Had a sweep at 12.00 today and it wasn't painful at all just a mild bit of discomfort MW said that the cervix was nice and soft and that i am 1cm dilated but that it was still facing slightly back.

I have had some period pain since but no show other than a tiny bit of blood straight after the sweep.

I'm 40+3 and just wonderd how successful sweeps usually are?
and how soon you are likely to go into labour IF its actually worked!!

I already have a dd but didn't have a sweep with her so this is my first experience of one.

ANY advice or peoples experiences would be greatly received!!

Many thanks in advance x

generally a sweep will work within 48hrs if its going to

try and keep mobile, bounce on abirth ball, go for a walk etc, allthe usual things to get labour going, sex after a sweep is meant to ge good

good luck and sending labour vibes xxxx

I had a sweep at 40 +2 weeks. My waters started to leak but not break 24 hours later and I went into labour 72 hours after the sweep.

mumoftwo37 · 26/05/2008 14:33

I had the sweep about 3pm and DS2 was born at 12.20pm next day - first contraction at 12.00. I felt "wrong" from about 8am that morning and went to hospital to be checked out as it was Christmas Eve. We arrived at 12.00 just as the contractions started and Ds was born 20mins later in a big gush of water.

sweetbean · 26/05/2008 14:42

I had a sweep at 40 + 13 days with DS1. I had it at 3pm and DS1 was bron at 7.43 next morning. I think if you are already dilated - it just helps things along. Good luck. Period pain sounds about right might develop into labour very soon.

wb · 26/05/2008 20:14

With ds2 I had a sweep at 41+1

Midwife said I was already 3cm dilated. After sweep had a show, more the next day and 48hrs later ds2 was born.

Can't be sure that it was the sweep that got things gooing but I think it did help.

biscuitsmustbedunkedintea · 26/05/2008 20:22

I had a sweep at 40+4. Had very strong pains about 3 hours later (stronger than my atcual contractions it turns out!) which wore off by an hour later. Didn't go into labour until 31hrs after sweep, but still believe it helped

mellyonion · 26/05/2008 20:25

i had 4 sweeps.....eventually gave birth at 40+16..... not really sure if they worked or not.
at your stage of pg, baby can't stay in for much longer!

good luck...hope yours works for you!

detoxdiva · 26/05/2008 20:32

I had a sweep when I was 41 weeks - went into labour 5 hrs later & dd was born the next morning

ja9 · 26/05/2008 21:24

sweetbean, i woke at 4am and jumped out of bed with a very sore contraction. by 4:30am i was sure it was happening. dd born 5:54am.

had previously been up to the toilet at 1:30am and felt nothing...

sweetbean · 27/05/2008 08:09

Thanks for all the posts!!

NOTHING is happening so apart from more pressure below when i walk. So im feeling a bit sorry for myself! I went 40+10 with my DD and just really wanted to avoid that this time!! but i suppose baby will just arrive when ready.

its not stupid....i think by the time you've done 40 weeks and more, you get thinking it'll ever end...plus you have those stupid phonecall....the have you had it yet ones....

go and spend your day loitering in marks and spencers...rumour has it they reward you with gifts if you begin labour in one of their stores!

sweetbean · 27/05/2008 12:19

Ooooh Mellyonion top tip thank you!!!!! and as you said it will get me way from all thoughts people who just can't mind there own business until i call them to say ive had it!!! Thanks xx

Hallo sweetbean! I was on the due May 08 thread with you... I had a sweep when I was 40+6. I'd already been having pre-labour symptoms (you might remember me moaning on about them on the thread) including 'practice' contractions so a bit different from you but anyway - I felt a bit sore and tired after the sweep. went and walked round town with my Mum all afternoon. The following day I started having contractions in the afternoon, but they were very weak; they got a bit stronger in the evening, but tailed off again when I went to bed. The next morning as soon as I got up they were 3 mins apart, but came and went all day and DS2 eventually arrived at 7:19 that evening. So I suppose my point is that the sweep did get things going for me, but not in the dramatic way it did for some of the other posters - so even if you are not feeling much yet, it may still be that it is doing its job. Good luck hun and see you on the postnatal thread soon! x x x

sweetbean · 28/05/2008 09:13

Asicsgirl Hi Hun well i had a large show this morning so fingers crossed that something might be happening. Still have no pains though!! xx
