Going home clothes for mum

Just want to reiterate this is NOT for photos but I just wanted to ask where you all get your maternity clothes from.

Ive seen some lovely cosy looking outfits suitable for outdoors and heading home from hospital but whenever I order them they’re really bad quality or transparent.

I felt so uncomfortable on my way home with first child, I had bled through, knickers didn’t fit, didn’t have a change of clothes so I’m determined to feel comfy after birth and on my way home.

so mumsnet please help me. Where do you buy your best comfy maternity clothes from ?

These pyjamas are great - get in black and a jumper over it and it looks fine. Super good for lying about the house breastfeeding and they were very soft on cesearean wound www.next.co.uk/style/su551809/ay1388

Can't remember with my first, but with my second I was wearing maternity leggings, nursing cami from H&M, and long cardigans!

Fairly certain I lived in leggings vest and cardi combos for the first month or so. Handy for feeding!

And v neck wrap dresses (also good for feeding) if i was feeling fancy - not on the way home from hospital 🤣

I just wore maternity jeans both times, the super absorbent incontinence pads are good

Jrisix · 19/01/2026 16:45

My MIL got me a beautiful set but it was viscose and once it got breastmilk stains on it I just couldn't get them washed out for some reason.

I had two C sections and mostly lived in high waisted leggings for the first few weeks, anything else felt like there wasn't enough support around my abdomen.

QuickPeachPoet · 19/01/2026 16:46

Child 1 - it was summer and boiling hot so I wore a loose dress.
Child 2 - Trousers and one of my maternity tops.

I loath leggings and don't own a hoodie so I didn't get your average 'uniform'.
Just wear what you want

AWellReadWoman · 19/01/2026 17:08

I had two of these sets when I had mine and can really recommend them.

cheapskatemum · 19/01/2026 17:39

I just wanted to post & reassure you that you can’t possibly look or feel worse than I did when I foolishly let DH bring me an outfit to return home from hospital in after giving birth:
navy & white dress
thick black tights
white sandals
I’m blushing now! Plus the fact that I can remember this, when it happened 30+ years ago. I got some sympathetic looks from the nursing staff, I guess they’ve seen it all before!

growingpickle · 19/01/2026 19:39

I bought a new matching tracksuit set from primark for each “going home outfit”. A blue set when I had my boy, and a pink set for having my girl. Just basic trackies but brand new, several sizes larger than I’d normally wear so they were plenty big enough on my remaining bump, super comfy and cheap!

actually the second time I left hospital 5 hours after giving birth, at 1am, in my PJs! But I wore my new trackies the following day!

I think that Vertbaudet outfit is great and if you have nice shoes and are reasonably well groomed (i.e. you've brushed your hair and are baby-sick free!), you'll look great and feel comfortable too.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 19/01/2026 21:24

Going home outfit I find really odd concept. It's clothes that probably won't fit you a week later and no one will see. It's hospital room to car, car to house. You're not doing the front step of the Lindo wing and a press conference.

I left hospital at 5am so wore pregnancy sweats.

CAMHShelp · 19/01/2026 22:08

Black maternity leggings and long floaty maternity top, towel on the car seat!

Bemused89 · 19/01/2026 22:54

JoJo mamen baby, Juno jacks, seraphine. Half assed it with my first. Knew better by my second.

Mammabex · 20/01/2026 00:51

This was my most favourite and comfortable maternity outfit and I also used it to come home. Pair it with comfy big knickers and trainers.

Does anyone have any advice as to whether vertbaudet are long? I love the sets but I'm a short arse at 5"2 and I have a trailing problem 😂.

Re: lovall. A load of friends recommended their maternity leggings but feedback is (from trust pilot and friends) that the quality has declined
They also charge a refund fee so I lost a fiver! Wasn't too happy about that when I'd forked out £50 for one pair of leggings!

LovingFawn · 20/01/2026 10:37

Currently 9.5mo pregnant and found exactly the same challenges! Seraphine was my go-to in my last pregnancy so it has taken a bit of searching.

My favourite maternity purchases have been leggings from Lovall, Jumpsuits from Beyond Nine (even though I’m really not usually a jumpsuit kind of person!), two dresses from ‘Ripe’ and cosy combo sets from Hush’s Supersoft range (not cheap and not technically maternity, but I’ll wear after too). I’ve also had some great H&M cotton basics.

Hope you find some bits you love!

There’s always one. If you read my OP, you’ll understand why I’m asking this.

I will shock horror, wear what I want. What I am saying is that with my first I was incredibly uncomfortable and I can still remember the feeling all these years on. I’m trying to avoid feeling like that again.

The recommendations have recieved is both for pre and post baby. I’m not asking for your permission or approval of a concept, nor whether I should buy something new. I’m asking for recommendation on maternity clothes that aren’t awful quality !

Good shout on the towel !!! Think I may just put one in there now so I don’t forget. Thanks!

Wish you lots of luck for your upcoming birth ! Thank you - I’ve also found it so much worse this time round with clothes. Problem is no shops stock it anymore so you have to rely on the internet

Really doesn’t make it easy, does it? Much more faff having to order multiple sizes and styles and handle returns! My c section is actually tomorrow… thus why I’m on mumsnet distracting myself 😂

We can definitely distract away !!

It’s such a strange feeling isn’t it. I haven’t particularly enjoyed pregnancy, I know some women love it but I’ve struggled both times now. But I think because this baby likely going to be my last, I have felt a bit strange about never doing it again !

Thanks all. Some really practical suggestions and also some cosy outfits for when visitors come and I don’t want to be in jeans !

I loved my maternity jeans!

Nat6999 · 29/01/2026 05:13

I went home in what I arrived in, velour wide leg joggers, long sleeved cotton top & velour hoodie, I discharged myself at 3.00pm but had to wait until 5.00pm for meds & discharge letter, it was this week 22 years ago, pitch black so nobody saw me arrive home. I was so glad to be going home I couldn't have cared if I was wearing a bin bag.
