If you had a c-section did you sign a consent form?

And did a copy make it into your notes (if you've seen them)?

It occurred to me the other day that I have absolutely no recollection of signing a consent form when dd was born, and dh doesn't remember either- and there's no record of it in my notes. I remember giving verbal consent, and I wasn't particularly out of it, though I was pretty tired. I'm not concerned - it was definitely informed consent and I wasn't pressured - but just curious as to whether or not I've forgotten or it didn't happen.

It would be in your main hospital notes not your hand held notes if these were the notes you were talking about.

Buckets · 06/10/2008 17:08

Couldn't hold a pen due to contractions - luckily the baby made a surprise appearance on the operating table by more natural means!

bluebump · 06/10/2008 17:26

I actually can't remember as it was an emergency one and it had been a long few days! I do remember them saying they forgot to get me to sign something and did I give my verbal consent but whether that was for the c section or my previous epidural i've no idea.

Samantha28 · 06/10/2008 17:29

yes

I don't know if its in my notes as I haven't seen them

Pinkyminkee · 06/10/2008 17:29

yes I did sign consent forms on both occaisons and they are in my full notes.

AtheneNoctua · 06/10/2008 18:10

I had a crash section and they still found time to shove a form under my nose to sign. I think the only time they wouldn't is if you were unable to communicate (i.e. unconcious). Although, given all the drugs that were pumped into my body and the fact that I didn't have time to read the bloomin' thing I do wonder how legally binding it is.

Pinkyminkee · 06/10/2008 19:05

lol my signature is barely legible for my emcs!

pipsy76 · 06/10/2008 19:09

cant remember signing anything, I only realised I was about to have a csection when they asked my mum to start removing my jewelery!

bikerunski · 06/10/2008 19:42

I signed a consent form but it was not an informed decision. DS was diagnosed as footling breech by a scan after 6 hours of "abnormal" labour. Until then there had been no suggestion that he was breech, let alone footling, then suddenly huge urgency to get ds out. Very unprepared for this situation, and no time to think, so consent was really a box ticking exercise.

Hsvn't seen my notes.

deanychip · 06/10/2008 19:45

i was off my tits but dh says that i signed something.
has a general anaesthetic for cs when all went tits up.
never seen my notes.

unfitmother · 06/10/2008 19:48

Yes and can't remember

Hulababy · 06/10/2008 20:03

Probably, can't really remember. Was very sleep deprived, had had drugs by then, was in pain and was desperate for DD t be born. I can't remember signing anything but I assume I must have done.

No idea if it is in my notes, not seen.

mytetherisending · 06/10/2008 20:29

Lib76 LOL at just get on with it I'm a nurse, I was the same. Dr explaining the risks of surgery to which I say ' Infection to the wound, post op bleeding etc etc, I know I'm a scrub nurse! Lets just sign!(with dd1).

OldieButGoldie · 06/10/2008 21:18

I had an elective but did not sign a consent form. Only had one days notice of this turn of events so had not had a pre op before going in. Midwife kept saying 'must get you to sign consent form, must get you to sign consent form ...' every time she passed but in the end I never did.

geisha · 06/10/2008 21:26

yes for both, one emergency, one elective.

queenofpuddings · 06/10/2008 21:42

yes, they got me to sign one just before they put me out for a section under a general anaesthethic

MummyAnnabella · 06/10/2008 22:22

yes signed as being prepped for emerg c/s but not in hospital notes which i have. they explained quickly risks as i signed and i clearly remember saying - just so you know i am not consenting to a hysterectomy unless i will absolutely die without it. was ist baby and i knew i wanted more. Can you tell i am a lawyer??!!

CountessDracula · 06/10/2008 22:28

yes

notcitrus · 06/10/2008 22:45

signed a form agreeing to a cs if necessary so they could crack on if the ventouse in theatre didn't work. It included bits on episiotomy, injection to expel placenta, risks of epidural and about a dozen other tick boxes.

FrockHorror · 06/10/2008 22:48

I didn't have a CS but I did have to sign a consent form which basically said if they couldn't perform the forceps delivery in one attempt, they would have to do a CS (was in labour for 25 hours, 2nd baby, completely knackered).

Don't know whether a copy made it to my notes because I never saw them after the birth.

newgirl · 07/10/2008 10:23

yes for the planned one

no for the emergency

bikerunski · 07/10/2008 12:24

So mummyannabella, would a consent form signed after 35 hours awake, it the 90s gap between contractions and whilst reeling from idea of em cs rather than water birth actually be legally binding, if say I decided to sue hospital later (not that I am, this is purely out of theoretical interest?)

Surely it would have been better to ask dh, he was far more with it than me. Can next of kin sign consent for adults?

MummyAnnabella · 07/10/2008 13:38

bike - am not med neg expert but i would say it was binding and that while you are conscious they should ask you not dh. what do you want them to do - let you have a little sleep so you can make a decision? stop your contractions for a bit? what theoretically would you be suing for?

bronze · 07/10/2008 13:41

I signed. It was one of the only things I do remember pre being put under.

jollydo · 07/10/2008 22:34

I could not hold the pen, it kept falling out of my hands as they were shaking so much. I did read the form (held for me) and dp signed. Don't know if it's in my notes.
