3kids - that's awful, and you should lodge a complaint with the hospital, as clearly you were not being appropriately cared for. I trust DC3 arrived safe and sound?

I was induced with my first child, and experienced what I thought were contractions just a few hours later. I was own as DH had been sent home as it was at night. I went and interrupted the nurses (drinking tea and chatting) at 3am, and was told to go and take a bath on my own. I did, and then got out after an hour or so and was having what I was sure were fairly strong contractions - but again I was told that this was just the induction, and that real labour would be MUCH worse. I spent all night pacing around my bed on my own, trying to be quiet as people were trying to sleep around me. In the morning a midwife came to give me a second pessary and I repeated that I was sure I was already in labour, and wasn't keen to have another one. She reluctantly agreed to examine me, to discover I was 8cm!

I was then rushed over to the labour ward (had to carry heavy bag on my own) and had DD a couple of hours later. DH made it for the last hour or so.

As a first time Mum totally on my own it wasn't a great experience! Fortunately the midwife who delivered DD was fab. I should have lodged a complaint but didn't - I suspect this happens more than it should.

Yep.

Twice.

3kidsisquiteenuff · 12/04/2008 16:13

thanks for your reply,ds did arrive safely and i might add that he was nearly born into my pants, what i shouted to dh will always be ingrained in my mind"GET MY KNICKERS OFF!!!" lol the mw didnt even have time to put her gloves on he shot out of me like a barrel out of a gun. i feel i was treated unfairly and was put under unessersary stress at an already stressful time. wanted to complain but was very ill with pnd so i didnt feel like i had the strength

Yes, friend having home birth told she wasn't in labour and mw left.
her and her dh then spent a frantic few hours wondering what the hell was wrong with her, cos if this wasn't labour, how awful was labour going to be?!?
they then got mw to come out again - who got stuck in traffic - who got there about 45mins before baby arrived
all well in the end but the few hours in between must have been hellish for both of them.

katyt1 · 12/04/2008 16:15

oh and 3kids, that's disgraceful treatment

and surr3ymummy - i hate how there's meant to be such a firm schedule to labour, like nature is watching the clock...

magnolia74 · 12/04/2008 16:17

Yep every birth apart from last!
1st baby was induced and examined at 7am to be told no signs yet although I was having contractions.
Examined again at 8am and told no nothing yet. Waters broke at 8.30am and dd1 was born at 9am
Twins at 35 weeks and they insisted I wasn't in labour all night. Finally gave me epidural at around 6am but still insisted I wasn't in actual labour. Waters broke at 8am Girls were born at 8.30 and 9am

Dd4 at 33 weeks, again insisted I wasn't in labour, at 33 weeks dd4 was breech and they said don't panic she won't be born, finally got them to read notes and they whipped me off for c section and found placenta abruption!!

It didn't matter how much I told them about previous births they refused to listen to me or my body

mypandasgotcrabs · 12/04/2008 16:22

I was told with ds1 that I wasn't in labour. But I had high blood pressure, so mw wasn't leaving me. After doing all the necessary tests, she did an internal only to find I was almost fully dilated! If it hadn't been for my blood pressure, I probably would have been sent packing.

burstingbug · 12/04/2008 16:27

I was told with DS2 that I was 4cm, soft and stretchy, but no where near ready yet and to walk round the labour ward.
Half way round on my 'wander', contractions were so intense, that I had to go back to my room, I asked the midwife to check my progress as I felt the need to push. She said that I couldn't possibly be ready to push, but to get on the bed to check, low and behold, a few moments later, the pushing began and DS2 was born.
I had a 2nd degree tear as the midwife didn't have time to find her scissors to give me an episiotomy shudder.

3kidsisquiteenuff · 12/04/2008 16:30

that wasnt all though the mw wanted me to go home but because we didnt have any transport they let me stay.i hate to think what would of happened it we had gone home i would of been petrified!!.two hours b4 ds was born i was begging for an epidural but like i said i was told that i wasnt in full labour.the only thing that kept my spirits up was knowing that i could get a lovely ,fantastic epidural.
now i say it was my worst labour out of the 3

I went to the hospital because of some red blood I saw in the morning. I got there and was 1 cm (had been for weeks) My ob/gyn said that I wasn't in labor, but would admit me wait a few hours and start an induction. Boy was she surprised when she came to check on me 1.5 hours later and rupture the membranes and found me 7 cm dilated. She said, well I guess you are in labor. ds2 was born 45 min later.

grouchyoscar · 12/04/2008 17:01

Oh Yes, I told my CMW tha I was in labour - No your not, YES I AM for 2 days. I was taken to the delivery suite while going to an ante-natal appointment about being induced (I don't bloody need bloody inducing, I'm in LABOUR don't you know) and discharged myself (wasn't happy, I'd rather deal with it at home)

Next day CMW pops round to tell me off - Your not in labour, You'd know if you were in labour. Make an appointment to see me on monday.
Can you check everything is OK cas I'm sure something is happening? -
OK but I won't do an internal today. -
would you mind?

CMW does the James Herriott bit and goes pale...Whats up (me in a moment of panic) CMW - you're 7 to 8 cm dilated and you need to be in maternity NOW! You planning a sneaky home birth?

  • I don't have the shower curtains!

5 hrs, and a cylinder of entinox later DS arrives at the midwife lead unit

Told you I was in labour!

lulumama · 12/04/2008 17:06

3kids, were you not examined on admission?

that is a horrible experience, and i am sorry that you were not believed.

i was told i was one of those women who does not dilate 7 hours before DD arrived vaginally... (first birth em c,s) but you know, mws do get it wrong sometimes, and i doubt the intention is to make women suffer, although i accept on rare occasions, women are treated deliberately nastily.

I was told on the phone whilst alone at home that I wasn't in labour (I was actually already pushing in retrospect), babe was born less than one hour later. Thanks to my insistence, MW arrived before babe. JUST.

I was told that I wasn't in established labout for about a day. And if I didn;t get a move on they would induce me . As I was in quite a bit of pain and my waters had broken I begged leave to differ. But I smiled sweetly and proceeded to walk the wards all night until about 5am I called the nurse who finally agreed I was in established labour.

pucca · 12/04/2008 18:32

I had a show on the Monday, Weds and Thurs pacing around downstairs in pain at 3am, Sat i thought my waters were trickling, went into see MW and was told, no way nothing happening bla bla bla, come away thinking i was going mad.

Sunday morning, waters went and after 1 hr i was 3cm!

3kidsisquiteenuff · 12/04/2008 20:37

My consultant says any woman who is having contractions and is dilating is in labour and he gets unbelievably cross with midwives who say otherwise....

lulumama · 12/04/2008 21:49

am surprised 3 kids, as usually , 3-4 cm is classed as established labour

cds?

MissPaulaYates · 12/04/2008 21:51

yes me - last time

a paronising mw put her hand on mine and said ' i think we both know you are not in labour'

gave birth to lovely baby boy 8 lb 8 oz two hours later

sure felt like labour to me - it was my fifth baby

3kidsisquiteenuff · 12/04/2008 21:55

do you know if i can get a copy of my notes and how do i go about doing that .i do know that they had written on my notes that labour was 2hours long.one mw said to me if you have another baby it would have to be a home birth ,i felt like saying oh shut up if you had your way ds would of been a home birth(totally unwanted). im still very bitter that i didnt get the level of care i expected i just felt like an incovienience to them .

it was really not nice actually - i was kin of embarrassed too infront of dp

ten minutes after she said it i was doubled over and bleeding in the loo at which dp got a bit shirty and said 'i think she needs to go to delivery'

would have loved to see the mw again and say ' still think it wasn't labour?'
