Not a homebirther personally but wanting to offer support to Boobz and others who are going for a home birth . . .

Mad, lovely story! I am for you. Sounds fabulous. I am 37 weeks today, so starting to get a little nervous...three more days of work and then I will relax a bit. Have to go and get a TENS machine at the weekend, then it's just sitting...and waiting...to see what happens. Actually, it's a lot of trying to do housework and
opalfruity how are you today? What time does your DH get home? Hope your BP is down and you are feeling better.

flybynight · 17/03/2010 12:47

That is a wonderful story Mad. I'm so glad everything went so close to plan.

Opalfruity, I know how you feel - my husband keeps disappearing off for 2 or 3 nights of the week (I'm 35 weeks). I don't have any family within 200 miles and three children at home - I just want him to stay put!

Bettymum · 17/03/2010 13:25

Oops, just noticed I tailed off in the middle of a sentence there. It's all that thinking about housework and freezing meals.

opalfruity · 17/03/2010 15:35

Thanks ladies.

Have had on/off crampy period type pains all day today but nothing more exciting. Luckily DH has just rung to say he is on the train home (with a piece of carrot cake for me from one of his work colleagues who felt sorry for me!). So he should be back in a few hours.

motherofsnortpigs · 17/03/2010 17:08

Well done Mad Great story, so glad it all worked out for you.

Opalfruity I hope you are installed on the sofa enjoying cake by now.

If you are interested, Full Fact have just looked at the latest Government policy on giving women and their partners the right to choose where to give birth.

I have taken the liberty of including the link:

Woo hoo! just got back from impromtu meeting with consultant midwife...and letter is finally in my file, (at 35 weeks!)saying I am booked in for homebirth (albeit against advice, but hey ho) and ready for my home visit now!

Come on baby!

Makes me feel much better after having to have a day off work due to no sleep as kept waking myself up with weird breathing and snoring...however day off meant was able to go to unexpected meeting, so swings and roundabouts I guess!

I hope everyone else is well...would love to hear some more lovely homebirth strories now please, if anyone will oblige...

donttrythisathome · 17/03/2010 20:11

Hi everyone.

Sorry I haven't been on in a while. Been trying to have a break from MN to relax myself a bit.

Congrats to Mad - what a wonderful homebirth story!

Also congrats to Intravenouscoffee and heth - brilliant!

I am 16 days overdue now so my dreams of a homebirth are fading fast. To make it worse my doula is no longer on call for me. She would make it if she could but her next client has already gone into labour so she is with her at the moment .

Booked in for an induction on Friday (40 plus 18). Maybe it will happen before then?

Have had two doses of castor oil ....

Waves to nocoffeenoworkee - of course I remember you! You disappeared into the ether though so hadn't a clue where you were! Hoping you get the homebirth - absolutely sure you will.

Pregnantpeppa - just a thought on the doula.

do you have a friend you could ask to be with you. i would have liked a doula but was unsure for the same reasons as you. so i asked my friend. she had had 2 homebirths herself and i knew she would be a great support. as my DH just stood there like a bunny in the headlights at the birth of my DS!

must say - when my DH said you are doing well - i felt like saying how the hell would know but coming from a friend who has been through childbirth i didnt feel patronised - just encouraged.

just a thought, if there is a person you would feel comfortable with. and i had the most fab homebirth

Fathers in the birthing room - that's a vexing one. On one hand, I would feel desolate if he wasn't there as we are very close. On the other hand, he is marginally more useful that a chocolate teapot and mad4mainecoons has put her finger on why exactly. Try as he might, he has no idea what is happening to me.

That said, he's become progressively better since the first (precipitate) birth when he kept sucking his teeth and telling me I had a long way to go, as I banged my head against the wall. He also complained I was stopping him reading his book!

Bettymum · 19/03/2010 13:20

OMG at your DH and his book flybynight!
peppa I can't really remember what my DH did when DD was born, but it was such a long labour and in the end it all got so hazy with the drugs, but I was glad that he was just kind of there in the room. The key thing I think is to be as comfortable as you can with the people around you, like you I don't think I'd want too many people there.

ZombiePlanB · 20/03/2010 20:12

ooooo Pregnantpeppa how did you persuade your midwife to sign off a HBAC. That's what I'd like but not sure what to say......

Caitni · 24/03/2010 21:07

Quick post from me - new baby has severely limited my MNing! Apologies, I've not had time to catch up on the thread.

I ended up going overdue to 42 weeks and was induced, so no home water birth for me. My induction was a little eventful - almost instant hyperstimulation leading to a crash section because of repeated bouts of distress on the baby's heartrate trace. Because of meconium stained waters, I wouldn't have had my home birth in any case, which has helped me get over my highly medicalised birth iykwim.

But the good news is that my son, Richard Walter, was born safely last Tues 16th March , weighing a healthy 4.1kg (9lbs 1oz in old money) and is an absolute delight. I can't believe he's 8 days old already...especially as it feels like we've always known each other

I was very to not have had my home birth and to not even have experienced natural labour, and the two weeks going overdue were psychologically the toughest of the whole pregnancy. But now that my DS is here it's all been worth it. The memories are fading a little more each day.

Luckily, the consultant who did my section has had actually had a home birth herself and is very supportive of it. She was the one who brought a touch of humanity to the madness that was the labour room and actually came to see me the day after and yet again reassured me that the c-section was to do with getting him out because the hours of constant contracting were hard on him rather than because of an inherent "fault" with me. And she said I'd be perfectly right to consider a home vbac in the future!

Very best of luck to all you home birthers. I'll lurk when I can and look forward to reading many more happy birth stories

morethemerrier · 24/03/2010 21:23

Congrats Caitni!

Glad to hear that although your homebirth plans did not work out, he arrived safe and you are both well, and at the end of the day that is all that matters!!!

Well done and enjoy your little boy!

x

Bettymum · 25/03/2010 14:22

Congratulations Caitni, enjoy your little boy x

donttrythisathome · 25/03/2010 16:30

Quick post here too.

Baby born 40 plus 17!! Bay Amaryllis is absolutely gorgeous and feeding very well, though I need some serious practice. There's a little pic on my profile which I will leave a day or two.

Had a semi homebirth with a dramatic ending...

Read about it here

Bettymum · 25/03/2010 17:14

Aww, what a little cutie all wrapped up in her blanket and her hat!
Amazing story, well done for staying so calm, I think I would have found that hard. Huge congratulations, good luck with the feeding.

opalfruity · 29/03/2010 05:47

I am running on pure adrenaline here - 7lb 9oz baby girl born last night at 5 to 8 AT HOME as planned and with no tears or any other problems. I have never been punctual in my life so giving birth on my due date is surreal.

I think I'm in love.

smilehomebirth · 29/03/2010 10:30

Fantastic! Congrats opalfruity.

Bettymum · 29/03/2010 11:22

Yay, well done opalfruity! You must have been buzzing to be posting at 5.47 in the morning . Congratulations, it's lovely when things go to plan!

donttrythisathome · 31/03/2010 23:02

Congrats opalfruity - sounds fab!

PrincessTweetz · 01/04/2010 08:56

I'm a week late posting, but I had my homebirth last Thursday morning and my lil man, Jude Alistair Charles was born at 6.26am, weighing 7lbs!!!!!!
The official time of my labour was 4 and 1/12 hours, an hour longer than my dd's labour, but I actually started having pains at around 8.45pm on Wednesday night...more like a continuous period pain rather than contractions though.
It went really well, my midwives were absolutely lovely all the way through, and I loved how informal it all felt..the midwives just chatted amongst themselves, leaving me bouncing on my ball!! They obviously did the relevant checks on me and bump though!!!
My waters never went by themselves, I pushed them out which was a bit wierd....and they kind of shot upwards like a little explosion....my partner was laughing because I couldn't say sorry enough for nearly getting the midwife in the face!!
The pushing kind of took me by surprise...more so because it felt like I wasn't pushing for a lot of contractions...it was basically one big contraction with lots of pushing and blowing and the head was out!
It was my perfect birth, cuz I went into labour at night, so my dd was in bed asleep, and my mum was able to come and hold my hand , and then when dd woke up, about 25 minutes before Jude was born, she was able to miss the gory bits that she wanted to miss, and sit with dd upstairs until she could come down and meet her baby brother!!
I''ve tried to keep the story quite short...if only so Bettymum doesn't have to be bored by reading the same story twice [grin} I'm off to do some much needed cuddling...not by Jude...I need them hehe !! Good luck to everyone who's planning a homebirth...it's definitely worth it!!!
