DD was OP all through my pregnancy and remained so, she was born face up, so did not turn in labour, as i mistakenly thought for a long time

If you had an OP baby can you tell me ,please, if you know:

1)how many hours you were having contractions before labour was established?

2)how long from 3 cm - 10 cm?

3)how long the second stage was?

4)and if the baby was born face up/face to pubes/stargazing?

my answers are:

1)15 hours to get to 3cm

2)2 hours 45 minutes to get from 3cm to 10 cm

3)30 minutes of pushing

4)baby born face up

TIA

I was made to stay on the bed on my back and as it was my first I didn't know enough to demand to be allowed up! I did ask but was told they had to monitor me continuously as I was 12 days overdue and induced.
Had a crash section as they finally realised DD was stuck when she went into distress. She was stuck just behind my pubic bone apparently and had to be pulled back out. She had terrible bruising across her forehead and still has a birthmark on her eyelid (not sure if that is the cause but that eye was all swollen and red for days after the birth.)
Like one of the other posters my pelvic floor was totally wrecked by the experience, to the extent that I had to go for fanjo physio just to be able to walk quickly / jump / dance etc without leaking. Quite angry and bitter about the whole thing really

Have had 2 OP babies

  1. Wasn't checked but would estimate about 6 hrs

  2. Would guess about 3.5 hours

  3. 4 hours

  4. Face down

  5. Was checked 1 hr 15 minutes into labour and already 4-5 cms dilated.

  6. Estimate about 1 hr 30 minutes (labour from 1st contraction to delivery was about 4 hours)

  7. 1hr 15 mins

  8. Face down

Spidermama · 12/04/2008 22:25

1)5-ish.

2)Didn't measure but I remember he seemed to be really stuck and couldn't get round the bend for ages. He was my 4th so I'd been expecting him to slither out like an eel.

3)An hour and a half of pushing at least. The MWs were maouvering me like a large piece of livestock and my neighbours could hear me mooing like a wilderbeast.

4)Face to pubes. Ouch! In this very room at this very spot where I type.

Just saw your 2nd set of questions.

Had a failed ventouse and forceps delivery with DS1 - they didn't know by that point which way round he was.

DS2 was a natural delivery (thankfully).

DS1 - didn't really have a midwife with me for most of the birth. By the time I did I was so exhausted from the pain that I couldn't move so was on my back. Was almost completely immobile with SPD which got worse as the head came down.

DS2 - spent most of my labour at home until I was transferred. Used a swiss ball to stay upright. Midwifes didn't really say anything about position. When I arrived at the hospital I got on my hands and knees to push. The midwife asked me if I wanted to lie on my back, but I refused. I knew I'd have no chance of getting him out naturally if I did this.

1- many many many
2- very (from admission to labour ward to delivery was about 20 hours I think)
3- is 2nd stage the pushing? Not very long, I think I was allowed about 45 minutes of trying to avoid c-section. I was waiting for a 'lip' of fricking cervix to finally dilate away, which it wouldn't do because it was swollen from pressure of head anyway...
4 - face at angle, so trying to come out eyebrows first. Is that stargazing?
(OP and angled head all not diagnosed until I was in delivery suite...)

tigana · 12/04/2008 22:36

Oh, was minutes away from c-section, had had toenail polish removed and evrything! They dragged in a Consultant to try forceps (ype they don't usually use). Had Cons, Registrar, SHO, midwife and MW team leader/matron/senior-type in room with me... the odd porter and medical secretary may have also popped in but I wouldn't have noticed!
No encouragement to move at all. Was abandoned in labour ward, moved around a bit because it sort of helpe dthe pain, but couldn't go far as was busy vomitting too.
Monitoring once in delivery room - actually this was needed as ds was distressed every time I lay on my left side ( the same side the epidural didn't take on!)

MegBusset · 12/04/2008 22:38

1)about 36 hours

2)about 10 hours

3)very quick, i pushed for 10-20 mins but then my contractions stopped and baby was distressed so they hoovered him out.

4)no idea

The MWs did try to keep me mobile but I was in so much agony that after about 42 hours I was practically paralysed and sent for an epidural.

I had no idea DS was OP until some way into labour. If there's a next time, I am scrubbing floors for the whole 9 months, there is no bloody way I want to go through that again.

I had 3 out of 4...

DD1
1)how many hours you were having contractions before labour was established? 2-3

2)how long from 3 cm - 10 cm? Never fully dilated. Was in labour for about 12 hours then delivered with Kiellands forceps. They rotated her so she was born face down.

DD2
1)how many hours you were having contractions before labour was established? since very first contraction I guess about 10 hours, but very irregular and I had a pretty normal day.

2)how long from 3 cm - 10 cm? 6 hours

3)how long the second stage was? about 20 mins

4)and if the baby was born face up/face to pubes/stargazing? No

DS
1)how many hours you were having contractions before labour was established? 8

2)how long from 3 cm - 10 cm? 5.5

3)how long the second stage was? 20-30 mins

4)and if the baby was born face up/face to pubes/stargazing? No

Thankfully DD3 got it right

Ceolas · 12/04/2008 23:12

Ah tigana, yes the swollen lip of cervix...

tori32 · 12/04/2008 23:28

dd1
Took 27hours to dilate from 1-4cm.
Took 7 hours to dilate from 4-9cm (at home!)
didn't get to pushing as didn't dilate any more and head only 3/5 engaged at the end stage. DD1 stuck. Delivered by EMCS under GA.

dd2 (2.5 wks ago!)
took 9 hours to dilate from 1-6cm
took 7.5 hours to dilate from 6-8cm.
again was not able to start pushing as started to heamorrhage from my bladder and baby didn't descend. DD2 delivered by EMCS under spinal anaesthetic 2 hours after I got to 8cm and cervix was still the same.

Both labours I had to have my waters broken.
Both were big babies. DD1 9lb 12oz and DD2 10lb. HTH

tori32 · 12/04/2008 23:34

PS both times I wasn't told that baby was OP until I was almost fully dilated .
I was strapped to the monitor last time due to my c-section with dd1, against my wishes because I wanted to concentrate on OFP positions. I knew there is a higher risk of an OP baby if the placenta is anterior (which both mine were) due to the baby tending to face the placenta IYSWIM. DD2 was lateral until the last examination so had I been able to adopt OFP positions I may have been able to turn her and avoid a c-section

orangehead · 12/04/2008 23:38

ds1

  1. mins 2)15 hours
  2. 2 1/2hrs then emergeny section ds2 1)2hrs 2)16hrs 3)3 hrs then threatre for forceps delievery and a hell of alot of stitches 4)dont know as was unconscious both dss op
