What gestation did you give birth?

Curious to know! For those of you who are 100% sure on the date of conception, what gestation did you give birth?

I’m sure on my due date, however the NHS have put me a week earlier which is obviously impossible. I imagine baby is just measuring bigger than expected. I’m sure I’ll be encouraged to induce or book a c section if baby is ‘overdue’.

When I’m ‘40 weeks’, I’ll actually be 39 weeks based off when I know we conceived.

So, did your baby come on the due date you calculated or were they early/late?!

I was 36 weeks based on NHS dates with mine (35 weeks by my dates)

CillaDog · 08/05/2025 00:16

I’m pretty certain of my conception, like 98% sure, and I gave birth at 37+5 but going by conception it would have been 35 + 4 …

Now I think about it I’m not sure how that works out so I just be counting wrong.

it’s well known they don’t like people to go overdue. They like you to start considering sweeps and inductions and so on. They’ve dated me 1 week earlier than physically possible so I personally wont even entertain the idea of a sweep and induction before ‘41 weeks’ as I’ll actually only be 40 weeks.
And no, the pregnancy isn’t high risk but I have had multiple early miscarriages.

They weren’t bothered with me, and many others on this thread.

hereismydog · 08/05/2025 01:03

40+3.

I was induced at 39+4 for medical reasons but I didn’t dilate past 2cm despite 6 days of intense contractions, so DS arrived via EMCS as he became distressed. I don’t know how long he would’ve stayed in if it had been left up to him!

Ok? I’m not sure what your point is. Every trust is different, every health professional you will come across is different. The thread was just for a a bit of fun to see when babies are really born when you’re 100% sure on your due date.

Goodness that sounds traumatic. It’s very easy to feel pressurised by them too because they are the professionals at the end of the day but it’s a know fact that they like us to choose inductions. It’s easier for them to know when babies are arriving rather than spontaneous labour! I’m glad you and your baby were okay!

I will consider induction at 41 weeks (42 weeks NHS dates) but I may change my mind closer to the time. We shall see!

It was unpleasant. But I should have mentioned that there absolutely was support: although the midwife running the induction ward was exasperated about the situation I don’t think it was entirely directed at me. There were also two midwives there who clearly agreed entirely with my decision to refuse the induction; indeed, I saw one of them when I went in to give birth and she said she had been relieved that I followed my instincts. I don’t think the pressure comes from a bad place necessarily. Consultants inevitably see the births that go wrong and the most extreme outcomes, and not so much the many, many more that proceed smoothly. Seeing even a small number of tragedies must be traumatic for doctors too, and must leave them extremely risk averse. What angered me was that neither consultant I spoke to would answer my questions about the risks associated with induction. Simply refused to discuss it. That isn’t right, in my view. Informed consent exists for a reason!

How many weeks were you according to NHS dates?

35+5!

2in2022twoyearson · 09/05/2025 10:24

First 36+5, second 40+2. My dating scans were accurate to the day or day either side. I was encouraged to book in for an induction with my second and accepted a date for 41 weeks. It was due to slow growth but me and DH are not very tall and dc2 is still small at 2. My eldest, who was early had a simular birth weight and she's taller. A french Dr scared my DH into him thinking we should induce. He was growing at every scan so I didn't agree...a different doctor didn't think early induction was nessersary.

GetDressedYouMerryGentlemen · 09/05/2025 11:08

Out of dozens of friends and family I know a grand total of 2 babies that were born on their actual due date. Dating isn't exact and at term or close to makes little odds. If a baby is very premature a few days gestation makes a big difference but past a certain point being off by a few days makes no odds.

2in2022twoyearson · 09/05/2025 11:32

It does matter to have correct facts if you are being advised a late term induction. Around the 42 week mark still births are more likely. But I agree a due date is a bit misleading. I listened to the midwives couldren when I was pregnant with my second. I think the natural average is a day or 2 over 40.

I agree. They have said they would like to induce at 41 weeks but I’ll only be 40 weeks then. I’m not high risk either they just said they don’t like people to go overdue because of the increase risk in stillborns.

This was actually a big topic in my NCT class. How many weeks are you? I did book myself in for a 41 week induction, after declining the one earlier as I had this potential risk, but they said the 41 week they offer to most people. I wasn't sure I'd follow through and then I didn't need to and you could do the same. My big reason I was reluctant as when I was in the postnatal ward with my first, who I had at 36 weeks after my waters broke prematurely, I saw loads of women who had been booked in for induction and they were there for days waiting for space in the labour ward! I was one of those to bump the queue as I needed the oxyticin drip but still had to wait overnight. Could you have one booked at 42?

Yes I’m willing to book one for 41 weeks. This is my 4th child. Never had any complications before and have never been induced.

If you’re uncomfortable with your care providers you can change them. No one should be pressuring you - advice and guidance shouldn’t feel pushy or fear inducing.

good luck mama!

Madden21 · 23/08/2025 00:38

Just thought I’d come back to update.
I had a baby boy on the exact date I thought I was due. I went into labour at 10pm the night before! He was 8lb5 so a chunk which probably explains why they thought I was a week ahead!

OP posts:
MuchTooTired · 23/08/2025 00:48

I had my DTs at 36+5, they’re ivf babies so were 34+5 from the day of egg retrieval and fertilisation, 34+1 from implantation. They weighed 6lb 6oz and 7lb 3oz.

elliejjtiny · 23/08/2025 00:50

41+4
40+6
40+2 (Ds3 is weirdly very proud that he was born almost on his due date!)
35+3
36+6

older 3 were all born on the day i was supposed to be induced. Dc4 was an elective c-section and dc5 was an attempted induction that didn't work.

no discrepancies with dates. Dating scans matched LMP within a day or so apart from dc5. But I'd been having really short cycles so i thought I'd probably ovulated earlier than 2 weeks after my period.

RoseAndGeranium · 24/08/2025 10:25

Congratulations, OP! Glad it all worked out for you.

SeptaUnellasBell · 24/08/2025 10:27

36 weeks exactly! Mine was an IVF pregnancy so very sure of workings out! He was 9lb 7oz!
