Can my husband bring me some dinner into hospital?

Random one but last c section I had the food was so bad (not being a snob but it was really not nice).

got another c section booked for December.

Would my husband be allowed to bring something in for me this time (discreetly) something like a hot wrap from Pret or something? Or would he get told off?

thanks!

A few people did that when I was in hospital having my youngest. I thought the food was nice so dh just brought snacks in for me.

Fraaahnces · 20/11/2024 10:32

I have just spent two weeks in hospital. I had Uber eats a couple of times. My DH went downstairs and picked it up out the front. I would have stabbed someone had I had to live on the same two GF, Veggie meals over and over again. (Both utterly disgusting.)

MarketValveForks · 20/11/2024 10:35

Perfectly fine to do this. But if you aren't in a private room do have some discretion in not ordering anything that will have a really powerful smell.

Itoldyousoo · 20/11/2024 10:47

Just what you want when you are poorly - the smell of a burger or a curry wafting around the ward 🙄

Singleandproud · 20/11/2024 10:50

Whenever I've been our family has been in hospital we've taken food in - respecting any medical advice ofcourse. Food flasks are useful for this.

Butterbean21 · 20/11/2024 11:05

Yes you can take food in. There are definitely worse smells in hospital! To be fair to those taking curries in the only halal option at my hospital is a microwave butter chicken and rice, I can understand why people who eat halal take food in. I actually really like the canteen food but it can be very hit or miss for people with specific dietary requirements.

I really missed brie cheese while pregnant and my DH brought me some cheese and crackers. The brie had been out the fridge for a while and was RIPE. A very kind but perhaps not well thought through plan from DH. The HCSW came through and said "oh dear I think he might have a dirty nappy" and I sat coy while she decided that it must have just been wind. Thankfully I was in a single room at that time.

She'll be on a post-natal ward surely, so it's no different to there being food smells at meal times? People have to eat!

When I was on the postnatal ward for a few days, curry was one of the meals the hospital offered on their menu. At dinner and lunchtime the ward smelled of food.

Queenofheart · 20/11/2024 11:14

OMG Yeahhhh ... when i had my first son I was in 10 days, I got fed up of the food, the hospital was on Curry Mile in Manchester, he brought me a curry in :) I did have my own room so not on a ward.

There's food smells anyway from the meals they provide on site. People have to eat even if they've had an operation. And recovering from a c section does not mean you are ill. I've done it four times. You're in pain, yes but you're not sick.

Peonyyyy · 20/11/2024 11:25

Thanks everyone!

definitely will be mindful of smells - I hate smelling other peoples food!

although hopefully this will be minimised if we order around the same time everyone else is eating?

im not fussy at all but I can’t face hospital food again when already feeling so tired and fragile.

Of course he can.
The hospital will have a variety of on site places like Costa or Pret.

Olika · 20/11/2024 11:30

Well, the lady next to mine with her husband were feasting with take away pizza in the middle of the night when the rest of us were trying to get some sleep between feedings so I suppose having food from outside was allowed at my local hospital.

Trust me many hospitals do not have chain restaurants on site - lucky to have a shop that’s open for more than a few hours a day.

Yes of course, you're not in prison! I'd just try and avoid anything very strong smelling like fish etc out of courtesy.

Although tbh nobody on a postnatal ward ever seems to care about anyone else with their loud video calls at 3am (not just my experience but practically anyone I've ever spoken to who has spent time on a postnatal ward)! So I wouldn't be too worried. Also the food they provide on the ward smells anyway so it's not like you're doing anything terrible.

Agree about worse smells. I would trade a vindaloo any day after my last experience in a shared ward. My neighbour had multiple explosive diahorrea episodes in a 24 hour period. One so bad the nurses had to cut off her PJs. It was one of the worst things I have ever smelled.

Negangirlxx · 20/11/2024 11:34

My partner picked me up food from the onsite Costa, and Cafe as the food wasn’t great at my Hospital, and I was barely eating (not great when recovering from a C Section). He would bring me hot food during the scheduled meal times, so that the smell wasn’t too bad, as there was other cooked food on the ward at the time. He would also occasionally bring me cold snacks e.g. crisps, chocolate bars, drinks etc.

mynameiscalypso · 20/11/2024 11:34

My DH brought me a bacon sandwich from Costa for breakfast the morning after DS was born and I have never loved him more than in that moment.

OMG the 3am phone calls take the piss when you’re trying to sleep! They’re always super loud too, aren’t they? No consideration at all.

We also had one woman who kept wailing through the night, and I have no idea why.

The lack of sleep on the wards is the killer.

Needmorelego · 20/11/2024 11:41

@CoastalCalm really? Every hospital I've been to (several) has them.
Anyway....I expect they'll be a Costa/Pret/Greggs/Little Tesco near the hospital so my point still stands.

DP bought me a chocolate muffin as I'd had GD and had been super strict in my diet to avoid any medication.

Elektra1 · 20/11/2024 12:21

My mum brought me meals in for 4 days after I'd had DD! Usually things which could be eaten cold, like quiche. Plus plenty of snacky bits. Absolutely get DH to do this.

Penguinsmum · 20/11/2024 12:23

My dh brought takeaway pizza in! We asked the nurse and she said it's fine as long as we take away the rubbish! It was so needed after a few days of hospital food!

It's like they've never heard of headphones! It's bad enough hearing the person on the ward speaking loudly but the awful tinny noise of the person on the other end of the video call at max volume, always with noisy kids in the background (yes even at 3am!), takes the biscuit!

Would take smelly curries or fish smells any day over that tbh!
