Is it possible to get pregnant while on your (first) period after giving birth?

I know you can be fertile as little as 3 weeks postpartum. I have been careful using the pull out method and after 5 weeks after giving birth I had my first period and I had unprotected sex with DH thinking it would be fine. I'm waiting for an appointment to get on BC and tonight my MIL messaged me and asked me if I was pregnant and now I'm wondering if it could even be possible.

Theoretically is quite safe if done right, the actual average safety rate is around 78% and I'm waiting to get an appointment for a copper coil so I thought the chances of a pregnancy happening in the meantime were tiny, I've used this method before to space my children for over a year and a half between DC1 and DC2 (I wanted a short gap so they could grow together)

78% means 1 in 5 chance of failing. That is not great.

Update: pregnancy test came back positive 😬

Hope you're feeling ok. Do you want to keep the pregnancy going? I personally couldn't have as found it too much having them 18 months apart.

Oh OP. How are you feeling about it?

It's unlikely while actually having a period, but definitely possible both before and after your first period after giving birth.

Meet my middle children - 11 months apart, conceived before I had a period after giving birth, while fully breast feeding! Now aged 21&22.

I hope it all works out for you x

Maybe it could be leftover hormones, I'll have to call the GP to confirm... But if I were pregnant I couldn't bring myself to kill my baby... Well I guess the more, the merrier

Op your hug should of dropped way below that 5 weeks after baby so I’d guess it’s a new pregnancy x

Not why you're posting but, but... Why is your mil asking that!?

I was thinking the same 😄

but a lot of women wouldn't be wanting to have sex much for a fair few weeks while your undercarriage recovers from the trauma of birth

Seeing as everyone has different birthing experiences, 5 weeks is really not a short amount of time to start having sex once you’ve had a baby. It’s not 5 days after is it?

But OP did say after 5 weeks she's now had a period. So the pull out method was before that, suggesting sex earlier than 5 weeks.
