There is a scary post on here at the moment about stitches and pelvic floor...

Just wonderign if anyone didnt need any stitches first time around. And if not what do you attribute it to?

Frame/hips/shoe size/weight/ perenial massage???

Dabihp, didn't tear at all with my first baby (6lb 7) and didn't at all with my second (9lb 2). And had shoulder dystocia with him too. Midwives couldn't believe it. I attribute it to 50 pelvic-floor exercises throughout both pregnancies. And maybe yoga too. FWIW I always thought I'd have a hard time giving birth as am narrow-hipped.

my feet are 3 1/2 & thru pregnancy I kept asking if this would be a problem or was old wives tale & was told "we'll find out when you're in labour". Anyway, no stitches, very quick, so painful ...

well haven't really read the whole thread but there's my experience:
1st baby had a small tear which healed naturally

  • did perineal massage for the last month as midwife had told us at the classes, I used wheatgerm oil -I had a quick delivery just under 4hours from 1st contraction to ds born I was drinking raspberry leaf tea during 3rd trimester as it said a leaflet from Napiers herbal health care (www.napiers.net) -I didn't really pushed him out but let the contractions deliver him, from the time his head crowned and I felt the burning sensation I din't push and I asked the midwives to pour water to relief the sensation, although I felt that I wasn't really following what they were telling me to do eg. push, breathe etc throughout I just did what it felt natural to me at the time or else put it what my body told me I felt that I could have delivered him 30min earlier with 2 pushes but I decided to take it slow. that's what I think made the difference. after I apologised for sounding obnoxious and not doing what they wanted me, the midwife said I must hv been intuned with my body, great! pain relief: gas and air at the ambulance on the way to hospital delivered him lying on the bed (always wanted to deliver standing or squating, but nevermind) -baby was 3kg I'm small build, wide hips, shoe size 37 eur, think 4 uk my grandmother was always known for popping her babies out like peas, on her last months she was always afraid to go for a poo in case she delivers in the toilet [amazed face] hope it helps

DS1= I had more stitches that the hem of a skirt, medium frame, hips, 9.5 st, no massage, and I'm sorry to say I have a shoe sive 4. He was only 7lb 11oz but tangled up in cord so head, arm and shoulder all coming at once hense so many stitches.

Ds2 lots again with DS2, but very quick labour. 8lb 5oz.

Ds3 small graze(!!!MW's words for it, I'm just quoting her.....a graze on my quim.....I find that hilarious) that healed naturally.

blueteddy · 15/04/2005 20:42

I didn't have any stitches with either of my ds's, although I did have a small tear with both, which healed on its own (still blimin hurts when you have a wee!!!) & I had an epidural with both!
I am usually a size 10, 5ft 6 & I have a size 6 shoe.

First baby 9lb 7oz had stitches - forcep delivery.

Second baby 9lb - normal delivery - no stitches.

Mum2Ela · 15/04/2005 20:57

No stitches with either of mine and DS came out with his hand next to his head (owch!). I put it down to luck . . . . !

sandycheeks · 15/04/2005 21:19

I'm quite short at 5"2 and size 5 feet. I did not have stitches with my first 6lb14.5 , nor did I have stitches with my second 9"8 . Although I'm not active now I did do a lot of gymnastics at school and was able to do the splits. Would not recomend this for h.pregnant women to try though

Mowjo · 15/04/2005 21:38

I was told it was down to how elastic your skin is naturally. Dry skin: more likely to need stitches.
Certainly true in my case. Midwife who delivered my son told me later "I didn't expect you to tear so much: things must have been pretty tight down there..."
Hmm, I liked to think so...

sandycheeks · 15/04/2005 22:01

just realised that ds was 9lb 8oz not 9 inches as I've implied

sandycheeks · 15/04/2005 22:08

Gosh dinny we have had a similar senario here too. ds's shoulders got stuck and they had to wrench him out, and still no stitches.
I think you might have a point Mowjo, I have greasy skin

First baby due in Sept, but was talking to a midwife friend of my aunt's, who said that delivering while squatting or standing is more likely to result in tears because it's harder to control the speed and angle that the baby comes out at and therefore is more likely to result in tears...

alexsmum · 16/05/2005 10:50

no stitches with ds1- and laboured in pool.
7 stitches with ds2 and didn't use the pool. convinced water is what made the difference.

Kelly1978 · 16/05/2005 10:51

I gave birth to ds in a strange position on my side and needed stitches, she was 8lb. ds was 9lb7, gave birth to him on my bck, and no stitches.

I am 5'2" with narrow hip bones, shoes size 5, baby was 8lb 7oz. I was lying down to labour, no massaging, and had an epidural. Labour was 42 hours start to finish..

No stitches though. I attribute this to luck.
