Not read all replies so apologies if this is a repeat

Maybe her body is just not ready to go into labour and she just needs to go home? Some women genetically have longer pregnancies (does she know how long her mother was pregnant with her?)

At 12 days past her due date she is technically not yet "overdue" and as long as baby is moving well and there is still plenty of fluid around the baby then there is no problem with waiting a little longer.

theya re quite far from the hospital so i think she would rather stay whre she was

she WOULD rather be at home, but is afraid to go

they have now started her on the drip

ok, so she is now on the drip so must be on labour ward. there must have been some dilation then? i.e some progress?

Oh dear. Did you see my thread in Oct naily, when I was induced with ds? Twas somewhat of an epic.

You need to know whether it's her first (am guessing so) and what state her cervix is in. If it's still posterior and she's not dilated at all, then they won't be able to break her waters, which would normally be the course of action once they decide to give up on prostoglandin. My hospital will normally do a max of 4 doses of prosto before wanting to take other action.

Oh, missed that they had started drip. Bugger. If they've done this without breaking waters (presumably cause they can't) then there's a fair chance she could end up with a c-sec.

IME, the drip comes after ARM , if the ARM does not kick things off, so am hoping it is because SIL has progressed a little.. certainly she will be having hte drip on labour ward. hope she is able to sit on a birth ball or stand leaning on the bed rather than lie down

fingers crossed for her!

I had the drip (and an epidural) and had the baby VB in less than 6 hours, no forceps no nothing...do not despair yet she may be one of those (like me) whose body / baby responds really well to the drip. NB my waters had already broken. Hope she goes on ok.

I want one

I know that obviously progressing down the route of progression towards a VB is what is hoped for. I just want to add a note of caution.

I have known 3 people go over-due (so not a huge sample).
One of those was not particularly favourable when pessaries administered but then progressed well to about 7cm when it was realised that it was an undiagnosed breech..cue EC. She had gone overdue as babies bum isn't as good as babies head in starting labour.
The other 2 both ended up in EC too (I think one was similar to your SIL - no progress after induction. The other had slow progress and baby in distress). In both cases it was found that the baby had cord wrapped tightly around neck (twice in one case) which was stopping baby descend, which meant there was no pressure on cervix to aid dilation. In both cases a VB could have been very dangerous option for baby.

All I am saying is that sometimes going overdue and failure to progress can have causes. And that there should be acknowledgement that sometimes these slow progressions could indicate other factors preventing labour which need attention.

Yes, my DD was tangled in her cord, hence no pressure, hence no dilation, hence emergency c-section after a week of interventions.

But hey, I am LURKING LIKE MAD on this thread in hope of a different outcome for nailpolish's SIL, but more than anything, just a lovey little niece or nephew for her to cuddle - and soon!

Yes I am too...I just didn't want them to remember that sometimes there is a genuine reason why a mother doen't go into labour/progress well

This is a thread I'm gonna have to follow now...

If dp wasn't realy busy and I wasn't recovering from 2 births in 5 days recently I'd be down there, with the physical and emotional support...

This thread is very apt, it is DS1's 12th birthday today and I was in the same situation 12 years ago.

He was due on New Year's Day.

Fortunately no medical reasons for him being so late he just didn't want to come out.

I spent several hours just walking up and down the ward and it finally started to happen.

Really hoping all goes as well for your SIL [fingers crossed]

I too am really interested in induction threads after my experience. What the doctors told me in hospital after my section was that once the induction process begins that they follow a list of interventions, prostin, drip, ARM, then let you labour for a good while, if this doesnt work then c section. I hope your sil has a not too taxing VB with rosie after going through all this, and she is not too exhausted. I had the whole shebang over 2 days, prostin, drip, ARM, induced on the thurs, c section on the saturday at 7pm, needless to say that sat afternoon, i informed the midwife even if i did get to 10cm i wouldnt be able to push because of the tiredness that the 2 days worth of contractions had wrought, and basically got very aggressive, id had enough. I think some peoples bodies work with induction, some dont, maybe the babies are not ready. Is your sil able to sleep?? i really hope it works out for her and your family.
