QUICK POLL - If you were overdue and had a sweep did it start you off? If so how long did it take to start? Also did it hurt (the actual sweep?)

I had one

It was uncomfortable rather than painful

I was already in v v early stages but it really speeded things up

Best of luck

Tommy · 09/01/2008 23:43

had a sweep - didn't even feel it and MW said I was already 3cm dilated.

DS2 popped out the next evening after 2 hours of labour

Tinker · 09/01/2008 23:43

Sweeps both times - baby (8 days "late") born that night 1st time and within 24 hours 2nd time (11 days over)

IdrisTheDragon · 09/01/2008 23:44

I had one at 40+3 and DD arrived fewer than 24 hours later.

The sweep wasn't anywhere near as bad as I had been anticipating - I felt rather rummaged about but it was perfectly bearable.

UniversallyChallenged · 09/01/2008 23:45

Have had 2 sweeps, one worked - was 4 days over - one didnt - was 6 days over

It hurt a little as i have tilted womb so midwife had a little trouble finding the right bit

KristinaM · 09/01/2008 23:46

I had two sweeps in last pg ( at my request) and ons in previous pg. both as i was overdue. hurt but not badly. didnt work

S1ur · 09/01/2008 23:48

Had one just before term (midwife was going holiday and wanted to 'help' me be on due date!)

Wouldn't say painful, actually reminded me of when dp is (ahem) particularly deep inside during sex, though a bit more awkward being as it is in fact not a romatic liason

Oh and it worked at any rate, though think I was good to go so to speak, mw laugh cos ds spun on her hand during the sweep!!!!

melpomene · 09/01/2008 23:56

I had one. It was a bit uncomfortable, like a smear test - absolutely nothing compared to the pain of labour. I had the sweep on a Monday afternoon and went into labour in the early hours of Wednesday morning, so with that time lag I'm not sure if it worked or not.

Good luck!

Awww Jen, try not to worry, these things are never as bad as they sound lovey.

I had a sweep with DS2 (eventually!!) then I had some gel to start me off, none of them did anything straight away, about 12 hours after the gel I went into labour, two hours later he was here.

The sweep was uncomfortable at worst, but then I had visions of emergency sections and DS1 stuck at school with noone to pick him up, so I kind of had other things on my mind!

Just try to relax, and tell us how it goes when you can, lot's of love and luck xxx

i had one when i was in the early stages of labour with dd2 (was 2 cm dilated) it was uncomfortable but it didnt half get contractions going strong

NatalieJane · 10/01/2008 09:14

OOOO meant to say as well, I was induced with both of mine and apart from the odd 20 mins stuck to a monitor (whilst in pre-labour I will add) I wasn't strapped down to anything, so induction doesn't always mean you are stuck in a bed.

Bet the midwife wished she could strap my mouth together, but thats a different story

dressedupnowheretogo · 10/01/2008 09:15

i had three when my waters broke early 2 weeks

they didnt work

felt like someone was rummaging in your knickers to be honest it didnt hurt either

not compared to induced contractions anyway

nezelette · 10/01/2008 15:57

I had one with first baby: did hurt but I was in labour a few hours later and gave birth in 3h45 minutes so seemed worth it! Will ask for another one this time if baby 2 doesn't want to come either!

LuckySalem · 11/01/2008 06:36

Well had my sweep yesterday and nothing happened. Didn't really hurt either, just wierd.

My notes say presenting part still high "3 above spines" so I'm guessing nothing is going to happen yet.

I had a sweep- it didn't do anything. I didn't feel anything either. I gave birth about 5 days later- but I was 11 days overdue!
