moondog - yes permission is supposed to be sought first (although years ago you just got it regardless). It is however fairly routine although a number of hospitals have changed to syntocinon only. It has far less side effects although blood loss may be a bit more. Physiological third stage is offered now for labours with no intervention.
Syntometrine (combined syntocinon and ergometrine) can also result in retained placenta. The ergometrine component can make the cervix clamp down before the placenta is delivered.

mears · 22/04/2005 21:29

Placenta can take longer physilogically but baby gets blood it should have had as nature intended. Increases baby's iron stores. Nature is pretty good when left to her own devices.

moondog · 22/04/2005 21:34

Thanks mears.
Do you ever get sick of answering all these questions?

expatinscotland · 22/04/2005 21:39

I did. I was starving! It had been well over 24 hours since I'd eaten. Even tho they put an IV in me, they didn't connect me to a drip, so I was beyond dehydrated and I wanted to eat and drink something. I was immediately sick, but I thought it might be from the epidural?

Next time, I'm gonna ask for some saline or some electrolytes b/c that dehydration took ages to get over.

lapsedrunner · 22/04/2005 21:51

4 or 5 times during labour(assume it was drugs given with epidural), not an experience I plan to repeat !

pixiefish · 22/04/2005 22:06

yes, after, also went really cold and couldn't stop shaking/ think this was due to speed of second stage

Pinotmum · 22/04/2005 22:07

After dd I was sick - illuminous green liquid - but not after ds,

jampots · 22/04/2005 22:09

remember shivering uncontrollably during my labour after I'd had my epidural sited - most horrid.

worse than me puking when ds was being delivered was the fact that after he was delivered he pee'ed straight back in the wound

mears · 22/04/2005 22:09

expatinscotland - you had an epidural without a drip? Very dodgy.

No moondog, I don't get sick of answering questions

Pinotmum · 22/04/2005 22:10

Jampots - eekk!! ouch!!

expatinscotland · 23/04/2005 15:42

Yes, mears. They put the IV needle in before the anesthetist came in to do the epi and just left it. No bag of saline, nothing to drink. I stopped being thirsty after a while. I should have said something then, b/c I once got so dehydrated from a stomach virus I wound up in hospital, and the GP who sent me to hospital after some blood pressure checks had told me that a person who stops feeling thirsty is dangerously dehydrated.

Needless to say, I didn't have much energy to push anymore after a while and felt like s* for days afterwards.

Threw up badly during labour with both dses. Only stopped feeling nauseous after the birth.

tiptop · 23/04/2005 16:26

I was sick both times after giving birth and I thought it was just me! Why did it not get mentioned in the numerous antenatal classes we had? Grrr. I remember being asked if I wanted to have the injection. I agreed as I thought it was safer to have the placenta out and have it over and done with. If I'd known more about it, I'd have weighed up the pros and cons before deciding.

fuzzywuzzy · 23/04/2005 16:47

First time I didn't have the injection and threw up at the begining of labour but not thereafter.....
Second time I had the injection to expel the placenta and I did throw up.

Louise1980 · 23/04/2005 17:52

I threw up during early stages with ds1 and then after as i got off the bed to go on to the ward. Had shivers all the way through.

With ds 2 i vomited once but midwife said that was due to the diamorphine injection i had to slow my labour! I didnt want it slowed i just wanted it over but i didnt seem to have a choice! Something to do with babys head being too high. No shivers.

jessicasmummy · 23/04/2005 18:04

sick a little bit during labour with jess - think that was more to do with the epidural - and of course the shakes - it was terrifying for dh but i knew to expect it! lets see how number 2 goes!

sphia · 23/04/2005 18:06

Hallo!

I threw up with my first but that was because of the injection to expel the placenta. With no.2 I had him at home and had a natural 3rd stage with no injection for the placenta. I felt FAB!
My midwives told me that the 2 main side effects of the syntometrine (for the placenta) is vomitting and shivering..NICE! Wish they would tell us these things before they jab us with drugs we probably dont even need!

motherinferior · 23/04/2005 18:09

After the first, with an epidural; not after the second, even though I'd had a syntocynin injection.

Blackduck · 23/04/2005 18:11

Wasn't sick, just shook like a leaf and couldn't stop...

BadgerBadger · 23/04/2005 22:54

Didn't with DD1 and did have syntometrine.
Didn't with DD2 and didn't have syntometrine.
I don't 'do' puking!

mummytosteven · 23/04/2005 22:55

no, but 1)had syntometrine and 2)was sick loads during labour (had syntocin and diamorphine during labour)

lavenderrr · 23/04/2005 22:57

no but was so weak wnated chocolate and nearly falling asleep with feebleness.

slug · 24/04/2005 13:19

Oh yes, all through labour. The gas was the trigger, a bit unfortunate as that was the only pain relief I was offered. I remember it being excrutiatingly painfull bbeing stiched up afterwards. 'Use the gas' said the doctor. 'It will make me puke' I said. She didn't believe me so I demonstrated....... all over her

NannyJo · 24/04/2005 13:26

yes yes yes! as soon as DS arrived i was given him to hold, then spent the next forty minutes throwing up over the top of him in to the bowl, not nice was given a jab to stop it in the end. i think it was all the emotions that brought it on, didn't have gas and air cos it made me feel funny.
