Had dd on Thursday at about 11pm. Home a few hours later. The afterpains are a NIGHTMARE. The midwife said they'd feel a bit like period pains but they're full on late labour contractions only minus the TENs/gas and air.

Please tell me they stop soon?

(this is 3rd child, these are way worse than previously)

you are allowed cocodamol even if BF-ing, ask your MW to get you some.

i have recently had dc3 and they were so much worse.

tassisssss · 07/06/2008 11:31

thanks

when did they stop?

Taking paracetamol and ibuprofen REGULARLY can help and bath that isn't too warm. Better to take them regularly that just take something when the pain is there. They usually pass after a couple of days.

Co-codamol is best not to be taken on the long term, especially if breastfeeding, It is a much more constipating drug too.

Paracetamol 2 tabs 4 times a day and brufen 2 tabs 3 times a day will help.

scorpio1 · 07/06/2008 11:34

about 3 days and they went.

My GP prescribed me cocodamol and said it was fine, but also what Mears says will be enough, the 2 combined.

make sure you are resting.

VictorianSqualor · 07/06/2008 11:36

tassisssssss, I had the same, worse when feeding as well.
I had to hand MiL the baby and get out of bed to walk around!
Mine stopped around day 4/5.

tassisssss · 07/06/2008 11:42

yeah that's the thing, i need to move around (as in labour) but they inevitably happen when I'm sat with my feet up feeding.

scorpio, resting's not my specialism but i'm working on it (though itching to go out for lunch with just dh and baby as mum's taken ds and dd out).

thanks mears i'll stock up on meds, i hadn't remembered if ibuprofen was ok when BFing.

Yep, they happen then because the feeding makes your uterus(?) contract back to it's normal size.

maidamess · 07/06/2008 11:50

tass, mine were 1000 times worse with no. 3 than with the other two. I think its your womb finally giving up the ghost.

BlueDragonfly · 07/06/2008 11:51

thats what i was like after ds3 too tassisssss. Thje good news is that they don't last for much longer. what helped was to time painkillers so they kicked in just before a feed.

I used to have 1 co codamol every 2 hours so i was 'topped up' in the first week or so.

deep breathing helps

VictorianSqualor · 07/06/2008 11:52

lol maidamess, I really don't remember having them with my first two, but my third, ARGGGGGGGGGGGH.

Is that what labour feels like?
(I had sections every time)

BlueDragonfly · 07/06/2008 11:53

ibuprofen is fine i was told but i can't have it because i am asthmatic and it affects my asthma (doesn't affect everyones)

scorpio1 · 07/06/2008 11:54

VS - like that but much more intense.

BlueDragonfly · 07/06/2008 11:55

VS, yup my afterpains were described to my midwife as a 7 cm kind of pain. late labour is that continuously

VictorianSqualor · 07/06/2008 11:56

Wow, I want a go!!!

scorpio1 · 07/06/2008 11:58

you nutter.

tassisssss · 07/06/2008 11:59

the difference is that in labour you can have gas and air which is wonderful stuff!!

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 07/06/2008 11:59

yes gas and air verrrry good, like being very drunk IME.

hairycaterpillar · 07/06/2008 19:11

oh poor you MUCH sympathy, I barely had afterpains with DS1 and only a little with DD but oh yeah you are bringing it all back...DS2 the pains were HORRIBLE. It does gradually get less and less but i think it was pretty grim for about 5-7 days. I think I took pcm and diclofenac and that helped a bit.

Hope you're doing grand otherwise can't wait to meet the gorgeous girl!

ChippyMinton · 07/06/2008 19:18

another vote for co-codamol. My third was the worst too, well not as bad as recovering from an emrgency c-section first time round, but unexpected.

I'm due today with #3 and was wondering about the afterpains. I'm allergic to paracetemol, so I hope they'll let me have something else in hospital, I'll be in for about 4/5 days so I hope they've gone by the time I get home.

Congratulations Tassiss

expatinscotland · 07/06/2008 21:50

i was given both paracetamol and ibu in hospital and was bfing.

largeginandtonic · 07/06/2008 21:55

Oh god i feel for you, they are awful! I dreded the after pains more than having the baby and i kept on the G&A for a while after i had dc#5, i wanted the midwife to leave it for me! I even asked her to have a look as i was convinced there was another baby in there!

I am a leeelte bit scared about dc#7!!

Keep taking the cocodamol and anything else the midwife gives you. Hot water bottles were great too. Full sympathy!

I got voltarol for mine. They were so bad after dc2 I was screaming! Fortunately dc3 & 4 they weren't as bad so hardly took any but they were much better than paracetamol etc
