Hi, i am 39 weeks pregnant and for the last few weeks have been experiencing a 'stabbing' kind of pain down below, usually when i walk! has anyone else had this or knows what it is please??

sorry i can't be much help on what it might be, but i can say that i've experienced it myself (both when pregnant and not pg) and it hasn't been anything to worry about. Having said that, given that you're so far along it could mean things are about to happen... hopefully someone who knows more about this will come along soon... sorry about my cluelessness on this one...

tiredlady · 17/04/2008 11:00

Is it kind of a shooting pain? A bit like an electric shock? If so I had that. No idea what it was though...

it's probably the baby pressing against a nerve.

mommylongsocks · 17/04/2008 11:05

Thanks all! yes it is like a shooting pain, it's just quite nice to know that it isn't just me, made me feel a bit better

sounds like muscular settling pains as baby descends. They can be excruciating. I got them from 36 weeks, especially when rushing to catch a train.

mommylongsocks · 17/04/2008 11:32

thanks KMUN i did think it was probably something to do with the baby decending. I almost wish it would decend a bit more and arrive ha ha! am getting a bit impatient now if you can't tell . does anyone think that if you try to induce your labour naturally then it is likely to make labour longer as the baby may not be ready?

OP posts:

I had this right through my pregnancy with DD2. Feels like someone is stabbing you with a knitting needle???

It is a nerve and should disappear after the birth.

Unless baby is ready then any form of inducing is not going to work so worth giving it a go and if your ready than theres no reason why it should slow you down.

MrsMacaroon · 17/04/2008 14:23

yup- phoned the maternity ward and they said it's just the baby pushing down and to take it easy...lie down alot if possible and move slowly when changing positions. Never really had this with first pregnancy but it's been every day for the past couple weeks (40+8).

mommylongsocks · 17/04/2008 14:29

thats great mrsmacaroon, thanks for letting me know! its sooo painful isn't it! 40+8, wow i bet your getting really fed up now...good luck with everything

hmmm, might be your cervix dilating these were the only pains that i had before proper contractions started but i was already fairly dilated by then (only had two hours of bad contractions till ds was born)

mommylongsocks · 17/04/2008 14:42

I was hoping it was something to do with my cervix but have been having it for a while now? sounds like your contractions were ok (as ok as they can be )

I would talk to midwife/doctor if I had that kind of pain.

Not sure if you can feel anything from cervix - no nerve endings there. I had a chunk cut out of mine (loop excision) and didn't feel a thing - not then, and not even afterwards.

sophiebbb · 17/04/2008 15:19

Hello mommylongsocks

I am also 39 weeks pregnant and getting mightily fed up now!! And I have experienced exactly what you talk about for the past week when I waddle anywhere! I just guessed it was the baby bearing down on me and didn't really question it much other than that so useful to read all this.

I am going to be eating pineapple today and drinking my raspberry leaf tea which I quite enjoy!

By the way I didn't get these pains with my first one either (somebody on here said the same)

Good luck with everything!!!

mommylongsocks · 17/04/2008 17:37

thanks sophiebbb, have been taking raspberry leaf tablets for 2 weeks now in the hope that it helps? may try hot curry and sex , will see how naffed off i get first ha ha...good luck to you too, let me know if you get any signs

Hi i had this and was told it was spd

Haylstones · 17/04/2008 17:47

I had this for a few weeks and thought it was just pg niggles but I actually had a uti. I'd recommend getting it checked out.

MrsMacaroon · 17/04/2008 18:31

Had a sweep today and apparently my cervix is 'favourable' but not effaced... she said it's quite anterior and I have a kind of 50/50 chance of it getting things going before my induction date (Monday).

I think, in my case, the stabbing pains have been more about the baby just being low and pressing down. I've been getting contraction type pains for weeks too but they're dull as opposed to the stabbing 'jesus christ!' ones that i get sometimes while walking. My urine was checked so no uti...blood pressure slightly raised but i think that was from fear (of the sweep!).

Tried a thai curry last night and nothin...

fun eh?

Truffy18 · 17/04/2008 19:11

I was told by my midwife that they are the pain of the baby pressing on the cervix? I had those sort of pains for 2 days before going into labour. It had obviously prepared things well as I only had an 8 hour labour! Was already quite dilated when first reached hospital! THey are a good sign as far as I can tell!

sophiebbb · 17/04/2008 22:56

My friend has had spd and I don't think that is what I have from her symptoms and from reading the ivillage site - it is simply a feeling occasionally when I walk of a really wooshing nerve pain that just feels as if the baby is low. Bit scared if it means a very quick labour as my DH is off to a funeral tomorrow for 2 hours....

KMUN · 17/04/2008 23:03

I wouldn't worry sophiebbb, I went 10 days overdue and laboured for 20 hours. Somewhere up there I mentioned I had these symptoms from 36 weeks-ish. Not that every pregnancy is the same. I too got very anxious about recognising labour signs, but it's true there's no mistaking them when they arrive.

mommylongsocks · 18/04/2008 16:01

bit embarassing but not sure if its related or not? me and partner had a bit of 'nookie' last night and it was a bit sore ? not terribly but enough to make it uncomfortable...ps; didn't work anyway am still here! ha ha

OP posts:
TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 18/04/2008 16:27

Haven't read all butthis is often caused when the gristly bit that joins the front of your pelvis together gives way so that the baby can get his head and shoulders out.

Painful yes but you're nearly there!

And as for the soreness after sex, at this stage it might just be dryness?

mommylongsocks · 18/04/2008 16:46

thanks duchess! sounds horrible doesn't it, but yes am nearly there...hopefully

Am 39+6 today and been having stabbing pains too. Have been told its either a nerve being pressed on or possibly effacement, but if it feels like sitting on a knitting needle (don't ask how am supposed to know what thats like!), then its perfectly normal. Been having them for two or three weeks now.
