What noises did you make in labour?

I have been to the labour ward a few times lately, and have heard women screaming. Out of control, and in alot of pain, by the sound of it.

What noises did you make during labour?

I tend to moo once the baby is out for some reason!

I was extremely quiet during the homebirth bit but after I transferred and felt I'd lost control (they were terrible, didn't talk to me only about me, asked dh questions about 'the patient' etc) I was extremely vocal. It went a bit like this:

"I can hear you, you know. That curtain is made out of flimsy ill-patterned fabric and your snide little comments are cutting right through it. It's not brick you know. It's not a barrier between us. I'm labouring, I'm not deaf. And yes I did hear you say I seem a bit fractious well excuse me I've been pushing for 6 hours and this baby is still inside me and you think the way to help me with this is to hide behind your curtain and mutter about how I seem uncooperative. Well since you decided to examine me mid-contraction with your freezing hands, yes I was a bit uncooperative and no I don't usually tell medical professionals to fuck off and I apologise for that but I feel like I'm being ignored here..." and on and on ad nauseum. The registrar with the freezing hands and the midwife appeared from behind the curtain and stared at me for a long time.

At least that's what I thought I said. DH said I snarled rather a lot and there were more swear words and subsequent apologies for them and a lot of gesticulation.

I'm quite ashamed.

showofhands that is just superb. I am impressed with you. Well done

I know with dd I had a hidious time not helped by 5 students walking in with a dr who was explaining something or other. My dh told them to F off in no uncertain terms as they didnt have our permission to be there

I howled like a werewolf for a couple of hours and shouted No,no,no,no,no!!!!!

I think they probably found me a bit scary as there was a 98% epidural rate in that hospital and so it was normally quite quiet!

jocesar · 19/07/2008 15:52

I had an amazing waterbirth experience 2 weeks ago. no interventions and no pain meds- all happened very quickly. I was silent for the 1st stage just concentrating on the contractions. got an overwhelming urge to push in the 2nd stage and made very primal roars- not noise I've ever made before but now i think it was an amazin noise! when the contractions were fading I chanted ' oh my goodness' over and over again. not a phrase I ever use in normal life- I think I ws being polite because the midwife was present or maybe I didn't want the baby born into my foul language!

the next day in the ward I heard another lady deliver her baby and she was making the same nois that I did which was reassuring!

with DS1 I cant really remember because i was so out of it on pethidine, although i was told by my DH that i was shouting into the gas and air tube close to the 2nd stage, But on DS2 who i had at home 10wks ago i just made some noises when i pushed - (only 6 mins) - that just sounded like the straining type of noise you'd make if you were lifting a suitcase that was too heavy! I wasn't out of control on either of them, even though i can't remember much of the first, i knew exactly what i was doing at the time. And the second was so easy it was unbelievable!

wb · 19/07/2008 16:21

Whilst pushing ds2 out I made some kind of bellowing trumpeting sound - think enraged elephant. Remember thinking - now that's how you do it (I've always had difficulty making realistic elephant sounds when playing zoos with ds1).

Mind you, ds2 was huge ....

amitymama · 19/07/2008 19:12

Grunting and a few moo-ish bellows but no screaming and (very surprisingly) no swearing. DH still finds it amusing that I was quite controlled during labour but was effing and blinding like a sailor during the first few weeks of breastfeeding.

Litterbug · 19/07/2008 19:15

Non!

until DS1 crowned and i SCREAMEDDDD!

Silent with DS2 aswell, until delivery when i made a bit of noise, not much though.

jocesar · 19/07/2008 21:28

Aminity- agree, I've never sworn so much as during breast feeding. please tell me it gets better. I don't want DS first word to be 'f*' !

southeastastra · 19/07/2008 21:30

noises i have never made before or since, totally animal

elmoandella · 19/07/2008 21:46

how did you remember. i was too bust thinking of ways to chop of dh penis to register what noise i was making

littlelamb · 19/07/2008 21:51

I'm in the grunting contingent As soon as I was in transition I started to grunt very loudly and uncontrollably and the midwife said 'that's a wonderful noise, keep at it' I really couldn't help it, and I do think it made things easier in a way- second stage was only 8 minutes, and inbetween grunts I was quiet as a mouse trying to keep my concentration. Up until transition I was very quiet too, I think the main noise I made was very confused 'what? what?? What???????' noises when I was told to expect pressure- I couldn't believe it had happened so quickly!

spaghettiarms · 19/07/2008 21:52

deep grunty mooing..
and a couple of shouty swear words

robinredbreastmummy · 19/07/2008 22:11

none i had a silent labour

chandellina · 19/07/2008 22:48

why screaming - does it feel good to scream? i think of screaming as something to do with fear, not pain.
i'm scared now!
