Going home clothes for mum

Just want to reiterate this is NOT for photos but I just wanted to ask where you all get your maternity clothes from.

Ive seen some lovely cosy looking outfits suitable for outdoors and heading home from hospital but whenever I order them they’re really bad quality or transparent.

I felt so uncomfortable on my way home with first child, I had bled through, knickers didn’t fit, didn’t have a change of clothes so I’m determined to feel comfy after birth and on my way home.

so mumsnet please help me. Where do you buy your best comfy maternity clothes from ?

The leggings from H&M and Lindex were good. Something soft around the waist in case you end up having a section. Pants that came up high as you want them to be secure as you’ll be likely to be wearing a large pad. If the weather is warmer a loose cotton dress (I had a baggy one that wasn’t maternity). The maternity clothes I already had were fine, I don’t buy anything new for after the baby as I hoped I wouldn’t be in them for long. What do you feel most comfortable in now, I’d just wear that for going home in? Double vest tops or vest and shirt were good for feeding (I just bought regular non-maternity ones).

How far away is the hospital? Ours was under 10mins so I probably could have just got away with coming home in my nightie with a coat over the top!!

Loose wide legs trousers with drawstring waist - available everywhere currently!

Nursing vests I can wear under normal tops / shirts. H&M do perfectly good ones.

I quite like then wearing loose shirts on top (easy access for breastfeeding).

fruitbrewhaha · 19/01/2026 08:52

Tracksuit bottoms would be my choice. Large and snuggly.

Then plenty of tops you can feed in. Cardigans. Shirts. T shirts with buttons.

Vertbaudet make some lovely clothes. French. I bought most of mine from there.

This is why mumsnet can be so useful ! this sort of thing is exactly what I’ve been after.

hospital is about 20 mins on a good run. I just remember feeling so grubby!

That ensemble is lovely, it will be so useful for lounging, feeding, resting in, as well as smart enough for when the visitors descend..plus dark is good postpartum in case of any bleeding through.. won’t stain or be obvious (eg if feeding for a while and unable to go and freshen up). I’d probably order a couple of those when you break it down to cost per wear x

familyissues12345 · 19/01/2026 09:10

It’s been a while for me (“baby” is 17!), but I remember coming home in some thin joggers, a BF vest from H&M and an open shirt

DaveWatts · 19/01/2026 09:13

Vertbaudet is a good shout, I have some of their breastfeeding vests and still wearing them now baby is 14 months!

bitterexwife · 19/01/2026 09:16

I used to really like the top shop over the bump jeans. The H&M ones also good.

princesseauxchampignons · 19/01/2026 09:39

Thank you all. Really good suggestions !

Baby 2 I went home in my PJs. I was going to get into them went i got home. So though F it, I'm not getting changed again.

Floofle · 19/01/2026 12:37

Can't remember with my first, but with my second I was wearing maternity leggings, nursing cami from H&M, and long cardigans!

thestepmumspacepodcast · 19/01/2026 14:00

TK Maxx do some gorgeous black quality wide leg drawstrings which are lovely for lounging in but also feel nice enough to be out and about in.
(I don't have a newborn! I just work at home a lot and like comfy clothes!)

UniversityofWarwick · 19/01/2026 14:47

Wrt undies, a tip I got from here was to use Tena pants. I used cheap pads with them and anything that missed the pads was caught by the pants.

Clothes wise it was thin joggers and a maternity top.

onceagainforrose · 19/01/2026 14:49

I think I had yoga pants from sainsburys, not maternity but with a lovely wide elastic “belt” that was very similar to the elastic in over the bump trousers.

lambethwalk25 · 19/01/2026 14:54

https://lovall.com/ for comfy good quality post baby leggings

Frida Mom postpartum knickers - absolutely the best ever

MooMoo74 · 19/01/2026 15:13

In all honesty I went home in a black pair of SHEIN pjs in my last pregnancy. I’ll probably do the same again. Having a c section in 5 weeks so want comfort anyway and definitely wouldn’t be wearing leggings

This exact outfit was my go to in the early weeks post partum! That and wrap dresses but it’s a bit cold for that yet.

mondaytosunday · 19/01/2026 15:19

I didn’t buy any maternity clothes, just roomier tops and elasticated waistbands on jersey trousers so they’d last over a few months. And that’s what I went home in too! And my bubba was over 10lbs…

Meadowfinch · 19/01/2026 15:21

Agreed OP, I hated most of the maternity clothes I saw. Very poor quality.

I went home in my only pair of maternity jeans and a cotton man's shirt with tails. It was August and very warm. And flat sandals.

wishingonastar101 · 19/01/2026 15:26

I didn't want maternity clothes - I just wore PJs in the car back from the hospital. I live in long cardigans so wore those.

You won't want mat clothes for long... no point buying a new wardrobe.

Band3benefits · 19/01/2026 15:30

I’m still wearing mine now tbh! Baby is 3m old

granted I’m also in for an operation today on my gallbladder but I didn’t hesitate to pick up “the set” which id bought after my first baby 4 years ago. It was a Mrs Hinch light grey lounge wear set from Tesco, 3 piece set (stretchy joggers, stretchy vest and a long cardigan) and soooooo soft! They might have similar in store at the moment (can’t find a link for mine sorry!)

failing that, seraphine do a lovely set, a bit pricier but lovely as a treat.

  • Seraphine Grey Marl Ultra-Soft Maternity & Nursing Loungewear Set

mine is the same material and it must be doing well for 4 years old and multiple hospital stays! Made me feel so fresh.

try Tesco.

congratulations xxx

Band3benefits · 19/01/2026 15:32

Oh and to add to my comment sorry

mibe was just a standard fit not maternity. I’m usually a 6-8 so got an 8-10 or a small, as they are stretchy.

I have days where I just pop them on- the long cardigan is great to wrap around baby when holding her too, a bit like a blanket x

Babyboomtastic · 19/01/2026 15:39

Dresses with slip on flats/low heels, both times. It was spring/summer though. Looking back at that first week or so both times, or seemed to be my uniform. I was out a lot though, so PJ's would have been a bit weird.

princesseauxchampignons · 19/01/2026 15:40

Thanks all. Some really practical suggestions and also some cosy outfits for when visitors come and I don’t want to be in jeans !
