Mumof2rugrats- I was also a size 6-8 ( still am) before pregnancy and still gave birth to an 8 pounder. Evryone sed id only have a 5 pounder. My sister who was pregnant at same time as me is bigger built and her bump was bigger them mine and she had a 6 pounder

idobelieveinfairies · 15/01/2009 11:39

DS 3 was 10lb at 2 weeks early, just gas & air a a few grazes.

DS 4 was my smallest singleton 8lb 5 ozs...had G&A, pethidine, epidural and lots and lots of swearing..they induced me as they thought he was going to be bigger than ds 3.

My biggest set of twins were 7lb 5 and a half and 7lb 12...now that was one very heavy bump!

Weegle · 15/01/2009 11:49

I think I trump them all - I have one DC - he was 12lb 12oz. Not a vaginal though, was EMCS as he was physically too big head to even go through my pelvis. He wasn't fat just looked about 4 months old! He's now 2yrs 7 months and is the height of an average 5 and a half year old... very very tall boy, way off the top of the charts all his life so far but normal in every other way

God I am scared to think if I have a number 2 what size it will be!

mumoftoby · 15/01/2009 16:06

DS1 8lbs 12ozs.
DS2 10lbs 14ozs.

Both naturally with only gas and air, one and a half hours after arriving at hospital. I am 5'6". Good luck but i am sure you will be fine.

madwomanintheattic · 15/01/2009 16:26

weegle - omw!

dare you actually have any more?

AliandHerScallywag · 15/01/2009 16:26

Oh heavens, this thread has made me feel slightly ill wondering if a second dc would be bigger than DS who was 9lb 13oz (admittedly a tiddler compared to some on here). He was an em c/s after an induction at 40+14 got me fully dilated but nothing happened thereafter. Afterwards, when I saw my community mw I asked her if she had thought ds would be big, she told me that she doesn't say this to mothers if she has her suspicions as it only worries them.

alicecrail · 15/01/2009 16:44

Hiya mumrugrat. You really want more?? I'm hoping to go same way as mum and have them get smaller!!

cmotdibbler · 15/01/2009 16:46

I was 10lb 11oz - born after a 5 hour labour and with no pain relief at all. My mum is a star

mumof2rugrats · 15/01/2009 17:13

hiya alice crail i hope i get to have smaller babys like mum not as small though but tbh i dont think i could of got any bigger as i did i was the size of a house lol

dizzydixies · 15/01/2009 17:15

DD1 was 10lb4oz
DD1 was 11 lb 1 oz
DD3 was 9lb 14oz

Lulumama · 15/01/2009 17:17

DS was 7 lb 13 , head circ 35 cm

DD was 7 lb 8, head circ 32

so very little difference in weight but much smaller head.

DS was 39 + 1 and DD was 40 weeks on the nose

Lizzylou · 15/01/2009 17:18

Weegle
I know I am slightly obsessed with this, but how did you carry him whilst pg? With DS2 I was asked if I was having twins/had must be due any day comments after about 5.5mths....

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 15/01/2009 17:22

nope, can't beat you, op! My first was 10lb4oz and my second was 10lb5oz.

first - emergency, he got stuck and he was left with erbs palsy. I lost a LOT of blood, big drama, won't bore you with the details .

second - no probs. cord was round his neck, but he wasn't in distress and came out fine.

childrenchildreneverywhere · 15/01/2009 17:32

Have a look at some of the stories on here:

www.bigbaby.org.uk

They might balance out some of the more negative ones ;-)

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 15/01/2009 17:39

ds1 - 9lb3oz, emerg cs
ds2 - 9lb11oz, 4 hour labour, no pain relief and just a graze.

tittybangbang · 15/01/2009 18:42

DD1 9lbs 6oz - 3 day labour, epidural, forceps birth

DS1 10lbs 12oz (only weighed a few hours after the birth though when he'd peed and pood so may have been more than this) - born at home. Good birth, also despite shoulder dystocia. Brilliant midwife - no stitches! Got a picture of ds on my profile and you can see what a lardy boy he is. I had gestational diabetes which wasn't diagnosed until very late and he had lots of fat around his abdomen and upper body. He's a very small boy now.

DS2 my lightest at 9lbs 3oz, but longest and with biggest head circumference. I think my brutal gd-beating pregnancy diet kept him skinny - he had terrible 'chicken legs' when he was born and went up through two centiles in the next 6 weeks while being exclusively breastfed. 3 days in active labour with this one, but a normal birth, no perineal damage. Only an hour or two of g&a towards the end.

Weegle · 15/01/2009 18:52

lizzylou I'm probably not a very positive story - my pregnancy with DS triggered a rheumatic condition which has left me registered disabled for the last 2 years and in constant pain... but hey I'm in a good phase... and it started at 12 weeks so obviously nothing to do with his weight! But there's no doubt his weight/size did cause damage to my pelvis. I was HUGE. I'm not small (was born 10lb 8oz myself!), I'm 6ft tall but nonetheless my stomach looked like a roadmap of stretchmarks and my bump was massive. There's a photo of me and my antenatal class all together between 37-40 weeks and my bump is just ridiculous! I have been told if I have another it will be a caesarean at 37 weeks but that's possibly more to do with my arthritic problems rather than size of DS. The bump was also very high - went out like a shelf under my bust! What's daft is I had a scan at 36+4 where the sonographers exact words were "he's no tinkerbelle" yet no one thought to mention to me he was off the scale of measurements and that therefore maybe going 2 weeks overdue possibly wasn't the best policy!

Lizzylou · 16/01/2009 11:53

Gosh Weegle, poor you.
How are you now?
I can't believe they let you go 2 weeks over
The MW was so concerned at DS2's size that she said she would give me a sweep early (at a few days overdue), he was 2 days early in the end.
My bump was massive, all out in front, it went into a point I used to knock people over in the supermarket/burnt it on the cooker/iron!

Lizzylou · 16/01/2009 11:55

Titty, your pic of your DS1,(you have very gorgeous DC) could be DS2 at the same age! I loved him all chunky, I get scared round little newborns anyway.

auntyspan · 16/01/2009 13:13

My sister's DS1 was 11lb 3oz (2 weeks over, em c-section)
Her DS2 was 10lb (elective c-section, 40 weeks)
Her DS3 was 7lb 9oz (elective c-section, 40 weeks) but she was diagnosed with GD at 24 weeks.

My DD1 was 10lb, so it clearly runs in the family!

Howdie · 16/01/2009 13:43

Big babies are NOT harder to birth, it is a complete myth.

Baby's position is MUCH more important than it's size. I've seen plenty little tiddler babies cause really difficult labours because I think they have more room to get themselves into awkward positions and do things like bring an arm/hand up by their head which can make labour longer/more difficult.

JulesJules · 16/01/2009 13:49

My Great Grandmother had two babies each weighing well over 11 pounds, eek. Thank goodness I didn't inherit big baby genes, both my dds were 7lb 14oz...

merryberry · 16/01/2009 18:51

interesting coincidence weegle, mine triggered RA, quite an aggressive RA...

dreamydowler · 16/01/2009 23:09

Im on my 8th and certainly agree that it doesnt necessarily follow that each will be bigger. My first was 7 1/2lb second was 6lb 15oz the third was 7lb 2 the fourth and first ds was 7lb 4oz the fifth and second ds was 8lb the 6th another daughter was 9lb 1oz the 7th another girl was 8lb 12oz
Any guesses for this one??? my total admiration for those of you who have had huge babies

Weegle · 17/01/2009 10:54

merryberry you're the only other person I've heard who's had their condition triggered by pregnancy... the consultants are constantly saying pregnancy usually triggers remission! That's their stock answer when I say I'm terrified of another pregnancy! I have ankylosing spondylitis, so a lot in common with RA. How are you now? How old is your child? Have you had subsequent pregnancies? DS is 2.7 and only now after aggressive treatment am I just about coping. I've come off everything except morphine in an attempt to try for number 2 but I've stopped ovulating - they don't know if that's because of the drugs I was on or because of the shock my body has been in with the disease... really want another child but so worried about what my body will do even if I succeed in getting pregnant. Would be interested to hear your story...
