointment you're using and gently massage the area - this is to stimulate bloodflow back to the piles and help them shrink. I had the devil's own arsegrapes after birth but they were gone within two weeks, so I definitely think this helped me.

Another good tip I gleaned from MN: apply Vaseline around your anus before having a poo.

Never thought I'd find myself discussing this sort of thing but needs must when pain and discomfort come calling

LackaDAISYcal · 06/04/2009 16:05

I got given a bottle of distilled witch hazel on the PN ward that I kept in the fridge. That on a piece of muslin or kitchen towel applied regularly was very soothing.

I also got given some of the little sachets of irrigation fluid from the hospital and froze them like ice pops. I'd pop one in my knicks wrapped in witch hazel soaked muslin or pushind into the end of the maternity pad.

I was advised that pelvic floor exercises are good as they help blood flow to the earea and hence healing.

Mine took a few weeks to go completely as well but it was much more comfortable after he first week.

cyteen · 06/04/2009 17:15

Yes, pelvic floor exercises definitely helped my stitches as well

It's such a magical time

Periwink · 09/04/2009 15:09

Mine took 8 weeks to dissappear - I used Anusol cream and suppository and yes the pelvic floor exercises are suppossed to help.

shish · 10/04/2009 10:29

I'm actually finding it all quite depressing now..

OP posts:
shish · 10/04/2009 10:31

Can you only use one round of the suppository??

OP posts:
shish · 15/04/2009 13:12

I've been given a stronger steroid ointment and suppository yesterday. If they don't heal in a week they are talking about bursting them with a needle

They are starting to feel soft and squijjy. is that how they feel when they are starting to shrink???

Hi, after birth I had the "worst hemorrhoids" my midwife had ever seen (her own words). The GP prescribed Proctosedyl suppositories and ointment (to use AM/PM) and they went away (almost entirely) in a few days. The first sign of hope was that they felt softer and then they shrank.
I would definitely recommend using these products. Good luck!

shish · 19/04/2009 21:24

They definately feel a lot softer but don't seem to be going very fast. GP has put me on scheriproct suppositories and ointment. Have been using these since Tuesday..

OP posts:
shish · 22/04/2009 19:32

They're still not going anywhere I think they're here to stay...

OP posts:
shish · 23/04/2009 12:23

When will they go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
brettgirl2 · 23/04/2009 20:54

I've got them too Shish. Also have suppositories and ointment from GP, they have gone down a bit but are definitely still there. It's just awful isn't it? I'm just glad that I was still in the post labour 'embarrassed by nothing state' when she had a poke around

shish · 24/04/2009 14:30

Spoke to obstetrcian yesterday who has sai I should go and see a general surgeon as it has been 4 weeks now

OP posts:
brettgirl2 · 24/04/2009 16:40

Mine are a week old. GP was threatening banding for one that she thought may not go down. It's 'wait and see' time for me!

I can't help thinking that ceasarian (sp?) recovery would be preferable.
