I don't want to try to for a VBAC. I tried with DC2 but my scar started rupturing so I don't even want to go into labour this time and risk it.

I have had one emergency and one planned and tbh, I think I got over them in pretty much the same way.

The planned one was so much calmer though, and pretty surreal as I walked down to theatre (I was already staying on the ward)and it was all very easy for want of a better word.

I do think that the second time around, as others have said, you do realise more when you need pain relief and I did end up coping with less after a day, and wasn't so scared to try and walk upright!

Good luck.

I've had three c/s first two planned, third technically an emergency, but actually it was still all very calm and relaxed. Can't really add much to what the others said, just take all the pain relief on offer. My third was the worst becasue my uterues had adhered to my bladder becsause of the previous scarring....not the end of the world though.

My SIL has just had her 4th C-section. All were elective but she found number 3 incredibly painful and much harder to recover from. She only had her 4th on Monday and she feels much better than with number 3 already.

Good Luck

1 emergency C/S and 1 planned.

The planned was much much easier. You can organise things in advance, theres no labour to go through so you are fresh and reasonably well slept, you can plan the help for the recovery period etc etc. I actually found it all rather calm.

As everyone says, just demand drugs. You're on a drip anyway they might as well keep pumping you full of the good stuff. Don't wait until you are already in pain to ask for a top up, ask before it starts to hurt. There is no need to suffer. Then after the drip comes out, try and get dihydrocodeine as well as the voltaral (diclofenac) and paracetemol. This will get you through the first few days, more if they give you some to take home! Also demand help - you've just had a C/S, and although the midwives will want to get you moving quite fast to help the recovery, you should be getting help with the baby etc.

Also don't be shy re organising help for the recovery period after you are home. You get better much quicker when you concentrate on your baby and healing and nothing else.

i had one emergency and 2 planned(but 3 weeks early so never got to date they gave me).i found i recovered quicker/better with 3rd even with bladder damage.but my 1st i was put to sleep so out of it for days!and 2nd was only year and 5 days later so i think i was in shock(whole nearly 9 months to prepare and i was still shocked ANOTHER baby!!).

MindingMun · 04/04/2008 14:16

3 out of my 5 children were born by section

DD1 emergency section (failure to progess)
DD2 vaginal
DD3 vaginal
DD4 planned section (breech and previous section)
DS1 planned section (Planned VBAC but baby too big)

the recovery after all was fairly easy and quick, the worst being the first but made much easier by voltorol in the form of a suppository

I have had both - IME elective much better experience and quick recovery (tho as people have said each individual case is different).

With emergency I had a very long labour was exhausted when had c/s. With elective I'd had a good nights sleep, meal night before, elective at 11am (rather than 4am!) etc..

Also I knew what to expect. Got moving sooner, took pain relief. Went home after 48 hours - was doing gentle aerobics class after 6 weeks - no long term complications.

madcol · 04/04/2008 14:32

Some of you mentioned bladder problems. Were you warned about that ? What happened?

I'm asking cos I've been told I have an 80% chance of needing 2nd C-section and have been to scared to think of conceiving again.
