lulumama · 08/04/2008 11:55

DD was OP all through my pregnancy and remained so, she was born face up, so did not turn in labour, as i mistakenly thought for a long time

If you had an OP baby can you tell me ,please, if you know:

1)how many hours you were having contractions before labour was established?

2)how long from 3 cm - 10 cm?

3)how long the second stage was?

4)and if the baby was born face up/face to pubes/stargazing?

my answers are:

1)15 hours to get to 3cm

2)2 hours 45 minutes to get from 3cm to 10 cm

3)30 minutes of pushing

4)baby born face up

TIA

does OP mean "back to back"?

lulumama · 08/04/2008 12:01

sorry, back to back baby, or OP , or posterior

all meant the same thing !

Ds2 was OP. He turned just before I started pushing.

About an hour of BH like contractions before established labour, waters broke a couple of hours before fully.

3-10cms in about 2 hours, I went from 3-5 in 2 hours then 5-10 in a couple of minutes literally.

48 mins pushing. They wrote labour length down as an hour and 48 mins I think.

He turned just before pushing stage.

RubySlippers · 08/04/2008 12:03

Anyhoo, in answer to your very non scientific survey:

1)how many hours you were having contractions before labour was established?
2 days of contractions before going into active labour

2)how long from 3 cm - 10 cm?
9 hours

3)how long the second stage was?
1 hour of pushing

4)and if the baby was born face up/face to pubes/stargazing?
no idea whatsoever - will ask DH

belgo · 08/04/2008 12:07

1)36 hours to get to established labour
2)7 hours but got 'stuck' at 7cm
3)minutes. Once she had turned, she came out immediately.
4) I'm not sure of her exact position at this stage, but I think she had turned to a better position.

Midwife at the manually turned her into a better position. That was hell. It was my second delivery, and far worse then the first.

Enid · 08/04/2008 12:09

very quick from first twinges to 10cm

very lnog and protracted second stage (3 horus of pushing)

high forceps to turn then ventouse to pull out

she was transverse op though which I do not recommend

next two babies presented fine

Enid · 08/04/2008 12:09

born face up

luvaduck · 08/04/2008 12:10

DS was OP despite cleaning the floors for a week
36 hours before established
3-10cm took 17 hours with the help of synto as stopped dilating at 5cm despite contractions going bananas (4 every 10 mins v v painful)
pushing 25 mins with v large episiotomy
born face to pubes
ow
hoping for anterior next time round

luvaduck · 08/04/2008 12:13

have any of you had anterior baby before or after?
i was a bit traumatised by how painful it was and i know op is more painful - but is it a LOT more? (I did have an epidural after about 36 hours when i had the synto, and obviously felt like a failure but was threatening to commit suicide at that point! still had back pain with epidural but nowhere near as bad)

peanutbear · 08/04/2008 12:14

Ages for all the answers I was in labour for a total of 48 hours I ended up having an epidural
I think the irth was badly managed any way but he ended being born ventouse after the Dr came in and said jesus this baby should be out by now its ventouse or section!!
so

  1. 10 hours
  1. 37 hours ish

3 it didnt seem to take them long to suck him out!!!

baby born face up with a lovely suck mark on his head

peanutbear · 08/04/2008 12:15

my other 2 babies were face to the side I think ?? DD was by far the easiest most well managed baby Labour was actually really nice which after my first 2 experiences I wouldnt have thought possible!!!

RubySlippers · 08/04/2008 12:16

luvaduk - i had a lot of back pain with this labour (DS is a PFB and only child right now so have nothing to compare it with)

I had gas and air only as couldn't have an epidural, but seemed to work well for me

also, i had a second degree tear, and being stitched up after was awful and not something i had really thought about

DS had been back to back throughout my whole PG

welliemum · 08/04/2008 12:21

lulumama, my first was OA and my second OP.

The second labour was far more painful than the first. I could feel that it was harder work too (active labours both times, delivered standing up).

I can't answer your survey exactly as I don't know how long the different stages lasted but labour got established quickly and lasted about 8 hours in total. She didn't turn in labour and was delivered OP, no instruments but as I said, extremely painful and hard work.

I don't like to imagine what it would have been like if I'd been lying on my back .

madmouse · 08/04/2008 12:23

1)how many hours you were having contractions before labour was established?
2 days...
2)how long from 3 cm - 10 cm?
In the end a few hours with the synto drip on high and an epidural. But that was after 12 hours not dilating.
3)how long the second stage was?
2 hours, but that was try to push, oh no baby doe snot like it, into theatre ready for c-section, forceps, one big push oh hello baby.
4)and if the baby was born face up/face to pubes/stargazing?
No, turned by doctor

The whole thing took 3.5 days and I just escaped a c-section. My lo just would not press down hard enough to establish labour

EachPeachPearMum · 08/04/2008 12:23

Hah! Where to begin?
Dd was OP- they did not realise this until I had been in labour for 20 odd hours.

EDD + 3days. Was feeling huge and fed up. Coerced Lured Dh in to bding to move things along at 8.30am. He went to work. Waters broke 10am, contractions started. Were regular straight away- 6 minutes apart, then 5. Went off to the birthing centre, was examined and told I was 9cm already - then with the next breath was told the birth centre was closing to to lack of staffing .
Didn't want to go home (DH doesn't drive) so was sent to labour on the ward. Contractions continued every 5 mins.
9 hours later birth centre re-opens, we move down there. put on G&A.
Contractions continue, copious amounts of fluid are coming out of me, complete with meconium .
Moved to birthing suites instead. labour continues. Around 4am am examined again- I'm now 2cm What? AM in agony now, and pretty much out of it. Have epidural.
7am baby starts to go into distress, and they discover she is OP.
OB starts to move for ECS. Several other emergencies happen in the meantime, so successive surgery teams taken up. 11.am- go up to surgery, dd born at 11.20. Aspirated, but healthy.

1)how many hours you were having contractions before labour was established? The contractions were regular and strong from pretty early on.

2)how long from 3 cm - 10 cm? Hahaha- I'm Dr Who me!

3)how long the second stage was? Never really got to 2nd stage I think

4)and if the baby was born face up/face to pubes/stargazing? She was still 180degrees when they pulled her out...to the words 'Oh- she has a head like a quince'

Maybe I should get someone to go over my notes with me? If I'm being honest- I am still very disturbed by our experience.

welliemum · 08/04/2008 12:23

Sorry, luvaduck, it was you not lulumama asking about pain!

lulumama · 08/04/2008 12:28

thank you all for your answers

a real mix of experiences

for those who found it traumatic, then do see about debriefing with a MW, and going throuhg your notes , so you understand exactly what happened and why

DD1 was OP from about 36 weeks of pg onwards, despite all those useless nct exercises foetal positioning exercises. This was my first baby. Labour was 24 hours from being woken up by contractions at 5 am until delivery. I was 5-6 cm dilated when I got to hospital at 1pm, i.e. had been having contractions for 8 hrs by then. Don't know how long it took me to get to 3cm. It then took about 15 1/2 hrs to get to 10cm wth the help of synocinon as had stopped dilating , also despite incredibly painful contractions. Threw up every 20 mins, all the way through. Pushed for about 30 mins, also had epi ("incase you need ventouse" ) She was born face down, MWs said that she had turned round several times during labour.

JodieG1 · 08/04/2008 12:29

I'd had two anterior babies prior to ds2 but I was on bedrest from 22 weeks with him so I believe that's why he was OP.

Labour with him was much more painful than the first two and because of the speed I felt a little out of control. All three were natural though with just a small amount of gas and air. I think I had gas and air with ds2 for about 10 mins when they were trying to put a clip on his head.

She tried 5 times and failed, that was very painful for me.

needahand · 08/04/2008 13:56

1)how many hours you were having contractions before labour was established?
22 hours

2)how long from 3 cm - 10 cm?
12 hours

3)how long the second stage was?
1h30mn

4)and if the baby was born face up/face to pubes/stargazing?
Can't remember, was out of it by that point

TheBlonde · 08/04/2008 14:26

DC1 - timings are guesses

  1. 13 hrs 2)3.5 hrs 3)1.5 hrs 4)face up

DC2
total labour was more like 14 hrs I think?
3)1 hr
4)face up

love2sleep · 08/04/2008 14:48

1)how many hours you were having contractions before labour was established?
3 days!

2)how long from 3 cm - 10 cm?
not sure as was never checked but probably only about 2hours

3)how long the second stage was?
3 hours then into theatre for forceps

4)and if the baby was born face up/face to pubes/stargazing?
was coming through sideways (had turned halfway from OP) and they roated him manually before using the salad tongs

PuppyDogEyes · 08/04/2008 14:53

1)9 hours, i think
2)16 hours, i think
3)3 hours
4)face up, with forceps after getting stuck.
anterior placenta too.

Lubyloo · 08/04/2008 15:02
  1. Waters broke 5:30am on Saturday. First contraction 3pm Sunday afternoon then constant but irregular contractions until I went in to be induced on Tuesdy night and was told I was 3cm

  2. Think it was about 10 hours

  3. Pushed for a little over 3 hours then down to theatre for an attempted ventouse delivery.

  4. Emergency c-section. Ventouse failed and DD was not in right position for them to try forceps.

KateF · 08/04/2008 15:15

dd1 was OP:
6 hrs to get to 3cm
3 hours to go from 3-10cm
Pushed for about 10 mins then Mw lost heartbeat and dd was hauled out by ventouse
delivered face up

dd2 was conventional position and dd3 face presentation with hand up (ouch!)
