Emergency C Section After Epidural | ++ Only Vote If You Had An Emergency C Section

My partner has had 2 births by emergency C-section. 1st one was 6 years ago the 2nd one was less than 24 hours ago.

Both times the epidural was done and within 2 hours of the procedure, an emergency c-section was called.

Yes (also can't vote)

CatchAButterfly · 06/02/2024 23:01

Are you trying to see if an epidural leads to an emergency c section?

fairislecable · 06/02/2024 23:01

To balance up your voting I had 3 epidurals and no c section was needed.

weknowfrogsgotralalalala · 06/02/2024 23:03

My C-section had nothing to do with my epidural - I had an induction, my son was by this 2 weeks late, and was too big to come out any other way.

Snap, me too for DC1, DC2 was by c section too but as an unplanned emergency so no epidural for that.

Cattenberg · 06/02/2024 23:09

I didn’t have an epidural during labour, but ended up needing an EMCS. My baby was a bit big for someone my size and was also back-to-back.

IreEve · 06/02/2024 23:11

Possibly projecting here but I think I see what you're getting at. I don't think epidural leads to emergency section but I do think they encourage you to have an epidural if they think you're going to end up a section...and then it becomes a self fulfilling propechy.

1st emergency section, no epidural just straight to spinal from labour.

2nd emergency section followed 10 plus hours on oxy drip with limited progress, exhausted and in agony, and was told if I didn't take epidural when offered then no guarantee anaesthetist would be available later if I changed my mind....emergency section an hour later with convenient pre-section epidural placed...

acupofteamakeseverythingbetter · 06/02/2024 23:14

I had EMCS but didn't have an epidural. I was wheeled into theatre and given a spinal block on the table

Epidural or no epidural, that baby wasn't coming out without assistance!

ProseccoandPizza · 06/02/2024 23:18

Emergency c section. Waters broke in a trickle Friday afternoon. Went to hospital Friday midnight. Told to come back Saturday afternoon as no beds and no progress. Pessary Saturday evening. Second pessary Sunday morning. Hormone IV Sunday evening as still not beyond 1cm dilation. Epidural within 90 mins of drip going in as no break between contractions. Emergency c section needed at 3am. Local anaesthetic then as couldnt guarantee epidural though operation if complications. Delivered at 4:55 am.

May146 · 06/02/2024 23:21

I had an emergency c-section first time. I only had the spinal rather than epidural to get the operation. Only had gas and air up to that point. Don’t recommend it but definitely bias. Second time had a planned c-section. I haven’t voted

I agree with @IreEve. I was given an epidural after 17hr of active, but ineffective, labour with a large, back to back baby. I'd already been given the drip to induce/strengthen contractions but no improvement. Very tired mum and tired baby (monitored by head clamp) so we all knew where we were heading but had the epidural put in ~3hr before emcs.

iphammers · 06/02/2024 23:28

i want to find out if it has a negative effect during labor having it later on in the labor compared to having it earlier on. Like I already said my partner had an emergency c section within 2 hours of having an epidural .

The first birth was because she had turned septic and our son heart beat was dropping low + she overdosed on the epidural which shouldn’t have happened.

the second birth less than 24 hours ago our sons heart rate dropped too low and lower than our first son at some points it wasn’t showing a beat at all. Was the worst experience of my life not knowing if he’d make it or not. Looking at the monitor and seeing he’s heart rate go so low and the look on the midwife and doctors face I’ll never forget,

Even if there is a correlation is not necessarily causation. For example, induction births more likely to end up in emergency section. Back to back labour also more likely to require intervention. Both more painful so also more likely to opt for epidural. The epidural is not the cause but there will be a pattern. My baby got stuck. Tilted his head. Shit all anyone could have done about it, epidural I had (5 hours prior) wasn't to blame. Only thing that is epidural linked is that they can cause a drop in maternal blood pressure which drops babies heart rate which if it doesn't come back up needs a cat 1 section. Would be pretty immediate though. Also they've changed over time. I could feel when I had a contraction and when to push. Prior ones you couldn't.

Dyra · 06/02/2024 23:43

Agreed with PP. An epidural can be a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. You're likelier to need an epidural if baby is malpositioned, resulting in a longer, less productive, more painful labour. Funnily enough the same thing, you're also more likely to need a C-section for, especially as it distresses the baby.

As it happens, my second was an epidural and C-section for that exact reason. He was back to back, and (unbeknownst to us) was stuck. As a result labour was slow and fairly unproductive. I gave in and had the epidural after about 11 hours of labour. The same amount of time my first labour was total. Yet I was only 5cm... The writing was somewhat on the wall already, since you know, seconds should come quicker and easier. The C-section was called about 3 hours later as baby was starting to show signs of distress and I had made zero progress. Baby was delivered about 2 hours after that.

Was your partner on the hormone drip at all?

iphammers · 07/02/2024 00:01

the First pregnancy yes. The second one Yesterday she has the balloon which was in for 3 hours then came out. No hormone drip but lots of other drugs ( antibiotics, injection in the leg to relax her more, spinal injection and epidural)

I had the have the epidural because they thought I was heading for a C-section. In the end I had it got scary and they had to get her out fast. Epidural had not had enough time to work so I was put to sleep. The two were unrelated in my case.

Asasmomhasgotitgoingon · 07/02/2024 07:21

My EMCS followed an induction which I was encouraged to have due to high blood pressure. My son was back to back, with his chin up. My blood pressure spiked and I had severe pre-eclampsia. The epidural was given in attempt to bring my blood pressure down (along with IV beta blockers). I had an EMCS 4+ hours after the epidural as my blood pressure was still rising.

Autumn1990 · 07/02/2024 07:33

I had an epidural because I’d been in labour so long and needed some relief from it all. The epidural just made it a bit more bearable for me. Child wasn’t going to exit without an emcs as child was too big

mrssunshinexxx · 07/02/2024 07:34

2 epidural 2 emc

UnaOfStormhold · 07/02/2024 07:55

You're not going to get an accurate picture here because you've not asked for responses from people who had epidurals and then didn't need a c section, and as PP have said there are lots of other factors that mean someone who has had an epidural may be more likely to have needed an EMCS (and bear in mind that once someone has had an epidural it's quicker to give them an EMCS once it becomes necessary e.g. if the baby becomes distressed).

HotToes · 07/02/2024 07:58

I'm sure there's research to say that epidurals cause more c sections.

BouleDeSuif · 07/02/2024 07:58

I had an epidural because I'd been in labour for almost two days and couldn't take it any more, that was kept topped up for I think another 8 hours and then her heartbeat was dropping and I had pre eclampsia so I had an emergency section.
