MixedCouple2 · 15/07/2024 15:57

Just wanted to know anyones stories with castor oil especially 2nd / 3rd etc time Mums.

We are planning to use it at the end of 39 weeks if DS2 doesn't show up. I have done loooads of research and looked at the scientific studies and know the safe and tested amount (60ml). But just wanted to know how others induction with castor oil worked out and if you used the correct amount, and when etc.
Many thanks.

As stated the science is stronger for the positive use of Castor oil and there is little support for intercourse. Prostoglandins is not high enough in a normal ejaculation. You would need buckets of it foe it to have an effect. The only thing they atate is oxytocin which can be relased in other ways such as nipple stimulation and watching a good film that makes you relaxed.
Not everyone has side affects like loose bowl movements with castor oil. Some people are sensitive to it some are not.

Again the post was created so those who went through it could share their stories. So far the responses have all been opinions not own experiences or even anything scientific based. No links for any of the claims made either.

It’ll clear you out and start contractions, but if your body isn’t ready; your body isn’t ready. So contractions that aren’t going anywhere too fast just because, aren’t good for you. So I suggest don’t do that. Focus on softening you cervix is my advice.

It's so ridiculously unsafe OP, you clearly haven't read stories about babies opening their bowels before they actually exit the birth canal, and then inhaling this, causing lung issues

I'm baffled that you're actually planning on doing this - do some more research, please

Absolutely. OP, don't do this crazy thing!

I'm not talking about ejaculations, I'm talking about poking the cervix.

Since you obviously haven't read my post properly, it's clear you've made your mind up. Why don't you just try it out and see what happens.

Sidebeforeself · 20/07/2024 15:09

Why on earth you would risk harming your baby is beyond me.

dbeuowlxb173939 · 20/07/2024 15:12

I've heard horror stories about castor oil from my Grandma who was forced to take it before giving birth (was the done thing back then apparently to clear the bowels before birth...)
Nipple stimulation is meant to be more effective

In other words, 'please only give answers I like'. OK, have it your way. But it's still a crazy idea.

It’s like drinking Vaseline…
Or foams up and 2/3 wasted on the countertop if added to orange juice.
I couldn’t down the stuff at all.

Newsenmum · 20/07/2024 17:19

Why are you desperate to get the baby out early? You can just refuse an induction you know, if that’s what you’re worried about.

Paulettamcgee · 20/07/2024 17:21

I used it to bring on an overdue labour. I can categorically state it is the worst thing I have ever chosen to do.

The pain from the castor oil was worse than last.

Truly vile, evil stuff and I was an imbecile to have tried it.

Hope that helps 😂

Paulettamcgee · 20/07/2024 17:22

Last = labour

Lelophants · 20/07/2024 17:22

Have you had a baby before op? Labour is no joke and it can make labour much more painful so I really wouldn’t do it to yourself.

DinaofCloud9 · 20/07/2024 17:23

People are still using castor oil?

I'm shocked at this. It hasn't been thought safe to use for years now.

Yeap been eating dates and primrose oil and have lost some of my Mucas plug as it is my 2nd baby and comtractions have been on and off aince week 35 my Midwife said I am probably 2-3cm anyway. Been doing all the exercises and squats and side stepping to engage baby etc.
Using Castor oil is my final step after everything else. As said I have done all the research at efficacy of its use post 40weeks.

I have had it many years ago and was fine with taste and texture not an issue for me. I used it for another reason back then. I also used castor oil packs on my abdomen for liver and reproductive reasons.
I have tasted worse things. In my culture we use a lot of herbs and concoctions that taste vile 😂

Loads of studies published in the last 4 years + showing it is safe.

Thanks for the story. Did you take 60mls as advised safe? And when did you take it with a meal after or on an empty stomach?

Thank you i scrolled theough the many papers listed and basically half say no neonatal distress or affects and half say potential affects but not conclusive if that would have happened anyway without it's use.
Some of those papers I have seen on Pubmed and other peer reviewed web sites.
Thank you for sharing.

For those who think medical induction is safe:-
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9240406/
:- "Oxytocin is one of the most commonly used drugs in labor induction. There are several side effects reported for this drug including uterine hyperstimulation, water intoxication, placental abruption, and increased postpartum hemorrhage [11, 12]."

This is known and told to patients by their midwives at my bookong I was told going consultant led is a slippery slope of interventions and high risk complications. And shoupd be diacourgee unless.medically warranted I.e medical necessity / emergency. So needs to be justified on the grounds of the benefits outweighing the risks.

There are postsers all up around the birthing centre that state the statistics for 1st and multiparous women when going consultant led the outcones vs staying local / home births and uaing natural safe methods.

I suppose one of the issues with this type of research is the ethics. If there is risk to baby, or mother, it's unlikely any true unbiased research will be done as it won't pass ethical approval. Although that being said is any research truly unbiased?!

The WHO and NICE guidelines recognise any induction of labour carries increased risk of intervention.

I personally wouldn't use castor oil, due to the advise of a midwife about having diarrhea in labour. However, I am taking raspberry leaf tea, meditating, using ball, yoga, exercise, sex and nipple stimulation/harvesting collustrum to try and get things moving. I don't want to be induced again!

HarrietTheSpyglass · 21/07/2024 09:23

Why are you trying to induce labour bang on 40w? What if baby decides to come alone at 40+2? Why can’t you just wait?

timetorefresh · 21/07/2024 09:24

I don't understand why you would risk it. Just wait

piloqeula · 21/07/2024 09:25

Oh for goodness sake are people still doing this?!

Robinkitty · 21/07/2024 09:27

Do not do it!
I speak from experience please don’t risk doing this.

This was nearly 29 years ago so not 100% clear on amounts but I think it was two tablespoons and I took it in the evening. In the early hours of the morning all hell broke loose in my bowels and continued to do so for days. My god the cramps.

Oh, and the main point, no impact on labour. Was induced at 14 days overdue.

I did lots to try and bring on labour. Brisk and long walks, carrying heavy items, running up and down the stairs, sex and the evil castor oil. Nothing worked. She was born at 42+1 small but very chilled out. I just think she wasn't ready yet.
