Hi, please accept my apologies for posting a gross photo, but I am extremely worried.

I gave birth 2 weeks ago and just had this come out of me. Husband (bless him) ran it under water as midwives suggested (I was on the phone to them at this point) and it looked like amniotic sac?? Or is it placenta?

Midwives weren't helpful just said if I bleed heavily go straight to emergency.
How am I supposed to sleep now in case I bleed loads and sleep through it ? Sad

Just not sure what to do really. Isn't it really bad if placenta was left there for over two weeks...? Has anyone experienced this?

How do you feel?
Temperature? Nausea?

Idbemonica1 · 15/07/2022 03:19

Hi Op, looks lkke it may be a large clot? If retained placenta i would have thought you would have other sympoms - sickness, high temp?
Def go to a + e if you start to bleed heavily.
How are you feeling?

Bellyups · 15/07/2022 03:36

Keep an eye on it OP. How are you feeling generally? Pains? Temperature?
I experienced clots that size and bigger after a miscarriage, it got to the point they were falling out every 20 mins and I ended up in A&E and admitted to hospital for a week. I was diagnosed with haemorrhagic cysts.
Definitely get to a&e if it worsens, look after yourself

timeisnotaline · 15/07/2022 03:40

It looks like a blood clot. I was so relieved to be in hospital for a few days after the birth of my 3rd recently with private care so when something like this mid -tennis to baseball size dropped out I could show the midwife and ask!! All I could think of was placenta as well, I had no idea blood clots could be like that.

MrsClarkandPercy · 15/07/2022 03:56

I had a few things like that come out as well 🙈 I think it's not uncommon and they're just big clots of blood (which have clotted when out), or that's what my gp said.

Also if you bleed a lot you'll wake up. I had a few months where I had quite a lot of flooding and I always woke up (scared!!), but it just calmed down.

I think you should lie down, cuddle up to your husband and see how it goes. If you have lots of heavy bleeding or feel poorly then call them again. Xxx

newtolineofduty · 15/07/2022 04:10

Hey OP-that looks exactly like what came out of me a week after I had my baby, which was a huge blood clot. I bled more afterwards than I had been doing previously as losing the clot had made way for backed up blood to be released. I actually ended up going to MAC as I was so worried but it was all ok. They just advised to monitor the bleeding. They also did my iron levels too. You could stay up for an hour if that helped to reassure you x

I understand why you're freaking out though it's horrible to see. I was so shocked when I passed mine! X

Garman · 15/07/2022 04:37

Thats a clot, looks nothing like placenta or amniotic sac. Can be normal, but like they said just keep an eye on any further bleeding for now, contact someone tomorrow morning if you'd like more/proper advice or checking.

Squeezedsquash · 15/07/2022 04:48

I vividly remember having a shower about a week after my first baby and seeing an enormous slug on the floor of the wet room.

reader, it was not a slug. Fortunately (well, unfortunately) I was still under midwife care and they could check it for me.

Nat6999 · 15/07/2022 05:21

Hopefully now that has come out your bleeding may calm down. It is awful when it happens & nobody warns you that this can happen.

Nat6999 · 15/07/2022 05:22

Put a bath towel on the bed but hopefully things will settle, it may just have been because you have been laid down.

No temperature or fever.
I've had pain and fresh bleeding there for two weeks but midwives have said it's normal.
I've had a lot of pressure pain there too (needing to sit down often), but midwives said it's due to stitches. This was all advised to me over the phone (not on observation)

Thank you, midwives told me to run it under water, if it sort of dissolves - it's a clot.

It didn't dissolve and once blood washed away it looked just like amniotic sac..? Then midwives said it's probably leftover membranes (so retained placenta? Which is dangerous?)

Hi OP I had this too when I had given birth they are just large clots it's just your body clearing itself out unless you feel unwell in anyway I'd say you'll be fine, if your worried at all call the midwife or the maternity unit you gave birth at. Congratulations on your new arrival btw

I was in hospital with private care for 5 days post birth, and monitored etc. Nothing was found.

It's now 16 days post delivery and this huge thing drops out of me Confused

It looks like a clot, I had these after every birth. Didn't cause any issues, though it can give you a fright!

empty your bladder often as the blood can look then clot behind it.

you will not sleep through a big bleed so Try to rest.

Livingmagicallyagain · 15/07/2022 05:37

*blood can pool

I too had the all clear after the birth but fresh clots can form for weeks after. Just keep an eye on any temp or pain.

NightsinBlueSatin · 15/07/2022 05:41

It's a clot OP. Mine didnt wash away either, it looked like a liver, same consistency. Fascinating but a little bit worrying when youve never seen anything like that before. How are you feeling? If you have a temp/uncontrollable bleeding it's best to get checked out. Unfortunately though the way they check is through a vaginal ultrasound which is a bit much after birth. In any case, blood can pool in the uterus after birth which is what this is. In France it's standard that after birth a midwife will massage your uterus (every day for three days!) to break up anything and get the body to naturally pass any clots. Have you seen anyone post birth to check you out?

Thank you, it seemed to have calmed down a bit. Will monitor it hopefully there is no more now.

I just feel so unnerved as I had so much pain down there and fresh bleeding, it just didn't feel right and midwives both times told me it's all normal. Then last night they said it's prob membranes.

I do feel tired and a constant banging headache - but presume that's due to having a 2 week newborn and 2-3 hours of sleep a night x

butttonnmooon · 15/07/2022 05:55

It does look like a clot. If you feel well, no temperature then it's more than likely nothing too worry about.

Re fresh bleeding. Do you think you could be doing too much? Are you truly resting and putting your feet up as much as possible or are you on your feet a lot and doing housework etc?

I only ask because I pushed myself a little too much and every time I did things like vacuuming or carrying things up and down the stairs, I would bleed heavily. I needed to just let things go and stay on the sofa and allow my body to heal. Once I started to rest more the bleeding calmed down and eventually stopped.

@butttonnmooon
I probably am doing too much but I have a very fussy newborn who wants to be held at all times AND rocked as well, standing up.

Husband does all housework and cooking etc., plus working full time. He'll help with the baby a bit in the evenings but he's run off his feet trying to do everything whilst I deal with newborn 🥹

I get that, i was being sympathetic! The hospital context is that I do think it’s scary - it was my 3rd baby and I’d never seen this before. In my case it was the 2nd night after baby was born and I was hugely relieved to be in hospital with midwives on hand. In your case it’s later and you’re not in hospital, but it is a clot and I think it is still within normal timing unless it continues.

YesItIsI · 15/07/2022 07:22

I assume you've had your blood pressure checked re the headache? Pre eclampsia can still happen postnatally. But more likely I would guess it's related to your iron levels.

GreenLeavesRustling · 15/07/2022 07:25

I had one like that, looked like raw liver. Midwife said if it was not much bigger than the palm of my hand, not to worry

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 15/07/2022 07:28

I had clots after last two DCs and in both cases they were due to pp infection. If your bleeding turns smelly get straight onto the maternity unit, you can't not notice it, it honis.

From what you've said about needing to sit down it sounds maybe that it's been on your cervix hence your body bearing down to help pass it

Mummyjlr120 · 15/07/2022 07:36

I had this after I gave birth and kept happening for months after it slowed down once my periods went back to normal. I had a scan and had cyst on my ovaries but the lady said this couldn’t of caused it! I think it’s just ur body getting back to normal after birth they couldn’t tell me why it was happening.
