Is it possible to get pregnant while on your (first) period after giving birth?

I know you can be fertile as little as 3 weeks postpartum. I have been careful using the pull out method and after 5 weeks after giving birth I had my first period and I had unprotected sex with DH thinking it would be fine. I'm waiting for an appointment to get on BC and tonight my MIL messaged me and asked me if I was pregnant and now I'm wondering if it could even be possible.

An Irish friend refers to siblings with a gap of under a year as "Irish twins "....

As a mother of twins I hate this saying. Having children a year ish apart is NOT like having twins. Not one bit 🙄

Plumful · 16/11/2023 14:35

How fucking stupid can you get

Looneytune253 · 16/11/2023 14:37

Basic biology would say that you're fertile before your first period as the period is after the egg release.

Irish twins literally means two children born with less than a year between them, often in the same calendar/school year. No one thinks they are actually twins.

Lilibert456 · 16/11/2023 14:40

Yep.

PinkRoses1245 · 16/11/2023 14:45

of course you can. And WTF "tonight my MIL messaged me and asked me if I was pregnant" ??!!!

EarringsandLipstick · 16/11/2023 15:06

For all those saying 'yes you can' the answer to the actual question is, no, it's very unlikely (though not impossible) that you can conceive during your period.

But good point from MathAnxiety about it maybe being lochia still & not a period - it's soon to be having a period alright.

(And again, unprotected sex is going to lead to pregnancy sooner or later, obv)

Oh settle down. Why are some people perpetually offended?

Do you even know what Irish twins actually means? Fake outrage for absolutely nothing

Necessitynamechange · 16/11/2023 17:45

But why did your mother in law text you?

All2Well · 16/11/2023 17:48

Definitely possible.

A school friend has 2 10 months apart both born at term!

Think she thought she couldn't get pregnant again so quickly. We all thought she was struggling to lose the baby bump...she didn't twig on until about 5 months!

All2Well · 16/11/2023 17:51

Oh I mean first CYCLE is possible. Not first PERIOD.

Mummyme87 · 16/11/2023 17:55

what the fuck is wrong with your MIL?!

neveradullmoment99 · 16/11/2023 17:57

There is 11 months between me and my brother.

Branleuse · 16/11/2023 18:18

yes, you are very fertile after having a baby. Theres only 11mths between dc2 and dc3

TheDuchessOfMN · 16/11/2023 18:22

I’m confused. When did you have unprotected sex, and what makes your MIL wonder if you’re pregnant? Confused

DahliaJ · 16/11/2023 18:36

Yes, I worked with a family where premature twins ( so still very immature babies) had twin siblings, 10 months younger. Yikes!

DahliaJ · 16/11/2023 18:51

And my midwife friend who was mortified at having to go into work to request her maternity leave, whilst she was on maternity leave..unplanned pregnancy, babies 10 months apart. She's never lived that one down…😆

dixeypeach · 16/11/2023 19:08

Yes I've children born in January and November of the same year 🤦🏻‍♀️

supersonicginandtonic · 16/11/2023 19:13

Oh ffs there's really no need to be offended. My mum had two sets of Irish twins and actual twins. She was never offended 🙈 she's also Irish

Heartbreaktuna · 16/11/2023 19:14

I am sceptical that a person could have birthed 3 children and know nothing about fertility by now.

Mummymummy89 · 16/11/2023 19:18

Is your husband telling his mum about your sex life????!!!

I agree with the pp who said you're at risk of infection if you have sex when still having lochia. The placenta wound is still open. Especially without a condom.

As an aside, I don't know why anyone uses the pullout method. It must be frustrating and uncomfortable for both parties, not to mention ineffective.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 16/11/2023 00:16

It is. And this is why there’s only just over a year between my DDs….

Yup, me too. First time back in the saddle
