Been told today I’m being induced tomorrow 35+6

cookiedough86 · 19/06/2023 21:42

Agghhh!!

I will be 35+6 tomorrow and was referred for growth scans with this second pregnancy as my daughter was born small on the 5th percentile/centile I forget how you say it.

This baby has been on the 3rd then shot up at the last growth scan two weeks ago but today is back down to 3rd and his weight is now static they said he hasn’t put any weight on.
We’ve also been having issues with high PI in the cord so they said it’s safer to get him it out then keep him in and monitoring.

I had an induction with my daughter and was sooo going to push against having one this time as it was hell on earth. But I think that was because it was SO fast and the contractions were so intense I didn’t have time for any pain relief apart from paracetamol and codeine (which I threw straight back up) then gas and air. I was induced at 41 weeks and had little contractions the night before so I think my body was ready. The labour is noted as 1 hour 26 on my birth notes. I’d never forgive myself if I didn’t go for this induction and something happened but I know my body isn’t ready so it will probably be worse!!

I don’t know what I’m looking for here, just some reassurance? I know everybody’s births are different. The baby is estimated 5lb which I know is very lucky compared to how small some babies are born. Has anybody been successfully induced at just under 36 weeks? What’s the likelihood of it ending in a section? (I am absolutely petrified of this scenario!!!)
Also, with a baby of around 5lb what is the likelihood of him needing any help?

I am freaking OUT! This Wasn’t the news I was expecting when I went in today. I did buy the positive birth company Hypnobirthing book last week but haven’t got time to bloody read it now! If anyone has read it and can point out a good chapter or two to binge tonight that might help me I’d be very grateful 😅Thanks for reading the essay x

I had DD2 at the same stage due to placental failure. She was bigger (7lbs).
Normal vaginal birth, went smoothly, no special care etc. She had jaundice, which was treated on the postnatal ward.

SylvanianFrenemies · 19/06/2023 21:46

Oh and I never got round to the whole hypnobirthing prep.
But saying "I'll just do one more contraction before I get help"got me through it!

cookiedough86 · 19/06/2023 22:50

That’s really reassuring that your DD didn’t need any special care.

Also, really good advice re the ‘one more contraction’ I’ll try and bear that in mind and see how I get on 😅

Thank you for your reply!

Twins 35 weeks no special care needed both fine and now 1 both a little less than 5lds at the time and now chunky. You and baby will be fine

Blue2020 · 20/06/2023 02:24

I had my baby at 35+0 and he weighed 5lb4oz. Technically I had a emcs, I had agreed to start induction due to preeclampsia but baby’s hr being static meant it changed to emcs before I was induced because they thought he would struggle with contractions.

My baby went to scbu for 12 days, he was only in an incubator for about 3 days before transitioning to a cot. He needed blood sugar glucose/special formula temporarily, plus jaundice treatment, plus to regulate his temperature. After the three days it was then mostly getting him to take food. He spent many days with a tube because he was very very sleepy.

I was on bp medication and had steroid injections just before the csection (plus the spinal in the csection itself) so I don’t know what affect any of those had on him.

I know someone though who had a 35week baby, who’s latched after induction and who somehow managed avoiding going into scbu. Different region of the uk and different baby.

Good luck and hope the induction is going well.

Tinyant · 20/06/2023 02:28

Ask if you can collect some colostrum whilst you’re being induced. Gives you something to do, might help contractions, and will mean you have some of the liquid gold ready for when baby is here. Even if you plan on bottle feeding, colostrum for small/premature babies is really important :)

cookiedough86 · 20/06/2023 20:35

Thank you all for your replies and stories. It does show that everyone’s births are totally different! :)

Cervix as expected is not favourable at all.
Had the first gel at 5pm and am having hourly monitoring. They will do some kind of different trace before the next gel at 11pm ish which will let me know how baby is coping.
I feel like everyone I’ve spoken to today has put into my head that this will end in c section. The Midwife has just had a massive conversation with me basically encouraging me I’m not so many words to go for c section if the pessaries don’t do anything as the baby might not tolerate the drip Etc.

I didn’t know I could opt for this part way through an induction so now I have a lot of thinking to do as I am literally PETRIFIED of a c section. But need to do what’s best for this little man. this is definitely my last 😅 x

My 17 year old was born at 35+5 weighing 5lb 6. She did spend 17 days in SCBU, mostly due to feeding issues and a couple of dusky episodes. I had been in hospital since 29 weeks though due to my waters breaking. Not sure if that had an impact or not.

She is absolutely fine now and enjoying sixth form.

Insheerpanic · 20/06/2023 20:44

Cant relate having a baby early but had 1emcs and 1 elected, both fine but the elected one was bliss if offered it I'd go for it! Hope all goes well and you're both OK xx

zebrapig · 20/06/2023 21:08

DD was born at 35+5. Induction was started but ended up with EMCS after 5/6 hours as she was in distress. She weighed 4lb15 and was in SCBU for 5 days. I think that was mostly because I was too ill to care for her rather than because she needed to be there but I'm not sure as it's all a blur and I didn't think to ask as she was my first.

cookiedough86 · 21/06/2023 06:55

Thanks again for everyone who has shared their stories! I am mentally preparing that he will need some care just incase.

I had a mini meltdown last night and have ended up deciding to go for a c section today. Everyone has been so up for it apart from the consultant when he came round did have to give me the pros and cons and I did feel he was trying to talk me into carrying on with the induction but I’m just not willing to put my baby through it if it will probably fail. It wasn’t an easy decision but I do Feel a bit of a failure as I have been adamant I want another vaginal birth all the way through this pregnancy.

Anyway, we shall see what today brings. I just need to remain calm now and try not to have a panic attack on the operating table 😫Thanks again for replying everybody x

My baby wasn't early like yours but I had to be induced and as you said, it was hell on Earth. I had no pain relief (not my choice but that's another story) and my labour lasted 39 hours. For yours to have been over in less than 2 hours the pain must have been incredibly intense.

If it's the pain and general labour you're feeling anxious about then when you go in tomorrow, maybe you could ask to have an epidural put in at the same time as your induction. That's what I'll be doing for my next baby 🙌🏻 good luck 💕

MayMi · 21/06/2023 07:05

Ah sorry just missed your last post. Wishing you all the best today! 🙌🏻💗

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 21/06/2023 07:21

Good luck. Both my c sections were emergencies for various reasons but were fine in terms of recovery. I've heard planned are even better.

If baby does need to go to scbu it's unlikely to be for long at that gestation. Again both of mine spend time in scbu and they are fabulous there, staff are genuinely amazing.

Not long till you will be holding your baby. Good luck

Bea11 · 21/06/2023 07:34

I've had an emergency c-section and a planned one. The planned one was so much better and so was the recovery. It can feel a little bit overwhelming when you first go into theatre. Just remember that everyone is there for you and your baby and to make it as straight forward as possible. Best Hypnobirthing advice is to keep breathing! In through your nose and out through your mouth. Make the out breath longer than the in breath if you can. Focus on your breathing. It will calm you down. I used it during both c-sections and it was an amazing help.
Trust the decision that you've made. You've got this and are going to be absolutely amazing!
Post-section biggest tip I can give is keep up with the pain relief meds, even if you don't think you need them! Good luck xx

belle1993 · 21/06/2023 07:40

Good luck for today for you and baby.

My nephew was born at 35 weeks due to same reasons. He was 5lb2 when born and needed no aftercare

cookiedough86 · 21/06/2023 10:18

Well I was nil by mouth from 3am, had steroids for baby at 1am. Gowned up with stockings on and spoke to anaesthetist this morning Etc etc. feeling very calm as finally come to terms with the op. Then the doctor comes in and says we can’t proceed until I have the second round of steroids so I have the option to move section to tomorrow or calls on with induction. Aggh you know when you’ve just come to peace with a decision and then start to question yourself 😫 I think I’m going to stick with my guns and wait until tomorrow, in my gut I know it’s the right decision for the baby.

@MayMi
39 hours!! My word, I was a hysterical wreck after two. It was very very intense I definitely couldn’t have handled 39! I told them this time if I got to the drip stage that I wanted the epidural before and they said they ‘can’t promise that’ which I get, emergencies come up Etc. I just politely told them I’ll wait until the anaesthetist was free before starting the drip. I think they hate me but we need to stick up for ourselves! 😅

@Imamumgetmeoutofhere thank you for the reassurance! I’m glad that both of your emergencies were okay and that your babies were well looked after on SCBU ☺️

@belle1993 ah, that’s really great to hear! Thank you 😊

@Bea11 thank you so much for this! This is exactly what I needed. 💕 I have been practising breathing and will try my hardest to concentrate on that instead of the numb sensation which I know will try and take over my brain. Great advice about the meds which I’ve read a few times on here so definitely won’t make the mistake of missing any! xx

*carry on with induction

Bea11 · 21/06/2023 13:01

Sorry to hear that it's not happening until tomorrow. Really tough when you've got yourself in the right headspace! Stick with what your gut is telling you and try to stay as relaxed as you can (although I can imagine how hard that will be!). Will be thinking of you tomorrow and hope it happens as planned x

Insheerpanic · 21/06/2023 20:53

How are you @cookiedough86 x

QforCucumber · 21/06/2023 21:06

Hope you’re ok @cookiedough86 and that either baby has decided those pessaries were enough or you’re getting a great sleep before the newborn madness begins again!

justasking111 · 21/06/2023 21:12

@cookiedough86 best wishes, been there it's not fun.

cookiedough86 · 21/06/2023 21:28

Aw thank you everyone for asking! I’ve stuck with my c section plan and I feel today has been an absolutely wasted day. After being told I wasn’t having the section done today I’ve literally been given the second dose of steroids in the morning and then left in a room all day. I’ve ended up in tears as on Monday I was told the baby is measuring 3rd percentile, has stopped growing, we have a cord issue and he needs to come out. I then feel that since I chose to stop the induction I’ve been de-prioritised if that is even a word.

ANYWAY, after a mini meltdown I spoke to the midwife at 7pm and asked why I am here and can I go home as only live ten mins away and come back tomorrow morning. The doctors have literally just come in, done a trance on the baby and agreed I can go home and to call back at 7am to see where things are up to. I just feel so relieved I can get out of this room for a few hours!

Hopefully, tomorrow brings better news. Thanks again everybody for asking, my other half keeps telling me to be positive so it’s nice to still be able to rant on here a bit 😅
x

Oh you poor thing OP. All of that build up in your mind and then nothing happens.
Get some sleep tonight in your own bed. You never know, your body may relax and things start moving.
Night night 🤗
