Induction vs twice weekly monitoring.

Hi, I've had many episodes of reduced movement during my 3rd trimester. Scans and CTG's have came up fine, although baby does tend to keep me on the monitor for a long time due to her being asleep/inactive! But she does meet the criteria in the end.

I'm 37.5 weeks and the doctor said she would like to do the monitoring instead of induction due to the rate of failed inductions this early. Totally agree with her and would obviously like to keep baby in for as long as I can.

However, when do I call it a day and ask for further conversations about induction? I'm not great at advocating for myself and tend not to express my worries well! However, I don't know if I can go to 40 weeks with only have 2 ctg's a week and still experiencing reduced movement possibly! Like the monitoring it great, but you only know the baby is okay in that moment... I don't really want to sit there guessing about my baby's health...

When is the earliest they induce for this kind of thing? I was thinking of pushing for 39 weeks but don't want to if this is not commonly done! Help!!

Thanks!!

We're all behind you. Document everything lovely. Let us know how your scan goes. X

@mango1821…I really hope that today you are treated in a more empathetic and professional manner! At this stage you should not have to be under all this stress and doubt …feel so angry on your behalf!
Good luck lovely…hope you have someone with you to give you the mental energy to be assertive if necessary 💐💐

LazyYogi · 31/03/2022 19:31

I hope you managed to get someone more empathetic to handle your care, OP

Thedogscollar · 01/04/2022 02:07

@mango1821
Hi. How did you get on?

mango1821 · 01/04/2022 10:33

Hi everyone, just an update. Finally had a meeting with a really lovely consultant. She listened to me and all of my concerns, apologised so much for her colleague (although I've still continued with my complaint as I feel it's needed for positive change). Induction is scheduled and our little girl should be making her appearance very soon. Thank you for all the support on this thread as truthfully I wouldn't have gone back to the hospital if it wasn't for all of you! I'm so glad I did and I finally feel at ease to enjoy the last tiny stint of my pregnancy xx

That’s good to hear. I hope you have a positive induction and your little girl is here soon.

Pyri · 01/04/2022 10:39

Good luck OP! Hope it goes well.

I was induced and my advice would be to take the painkillers offered, the contractions can be quite strong and the epidural before going on the drip is often recommended.

feliznavidad2 · 01/04/2022 11:26

So glad to see your update @mango1821 - well done for being so strong throughout, and speaking up - you shouldn't have had to go through this, but hopefully your speaking out will help to benefit the care of other mums-to-be too xx

Clockstooforward · 01/04/2022 11:33

Oh @mango1821…absolutely brilliant. Please keep us updated when you have your little girlie in your arms .Am glad you are going ahead with your complaint.
Not long now 💐💐

StarsandStones · 01/04/2022 11:58

Good to hear!

Yes, as previous posters said: good chance it will be more intense than 'normal' labour. Stay strong and all the best for all of you! Flowers

afinethingindeed · 01/04/2022 13:54

I'm so glad to see your update.
I had a really positive induction last year. I have nothing to compare it to so can't say how much more intense it was but I just wanted to let you know that it is possible to still have a good experience (as lovely as it can be!). All the best :) x

SaraKitty · 01/04/2022 13:55

So happy you were finally listened to and yes you should continue with your complaint to help make sure it doesn’t happen to someone else . I also followed through with a complaint after my first birth experience and it made me feel a little better knowing that I gave my feedback . Best of luck for the induction process xx

Thedogscollar · 01/04/2022 15:20

@mango1821
Yay thank goodness for that.
I've been thinking of you. I'm so glad you managed to speak to a consultant who actually listened and discussed your worries with you.

Re induction yes it can take a while to get things going so to speak so take something to read, music and snacks in with you. Keep mobile go for walks inbetween observations use birthing ball stay active as this will a help get labour started.

Re oxytocin drip yes it does make contractions quite intense so consider epidural which if works is an amazing form of analgesia. They have their pros and cons like all drugs do but see how you go.

When you have time can you update on you and baby. I'd like to know you are both safe n sound.

Well done you in advocating for yourself and your baby. X

BobbinHood · 01/04/2022 19:22

Really pleased to read your update, I was appalled by how you’ve been treated, particularly the way the consultant had spoken to you. I’m another who had a really positive induction experience, at 38 weeks exactly.

DSGR · 01/04/2022 19:58

Good luck OP. I’ve been induced twice and really needed epidural to get through it (long, long labours). Don’t be afraid to discuss options. Glad you got there in the end

ricketybeauty · 04/04/2022 14:55

Great news, let us know once she'd here how you got on!

mango1821 · 13/04/2022 04:46

Hi everyone, sorry for the super late update! Baby girl arrived safe. Induction was fab, very quick and effective (pessary and ARM). Labour was relatively quick and painless (THANK GOD for the epidural, I have some ladies on here to thank for that).

She arrived a very healthy weight and we are doing amazing. Thank you everyone for the support and advice that led to both me and baby being safe xxx

I'm sure you've had more pressing matters than updating the thread!

Congratulations OP, it is wonderful to hear that all has gone well, enjoy the cuddles. 💐

Flittingaboutagain · 13/04/2022 13:46

I am disgusted that the week of the Ockenden report being published, you are being treated so poorly by staff at an NHS maternity unit.

^ reading your posts OP my heart was in my mouth dreading a bad outcome for you. I am so pleased for you baby girl is here and you're both well.

Flittingaboutagain · 13/04/2022 13:47

When you're up to it, if you can continue with your complaint please do. I would also email the CQC to tell them because this could have been a tragedy.

LazyYogi · 13/04/2022 16:12

Congratulations! I have been thinking about you and hoping for the best Smile

loopycurtains · 13/04/2022 23:41

Lovely news, I had been thinking of you. Congratulations!

feliznavidad2 · 14/04/2022 09:12

Fab news @mango1821 been keeping an eye out for your update xx

Doesthiscountasausername · 14/04/2022 09:21

@EmpressCixi

You say that during the scans “Scan and CTGs have come up fine” and “she meets the criteria in the end”. Do you mean criteria for not having reduced movement? (some reduced movement is normal as they run out of room in the 3rd trimester) so the question is did she meet criteria for actual reduced movement, or did she meet criteria for normal movement for 3rd trimester? It’s not very clear from your OP.
  • If she’s meeting criteria for normal movement, I agree with your doctor on the monitoring and I would re-address at 40 weeks and push to schedule an induction NLT 41 weeks.
  • if she’s meeting criteria for reduced movement, I would honestly push for monitoring every other day and have induction scheduled now for NLT 40 weeks. With the understanding that if any monitoring session showed a decline in movement, then an induction (or C-section) would be scheduled within 24hrs.

(I’m not a medical doctor, this is just advice from another mother).

Haven’t read the whole thread so apologies if this has been addressed. But the advice about reduced movements being normal in the third trimester is outdated, incorrect and potentially dangerous. Babies do not run out of room to move. The type of movements might change from a kicking, poking to more rolling but the amount of movements and the pattern of the awake/sleep cycles should stay the same.
