QUICK POLL - If you were overdue and had a sweep did it start you off? If so how long did it take to start? Also did it hurt (the actual sweep?)

Had sweeps (at least 2 each time) with my last 3 pregnancies didn't work AT ALL and at least one or two of them were painful rather than uncomfortable/unpleasant IYSWIM

ghosty · 09/01/2008 22:09

Yes, had sweeps - didn't start me off and hurt like hell.
Sorry ....

ingles2 · 09/01/2008 22:10

Had 2 sweeps, didn't work, didn't hurt...was induced both times at 42 weeks

LuckySalem · 09/01/2008 22:13

Oh this isn't good.

I'm 41 weeks tomorrow and MW is coming to do the sweep. I'm panicking at the prospect of a sweep as I'm convinced it's going to hurt like hell (is it like a smear test?)

Also panicking at the thought of being induced as have home water birth planned and my horror is an induction in hospital as I hate hospitals and REALLY don't want to be hooked to wires!

Surely it's worked for someone?

Had about three sweeps with DS. None worked and it was really really painful, although I don't believe that's the case for everyone. Sorry to be no help.

LynetteScavo · 09/01/2008 22:15

Had a sweep with DD. Didn't hurt at all at the time -aparently I was 4 cm dilated. I was sore afterwards though, a cross between felling bruisd and period pain. Baby arived 6 days later.

paulayatesbiggestfan · 09/01/2008 22:15

yes i did have two in one day
one did not hurt and got me 'rumbling' the second one 6 hours later did hurt and despite a patonising midwife telling me i was not in labour my labour was '0-60' in less than 10 minutes and baby born less than two hours later

LynetteScavo · 09/01/2008 22:17

It's not really like a smear test, as they don't stick any thing in you, apart from their hand, but there is a lot more "sweeping" going on, streatching the cervix.

lulumama · 09/01/2008 22:17

lucky... deep breaths whilst you are having it done, focus on breathing, don;t tense.. blow out through your lips , horsey lips , will help too

it might not work, it might ! lots of sex afterwards get that cervix ripe ......

Pickie · 09/01/2008 22:18

had 2 sweeps as well, unpleasant and uncomfortable. Didnt work, DD came when she was ready!.

TurkeyLurkey · 09/01/2008 22:18

2 sweeps with 2 pregnancies, both hurt and did bugger all to get things going. Wish they hadn't bothered.

elbarto · 09/01/2008 22:18

had to beg for sweep, was going loopy. had it, in labour two days later. didnt hurt as much as I thought, bit uncomfortable though. hurt more when I tensed up but lovely midwife got me to relaaaaaxx while she fiddled about down there and that made it easier.

very excited for you, hope all goes well and you soon meet your baby!

Maidamess · 09/01/2008 22:18

Had a sweep, bit prickly. That happened at lunchtime, my waters broke next morning, ds born 6 hours later.

Nappyzone · 09/01/2008 22:18

had one with 2nd baby on day +7, boy popped out quickly on day 10. At sweep was uncomfortable but not painful - kind of egged me on mentally as told membranes bulging and ready to go at any time. I know of friends who have popped hrs later but i kind of wonder if that just coincidence been as though at due date anyway iyswim. Good luck

foxythesnowman · 09/01/2008 22:19

With DC3 I had two, with DC4 I had 5 and was 13 days late.

At least when she did my last one she told me I was 6cm.

Good luck with yours, hope it works

Had two sweeps, and both worked. I don't really remember much about the first but with ds2, he was a week overdue, had a sweep 9am on the Thursday and he was born at midnight. The actual sweep was not the most pleasant thing but I didn't find it awful. Uncomfortable and a bit sore. Then mild pains throughout the day and then all happened very quick in the evening.

Good luck, it'll be fine

CarGirl · 09/01/2008 22:21

if you end up in hospital you do not have to be hooked up to machines etc jut say no/refuse whatever.

Elsy · 09/01/2008 22:23

I had sweep 4pm, contractions started at midnight, DD born by 6am next morning. Sweep itself was fine - bit uncomfortable but no pain afterwards (until the contractions...)

TodayToday · 09/01/2008 22:25

Mine worked but I was 41 + 3 when I had it. It did not hurt at all (for me) I was advised to wait 2 hours and then go for a long walk. DH and I did that and contractions started. I had the baby about 12 hours after the sweep.

BetsyBoop · 09/01/2008 22:36

two sweeps (one at 39+4, the other at 41wks) neither worked & both bloody hurt!

TheBlonde · 09/01/2008 22:40

had one with DS, hurt like hell, nothing like a smear more like a brutal jabbing of my very unready cervix
it did not start me off

would recommend sex instead every time, much more pleasant!

Naetha · 09/01/2008 23:36

I was already in early labour when I had a sweep, but it certainly got things going an awful lot faster. Was uncomfortable, but no worse than say a smear, or any kind of intrusive medical examination!
