Is it normal for my epistomy area to still ache 3 months on?

Hi all!

I had an episiotomy coming up to nearly 3 months ago this Thursday.

It's still feeling really achey and I find it's a lot worse if I'm tired. Is this normal? The doctor that checked me last said it was a significant cut that was made but looked as though it was healing.

I just don't feel back to normal still & every time I google, it indicates nothing really about the aching feeling.

This will sound strange but it's 10 years since my first one with my son, really deep severe cut and I still randomly get a shooting pain 🙈 it can take me a good 5-10mins to shake the pain

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 19/11/2023 20:37

I can’t remember exactly when mine stopped hurting but it did hurt for a long time. I think it was still painful after 3 months. Mine was 5 months ago now and it doesn’t hurt anymore so the pain should improve for you before too long.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/11/2023 20:40

Mine hurt off and on for 5 years. Especially when l used tampons.

3 months is honestly not long.

TokyoSushi · 19/11/2023 20:50

I just came on to say the same, DS is almost 13 and sometimes it still feels a bit weird, it was excruciating at the time.

dreambream · 19/11/2023 20:54

Hey OP,

I'm 7 months postpartum and mine hurts if I've overdone it with being active. It also hurts to touch sometimes. My physio and GP said it's because scar tissue that's formed is still new and sensitive. I need to massage or stretch it gently everyday to get the new skin used to movement etc.

veeolay · 19/11/2023 20:58

I'm 4 years on and still get an ache if I stand or walk for a long time. I had a very significant episiotomy and tear though and it was painful for several months.

Jellycats4life · 19/11/2023 20:59

Three months is no time at all for healing.

allhellcantstopusnow · 19/11/2023 22:19

I gave birth in summer 2009 and in winter 2010 it snowed, mine still ached when I was cold 18 months later. I think it was about 5 years before I didn't feel it at random points.

Thank you all for your replies! I guess it's going to take a little while yet then! X

I usually find it's worse when tired and has a late night or after going for a walk or something. I guess it's when your body is over worked a bit!

I was still wincing when I sat down at three months. Didn't manage to have sex for about a year.

The offending infant is 18 now and I certainly don't get pain any more but a couple of years ago I was persuaded to go for a bike ride and I reckon I could feel every stitch.

Difficult delivery and a not very competent repair.

lavagal · 20/11/2023 20:36

I had a 2nd degree tear and stitches not an episiotomy... but 6.5yrs later and it still weeps occasionally where I has stitches

I'm 2 years in and when I wear tampons I ache like mad after a few hours 😭

Cheesewiz · 20/11/2023 20:44

Tore and needed stitches when I gave birth 11 years ago and still get pain in the scar

Spirallingdownwards · 20/11/2023 20:46

Di keep an eye on this. I ended up having 2 operations after to correct an incorrectly stitched double episiotomy and then scar tissue removal after that.

WonderingWanda · 20/11/2023 20:50

Any chance you are still breastfeeding op? Mine hurt for the whole year I breastfed and then seemed to get much better after that. Although I still get odd pains around when I ovulate. For me it's clearly something hormonal.

catsnore · 20/11/2023 20:51

Mine took several years to stop randomly hurting. Was told to massage and stretch it (gently 😂). It's absolutely fine now, don't even think about it!
