i did hear some french gynacologist say that some women with very toned physiques appeared to feel more pain than others

i have friends whose experience of the pain of labour is soooooo far from my own

My MIL says her 3 labours weren't that painful and she could not see what the fuss was all about BUT I don't think she sweats either

sfxmum · 25/06/2008 17:46

meant to say that for me the first 24hrs weren't unbearable but the lack of sleep made things very difficult, I had an epidural then sometime later when I was fully dilated the thing wore off and the pain was astonishing I remember biting dh very hard on the shoulder

GreenGodess · 25/06/2008 18:23

My labours have both been painless I have the sensation of contractions but would not describe them as painful acompanied by slight backache but nothing a couple of paracetemol could not handle!

mad4mybaby · 25/06/2008 18:29

Blimey! My labour lasted only 4 hours with ds but from the second it started to the second it finished i hard contraction after contraction and was in so much pain. I kept saying 'im going to die' mind you only had gas and air but thats just coz i was 8-9cm as got to hosp!

Of course this one will pop out with barely a sneeze

hunkermunker · 25/06/2008 18:30

Pruners, was it you who posted re "orgasmic birth" - asking if anyone had had one?

maretta · 25/06/2008 18:35

I've had three, all very quick w/o pain releif, and wouldn't ever describe labour as painful. It's a different sensation, just intense.

I have an Ena May Gaskin book that says there are women in all cultures who don't feel pain in labour and that it's actually reasonably common.

My friend did - mild backache (after being induced) and 3 painfree pushes - I'm just a little jealous

That would be a no.

My mother allegedly had very easy labours. She brought us up to believe that labour didn't hurt. This is one of many reasons why you should never, ever listen to your mum.

Yes, remember that thread [whimper]

TigerFeet · 25/06/2008 19:40

Someone I know had no pain at all during labour until the baby got stuck and ended up beind delivered by em c/s. He was 11lb + . Me however, I wept, I wailed, I did swearing and mooing like a cow at top volume - it fucking hurt

neolara · 25/06/2008 19:47

My DD arrived in 4 1/2 hours from first twinge, which makes me think that I probably didn't feel very much during the early stages. It bloody well hurt in the last 2 hours though. My DS's birth was also pretty quick, but the pain was very manageable. Not painless, but definitely fine. I used gas and air for the last 40 mins only. I think I was telling the midwife 20 mins post birth that I would definitely do that again.

juuule · 25/06/2008 19:58

No.

MKG · 25/06/2008 20:04

I wouldn't call it painless, but it wasn't painful, more annoying than anything.
