Hi, please accept my apologies for posting a gross photo, but I am extremely worried.

I gave birth 2 weeks ago and just had this come out of me. Husband (bless him) ran it under water as midwives suggested (I was on the phone to them at this point) and it looked like amniotic sac?? Or is it placenta?

Midwives weren't helpful just said if I bleed heavily go straight to emergency.
How am I supposed to sleep now in case I bleed loads and sleep through it ? Sad

Just not sure what to do really. Isn't it really bad if placenta was left there for over two weeks...? Has anyone experienced this?

Also had these from both births. The midwives checked it and basically said better out than in but keep an eye on how I'm feeling. On the bright side, the pain and bleeding improved massively after they came out!

Isn't the human body fascinating?

I had a massive clot slide out during my first shower. Looked like liver. It was fucking huge (6” long) and to this day I don’t know HOW it got out because I had a section and my cervix was closed.

my ex had to wrap it in a paper towel for the bin because to get it down the plug hole I’d have been like an Italian stamping on grapes at harvest.

Re fresh bleeding. Do you think you could be doing too much? Are you truly resting and putting your feet up as much as possible or are you on your feet a lot and doing housework etc?

@butttonnmooon
I probably am doing too much but I have a very fussy newborn who wants to be held at all times AND rocked as well, standing up.

Husband does all housework and cooking etc., plus working full time. He'll help with the baby a bit in the evenings but he's run off his feet trying to do everything whilst I deal with newborn 🥹

It's really hard isn't it.

I felt like I was constantly aggravating the healing process and in the end I just had to accept I needed to limit physical activity to caring for the baby and everything else had to wait. I could have light bleeding for the whole morning while resting then get up and hoover, make the kids dinner and take some washing upstairs and I'd start flooding.

I stopped doing any housework that involved walking about or standing for long periods and stayed on the sofa as much as possible for a week or so and the bleeding seemed to settle down then.

I had the exact same thing around the same time after giving birth in April.

It was pooled blood that dislodged after I'd done too much walking the day before.

Obviously keep an eye on it but if you feel fine and aren't in obvious pain or bleeding excessively I wouldn't worry.

DottyLittleRainbow · 15/07/2022 08:16

Seek medical advice for a full assessment. You could have an infection/retained products and are also much more susceptible to infection having given birth. Very small clots from pooling blood loss are expected but large clots more than 2 weeks after giving birth is not normal.

If you can’t contact your private provider and get seen, then GP/111/local NHS hospital maternity triage.

Hi OP I work in obstetric ultrasound so, whilst I'm not an expert, I do have a slight idea of how things work post birth. Left over 'membranes' doesn't always mean left over placenta. It could be left over bits of the sack etc. It can be dangerous if you have left over placenta as it can make you quite poorly but 2 weeks post birth you would know about it, if that was the case. You'd likely be incredibly poorly by now. Do you have any flu like symptoms?

It does look like a very large clot to me, which can be completely normal unfortunately. If you continue to have very large clots, we always encourage ladies it's a valid reason to present at a&e.

purplesky18 · 15/07/2022 08:32

Lol this is very normal, I passed a literal tennis ball sized clot after birth and freaked out then discovered I wasn’t infact harvesting an alien but that it was just a giant blood clot no one tells you about in the baby books 😂 you’ll be fine OP.

Why do you think it looks like an amniotic sac? Nothing about it looks like that to me?

Get a sling if you can, save your arms and back a lot of pain and effort.

Dyra · 15/07/2022 09:14

I had this with my first. I squished the clot up (I occasionally have to do something similar at work) and found a tiny bit of membrane. I had smaller clots that weren't as big, but still big iyswim, before and after the biggest one that were just clot. Looking at your photo that looks just like a clot.

Definitely get a sling. Lifesaver for your arms when you've got a velcro baby.

BlueMumDays · 15/07/2022 09:20

Do you remember seeing "ragged membranes" on your notes? That means the amniotic sac didn't come out in one nice piece. Half mine came out after about 12 days, and it looked like grey chicken skin 🤢 Often it needs wrapping up in a big clot before it's heavy enough to come out.

I then had what the midwife said was probably a large piece of placenta a couple of days later (I took it to the hospital in a ziploc bag and made her smell it - it was very definitely not just blood!!) Up til that point I'd had really very bad stomach pains, but once it was out that all stopped instantly. I never had a fever.

If you're feeling well, then don't panic xx

Hi I came on to say this also. My midwife said it was a clot probably lodged and after doing a long hillwalk it sort of all fell away Confused. The advice was if the bleeding got heavier to go to a&e, once there they said the blood would have been pooling and the exercise had dislodged it.

Mariposista · 15/07/2022 10:17

I can imagine seeing this was scary! Get checked out tomorrow by a nurse or GP to set your mind at rest.

Toottooot · 15/07/2022 10:22

I had similar 10 days after birth and it was retained placenta. I was readmitted and had to have a minor procedure to remove the rest of the placenta that was left. If I hadn’t gone to hospital when I had the consultant told me I would have been a blue light admission within days so please get it checked out.
