I have read about folk eating the placenta after the birth - did anyone actually do it?
I tasted my breast milk!

I know a butchers quite near to the local hospital who sells fresh placenta if you are interested! You can get a bargain if twins have just been born!

I was just thinking about that, wouldn't it be nice to disguise it in a homemade steak and kidney pie, especially for the lovely mil! I might pluck up courage and ask the midwife for it the next time round!

Chiccadum · 01/03/2003 13:36

Eugh! I was just going to have my dinner, I don't think I'll bother now.

SoupDragon · 01/03/2003 13:37

How about taking it on to Ready Steady Cook?

i am so sad, i just done a search for placenta recipies (god i am hungry now), here is a link to a great one, Roast Placenta, DH has just asked what I am doing for lunch .... if you are interested www.mothers35plus.co.uk/plac_rec.htm

concorde · 01/03/2003 13:48

Jeez, I also saw a link on that site for placenta pictures, I am not that daring, well half of me is, but i think this would be a bit much for me, if any of you are that daring and want to take a peek let me know what you think!

SoupDragon · 01/03/2003 13:50

Is it really so different from eating, say, liver? Well, apart from it coming froma human I guess. Bleagh!

SoupDragon · 01/03/2003 13:57

I took a deep breath and clicked on the picture link and.... I couldn't get the page to load! Phew. Has anyone looked at the "what to do with the placenta" link? It suggests making a placenta print

And, I can hardly bring myself to thing about this, Placenta Cocktail which calls for raw placenta! Placenta lasagne, placenta pizza...

No, I just couldn't do that... burying it under a special tree I think I could handle.

katierocket · 01/03/2003 17:08

no, no, no, no. If you're willing to eat one part of yourself then what next....?

Eulalia · 01/03/2003 18:08

I did look at the placenta both times and found it quite fascinating but a bit yukky. With ds the cord was a bit thin and with dd the placenta was a bit pale (she was 15 days late). I think I draw the line at eating it though. I thought that some of the cord is kept for stem cells or am I wrong ...?

Antonia3 · 01/03/2003 21:02

I looked at mine - and was also quite fascinated to see it. Am normally squeamish but found it oddly non-vile. Would draw line at eating it though. Incidentally, once had to help bury a horse's placenta in field - was huge and VERY difficult to force into hole we'd dug. Mmmmm!!

Moomin · 01/03/2003 21:06

This is such a GROSS thread. It's like something out of the League of Gentlemen...

anais · 01/03/2003 21:06

Carla · 01/03/2003 22:05

anais · 01/03/2003 22:13

Word of advice to anyone who reads this message before scrolling down to the bottom. Don't read it if you morning sickness is even half as bad as mine.

concorde · 01/03/2003 22:21

Pie, sorry to have set your morning sickness off, just an idea though, why don't you get your placenta freeze dried and we can all come round to yours and cook you dinner when your newborn arrives!

pie · 01/03/2003 22:23

LOL

If I get that far without actually bringing up my actual stomach then maybe you'll be on.

EmmaTMG · 02/03/2003 06:58

Although I couldn't do it, I knew a vegan/veggie friend from the days when I used to work and she thought it a wonderful idea as no animal had been killed or made to suffer to produce anything for it so she was quite willing to eat it. She didn't have children so maybe she might have changed her mind once she'd been through labour and 'suffered' for her dinner!!!
Love your Ready Steady Cook comment soupdragon

scoobysnax · 02/03/2003 09:32

I can't believe I started this thread sober! Noone has confessed to eating one so far. I think I could theoretically taste one of my own (safe for me to say as I'm not planning more children)if I could find a nice recipe but the thought of eating someone else's is a bit too much for me.
Did anyone else try their breast milk?

Snoobysnax - Out of curiousity I had some squirt onto my hand which I licked and found it quite pleasant! I couldn't drink it once it was put into a container though. I think by then it falls into the category of not belonging to me anymore.

Eulalia · 02/03/2003 10:47

sorry I mean scoobysnax!
