If your first labour was quick, was your second quick also?

My first experience with labour was that my waters broke, contractions started and baby was born all within four hours. Makes me nervous for baby no.2 (if it's on the cards) that it'll be even quicker!

OP posts:
BIWI · 29/08/2024 21:44

Yep! 4 hours first time, 2.5 hours second time.

spiderdave · 29/08/2024 21:46

6 hours first time
33 minutes second time

....3 days 3rd time though 🙄

Mum2GirlSs · 29/08/2024 21:46

Yes faster .....

Contractions started; 15 minutes later my waters went and then 11 minutes later my daughter was born

Second child
I didn't feel any contractions; waters went and 4 minutes later my daughter was born

FarmersWife2019 · 29/08/2024 22:02

Yes!
My first - From contractions to birth was 4 hours.
My second - From contractions to birth was 2 hours.

Treesnbirds · 29/08/2024 22:16

Yes! And much better because I knew roughly what to expect. 2nd baby was almost born in the car park.
Hospital notes said admitted at one time and baby born 9 minutes later 😁 (though I knew she was coming, just the midwife initially didn't believe me 🙄).

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 29/08/2024 22:26

Yes. First one waters broke after an hours labour and he was born 39minutes later almost in the car park. 2nd one I went to bed at midnight with no pain. woke up at 1am. Straight to hospital. Born at 2.50pm. 3rd one I went to bed at 1030. Woke at 1130 and heard an almighty pop and seen green. Little madam had pooped! This was the only one I comfortably walked into hospital to have. Went in at 12 not in labour. They took a sample. Wheeled me round the corner. All of a sudden... fully dilated. She was born at 1.12am.
All 3 fabulously fast which is great ad I'm not good with prolonged pain. Be prepared...and Good luck!

brimfulofpacha · 29/08/2024 22:27

Yes first was so fast dc basically shot out - I was still at home!

Second slightly faster, but I went to hospital at the very first twinge as knew what to expect. I barely got my knees wet, pool was still filling as I crowned, but was determined to get my birth pool experience Grin we were in and back home within 3 hours. It would have been more like 1.5 (including the journey!) but they couldn't find anyone to discharge me right away as I was consultant-lead.

PolaroidPrincess · 29/08/2024 22:31

Don't they reckon that the second usually takes half as long? Certainly the case for me OP Flowers

EcoCustard · 29/08/2024 22:32

Dc1 waters went in the Saturday evening but no contractions (monitored then sent home with induction booked). Contractions started early next morning, just got to hospital and delivered in assessment room after avoiding the car park and the longest 35 minute drive, Contractions to birth an hour.
Dc2 was 12 months later, contractions started quickly, got to hospital quickly as advised but they stopped. Started again a short time later, did that again then stopped, Waters were intact so midwife advised to break them manually which she expected would get baby here quickly. She broke them, contraction immediately, 2 pushes and Dc2 arrived in minutes including the on/off contractions was under 3 hours. Dc3 super quick, less than 20 minutes, Dc4 my longest at 4 hours ( but my loveliest).

PullUpTheDrawbridge · 29/08/2024 22:48

Even quicker. In hindsight I should have trusted myself to read the signs more confidently than I did. Didn't make it to hospital...

SlipperyLizard · 29/08/2024 22:51

6 hours DD1 (waters being broken to delivery) probably 90 minutes max for DD2 (asking midwife for paracetamol to delivery). If I wasn’t already in hospital for DD2 I’m not sure I’d have made it there.

olderthanyouthink · 29/08/2024 22:55

First was 17 mins of pushing. Second was about an hour but think he was just in an awkward position, third was faster but not as fast as the first. The first was a lot of faffing about so she shot out once the faffing stopped. Labours were similar lengths I guess, not much in it, I just don't seem like I'm about to pop until it's happening.

Bettalife · 29/08/2024 22:55

Yes. DC1 was nearly born in the hospital reception. DC2 was so quick I ended up having an unattended and unplanned home birth. Had a bath to see if the braxton hicks I was having would turn into something more as I was 8 days overdue. Stood up half an hour later to get out the bath and she literally dropped and started crowning. Babies 3 and 4 were planned home births (i didn’t want to risk a car birth).

Shezlong · 29/08/2024 22:57

Quick but not quicker. 1 was 2 hours, 2 was 4 hours, 3 was 2.5 hours. Had a home birth for 2 and 3. I wanted one anyway but it was also advised for speedy births as we lived about 45 mins from the hospital. Midwives arrived with about 30 mins to spare for baby 2 and about 10 mins to spare for baby 3. All very easy, straightforward labours

stickybear · 29/08/2024 22:59

Yes, even quicker. First was very fast but I had been induced. I thought / hoped it might have been just because of the induction, but nope the second was even faster! Much less scary the second time around though as I was half expecting it.

spiderdave · 29/08/2024 21:46

6 hours first time
33 minutes second time

Very similar here. About 7 hours for my first, roughly 2 hours for my second (with hindsight it was 2 hours from 'these braxton hicks are driving me crazy today". At the time it was more like 30 minutes from "shit, I think this baby's actually coming"!), 4-5 hours for third, and almost 24 hours for 4th 🤷‍♀️

TheOneWithUnagi · 30/08/2024 08:15

4 hours first time and 1 hour second time, planned home birth partly for this reason.
My midwife said that 2nd labours are often 1/3 to 1/2 time of the 1st labour.

Viviennemary · 30/08/2024 08:17

No. It was worse pain. Had to have an epidural. But bigger baby.

Tillow4ever · 30/08/2024 10:39

My first was 11 hours from waters breaking (no contractions before this) to my son being born.

My second was 6 hours from contractions being noticeable enough to realise I was in labour.

Third was horrendous, something like 14 hours but really intense the whole time.

Kdubs1981 · 30/08/2024 11:21

Much quicker yes. First 4 hours from waters breaking (no contractions at that point). Second less than two hours and a wheelchair dash down the corridor from triage. You just go in as soon as there are any signs. And you discuss it with your midwife, get this agreed and put on your notes. I wasn't even having contractions when I went in for the second, but I just told her it would all happen at once and fast and it did. Luckily she took me seriously

DrJump · 30/08/2024 11:24

Yes but DS2 and DD1 were born with induction. Active labour for DS2 was a few hours and DD1 was 16 minutes (although it hadn't told the midwife so probably and hour)

LadyDanburysHat · 30/08/2024 11:34

Yes, first was 4.5 hours, second 1 hr 45 and third 45 mins.

OopsieeDaisy · 30/08/2024 22:43

Around 6 hours first time from waters breaking to giving birth. Second time ended in EMCS but was about 2 hours from waters breaking to contractions and being fully dilated.

FluffyPinkSocks · 30/08/2024 22:49

1st was around 1 hr 10mins from confirmed labour to birth,
2nd was less than an hour
3rd was hour and half active labour
4th was around 4 hours
5th was 3 ish or so

My waters only went with the 3rd, with the other 4, the waters broke just as they crowned. Thankfully I had quick laboured and deliveries, I wouldn’t cope if they were any longer!

Mumofoneandone · 30/08/2024 22:50

First was 2 1/4 hrs - overdue and second early but about double that time scale!!
