How long were you in for after 1st baby?

I realise this will prob depend on complications/no complications/CS etc but I have Group B Strep so the MW said I will prob have to stay in with the baby for around 3 days. This is my 1st baby and people are giving differing opinions on this as I know a few other girls who have had GBS and were only in for a day.

How long were you all in for with your first?

Thanks for feedback - just curious xxx

I did not have any complications. Was in hospital for 12 mins before delivering ds1 and stayed for 1 hr 35 mons after having him!

Karen999 · 18/02/2008 14:07

Hi, I was in hospital for a total of 7 days - 4 days before and 3 days hafter...had an emergency c-section. Discharged myself after 3 days as the ward was filty and the midwives horrible!!

I am sure you will have a wonderful experience though!!

Anna8888 · 18/02/2008 14:09

Three days. I was itching to leave the afternoon before I was discharged.

happynappies · 18/02/2008 14:09

I stayed in for 5 days - most people are encouraged to stay in our mw-led unit for that amount of time. Wasn't particularly due to complications - they just like to make sure you are rested and helped with bf etc. It was lovely there - the food was great (and lots of it), I had a 6-bedded ward to myself, the mw's were excellent, I really loved it. I discharged myself from the consultant-led unit to that mw-unit the day after having dd because (a) they wanted my bed, and (b) I really didn't like it.

nickytwotimes · 18/02/2008 14:10

I wish I'd stayed in for 3 days! The midwives were great at breastfeeding advice where I was - it might have gt us off to a better start and we would have stalled some of the visitors!

notnowbernard · 18/02/2008 14:11

8 hrs

EiWishFor3MoreWishes · 18/02/2008 15:31

i had DD at 1:54am and was home by 3:00pm so not too long a family friend had GBS and her DS was not very well after birth with a temp so he needed antibiotics and they kept him and his mum in for 3 days. they might have told you this as a precaution just in case your LO needs any extra care. im sure you will be ok just thought it would be better if i gave you details of some of what i have seen iyswim

belgo · 18/02/2008 15:35

I had GBS and had a home birth. The midwife came round very regularly afterwards checking the baby and the baby's temperature, and we also had to check the baby's temperature whenin between. I also was given IV antibiotics during the labour.

My baby was fine.

clur79 · 18/02/2008 15:50

I tore very badly, and had to stay in, was for three days.

I was terrified of staying in hospital, but have to say they were very nice, and although I was desperate to get home, can't really complain about the hospital too much!

Good luck!

tassisssss · 18/02/2008 15:56

ds was born at 5pm and I got home about 1pm the following day

hadn't planned to get out so soon, but I'd not really got any rest and was desperate to get home!

spugs · 18/02/2008 16:55

5 days, i was in a tiny mw led unit and no other babies were born there the whole time. it was fab, they were really helpful with the breast feeding and showed me how to do everything (was very clueless), with my second though i couldnt wait to get out.

betterhalf · 18/02/2008 16:56

Ended up with a C-section and was in for 3 days. If it had been straight forward I think I could have come home after 6 hours.

LOVEMYMUM · 18/02/2008 16:57

Don't listen to 'people' - listen to medical staff and keep an open mind about how long you might be in for.

Hope all goes well.

MrsMattie · 18/02/2008 17:00

4 days after a c-section.

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/02/2008 17:01

24hrs. Meconium in waters so dd had to be monitored for that period before we were 'allowed' out.

Paranoid1stTimer · 18/02/2008 17:02

Wow - thanks for the response. It's great and very reassuring to get some words of wisdom from those of you who have been there done that!

Thanks. Special thanks for the mentions on GBS. I had heard about keeping an eye on the baby's temperature and was told we would have to "keep an eye out for anything unusual" but this is my first so I am sure I will be as paranoid as usual!!!

Thanks again everyone

Admitted 11pm, had baby at 3.22am, left the next day at about 5pm so about a day and a half give or take. But was readmitted the day after as baby was jaundiced and wouldn't feed. If she had of fed I could of got out later the same day.

I hated the sitting around on a ward waiting to be "allowed" home.

Second was a homebirth.

elibumbum · 18/02/2008 18:48

I was GBS+ and stayed for 5 days.

DS born late on Sunday then didn't go home on Monday as he hadn't latched on. During the Monday we noticed a rash and when paediatrician showed up at 2 am on the Tuesday - said rash normal but thought DS had a bulging fontenelle so had to have blood test for GBS infection and was started on IV antibiotics as a precaution (they have a low threshold for treatment as it can be potentially so serious).

Got the blood test results (he was negative for any infection)on the Friday and went home that afternoon.

Arbensmum · 18/02/2008 19:09

I was in for 30hrs after. DS passed meconium and I had a high temp so they wanted to observe him for 24hrs.

MuffinMclay · 18/02/2008 19:20

A week. Ds1 was very ill and in scbu isolation unit with a mystery illness and rash that turned out to be chickenpox, and I had a fever.

maxbear · 18/02/2008 20:20

I had gbs and I had decided not to have abx as all was well, I escaped after 4 hours as I wanted gp to check baby. In my experience (as a midwife) paediatricians hear the letters gbs and stick needles into the baby sometimes for no good reason.
I have to confess though I was totally paranoid for the first 24 hours though, which was silly as about 25 - 30 % of women have gbs, many of whom don't know it and most have no problems at all.

dyzzidi · 18/02/2008 20:24

I had planned section on 21st Dec. Left on the morning of Christmas eve.

Mine was a fantastic experience hospital was great Midwives wonderful Good luck.

Hulababy · 18/02/2008 20:27

I had an emergency cs flling my induction.

Was in for 2 nights (Wed night till Friday night) during the induction.

After the cs I was in for 3 nights (Fri night till Monday lunch).

mindy26 · 18/02/2008 20:31

i was in for 3 days afte having my dd, no complications, textbook labor and birth lol, i could have stayed in longer if i wanted, the midwives like to make sure bf was going fine and that i was rested and could pee ok , i had alot of trouble with that after, so sore it was scary lol, any1 havin their 1st baby take a small plastic jug in your hosp bag, a lifesaver!!!!

MrsTittleMouse · 18/02/2008 20:31

Not as long as I wanted to! I spent the first day there in labour, that night awake all night to check that DD was breathing, the next night DD was screaming all night (as were all the other BF babies in the ward, was booted out the next morning. I only really had one day of bed rest (ish) and as soon as I was home we had visitors all the time, including my mad grandmother who kept trying to wake DD up so that she could hold her.
Things will be very different this time around!

happynappies - V. interested by the way that the MW-led unit let you stay in for so long, at mine people were encouraged to go home quickly (kept talking about 6 hours), I think because it was supposed to be as close to a home birth as possible.
